“Excellent dining at The Yard”
Reviewed 4 November 2011

The Yard restaurant at Sheffield's Mercure St Paul's Hotel is something of a hidden gem. There's a comfortable champagne bar (with good cocktail menu) where you can order a wide range of bar meals and sumptuous Sandwiches, and there's the main restaurant, offering a large menu of modern European flavours and select world wines to match.

We found the service excellent; friendly, helpful and accommodating. Even accompanying nibbles such as a selection of olives and roast almonds were generous in portion.

The cooking was absolutely excellent and it was also not a problem to make the odd substitution on the plate. Presentation was good, the taste and quality of produce better still - for very reasonable prices too.

I stayed here as part of a group of friends who had booked a weekend spa break.

Pros: good price, nice rooms and decent spa facilities, good location.

Cons: they messed up the room allocations, which caused problems when checking out.

Spa treatments were mixed up and cut short because they were running behind. They had clearly overbooked and could'nt with the volume. The spa was far too busy with the relaxation rooms full. They also allowed one group to bring in a new born baby, which I have never seen before. A crying baby doesn't aid relaxation!

Service in the bar was extremely slow.

When we checked out there was totalconfusion because they had messed up the room allocations. This lead to 3 of our groupbeing overcharged (although 3 days later they were still insisting we had underpaid). As a result it took us 45mins tocheck out, with a promise to call the next day to resolve the outstanding issues. They didn't call.

I wouldn't stay here again, which is a hame as the hotel itself is nice.

We had a wonderful stay last Friday at St Paul's. The staff gave us a warm welcome and were very helpful. Our Executive room was very spacious, spectacular views of the city with great facilities and lovely little extras. We enjoyed relaxing in the bar area. The hotel was in the most perfect location surrounded by the fountains, peace gardens and theatres. Park in the NCP and get an amazing discount at reception. If you want somewhere magical to eat try Mamas and Leonies pizza place a stones throw away from the hotel.... PERFECT STAY. Thankyou Accor Hotels in Sheffield x

I have been here several times now, all of which have been fantastic. I go with my mum and sister for a spa weekend and all 3 of us cant fault it.

The location is perfect, right in the city centre of Sheffield. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable, with good views of Sheffield. The food is outstanding, we have had our night time meal there a couple of times and had afternoon tea, both of which were delicious, the breakfast, well, you couldnt ask for more, it is an all you can eat buffet with cereals, meats, cheese, bread, fruits, yoghurts, pastries, cooked breakfast items ie, bacon, eggs, sausage, tomatoes etc, it really is the best breakfast i have had in a hotel.

The staff are very helpful and pleasent.

The Spa is set in a peaceful and relaxing environment with excellent treatments and free refreshments.

I would highly recommend this hotel if you are planning a trip to Sheffield or in need of a relaxing Spa weekend or treatment.

We have stopped in this hotel a couple of times when visiting my daughter who is at uni.It is a great location in the centre of the city. The staff are very friendly. spa facilities are good but were a little cold.Breakfast is a bit pricey so we went room only. The champagne bar is good and the bar staff are excellent.Parking is close by but is expensive.Overall it is a good hotel to stop at.

We had a room on the third floor which was extremely gloomy and had a large stain on the carpet. We couldn't open the curtains to let in light because we were right opposite a building where people were working so there was no privacy. The staff agreed to allow us to swap rooms after the first night to one on the fourth floor. This was better from a light point of view but the carpet was very poorly fitted and rucked up. Both rooms would not have been out of place in an old style Soviet apartment block. We refused the second room and were offered an upgrade to the fifth floor which was very much better, lighter and much more the standard you would expect from a 4* hotel. If we'd have been given that room initially we would have been very satisfied. The hotel generally has very pleasant public spaces and a very nice pool but at least some of the bedrooms are in serious need of an upgrade.

A lovely hotel. Very impressive as you walk in and the Winter Gardens beautifully compliment the hotel. Love the fact that after breakfast you can stroll from the restaurant area and through the glass doors into the serene environment of the gardens.
The front desk staff were very nice and sharply checked me in. My room was large and spacious. I like the fact that the mini-bar was not stocked and on request it could be. Had a lovely view of the fountains from my room. The swimming pool area is quite and nice. Really enjoyed relaxing down there. Overall had a lovely experience and would recommend this hotel to all. My first time in Sheffield and I think it is a great city. The hotel experience certainly matched it.
