“Fantastic overnight stay- friendly staff and amazing room- great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2012

Fantastic overnight stay- very friendly and helpful staff. Large Hotel room very chic and modern with everything you need. Amazingly comfortable bed. Room furthest away from lifts-(room 434) very quiet. Room looked over the Winter garden and the Crucible theatre, which was beautifully lit up at night. Sights and restaurants/bars all within easy reach- no need for taxis.

We booked through lastrooms just as room only but were able to upgrade for breakfast when we checked in (breakfast £10). Really impressed with breakfast selection and environment- good range of fresh continental pastries, cereals, dried fruits, and of course the Full English breakfast. Waiter service very slick and welcoming. Even better eating breakfast in the hotel with glass walls into Winter garden so you feel you could be in an exotic climate!!!! Chilled out comfortable bar area too.

Hotel doesn't have a car-park but not a problem at all- as Charles Street multi-storey car park (Q park) is just across courtyard (seconds walk!)- only downside is you have to pay (£12.40 for 24 hours), you get a 10% discount card from hotel staff for car park.

Spa only slightly disappointing - good size and clean swimming pool but would benefit from more space around poolside- only 4 loungers, and no-where to hang your towel or robe, therefore towel got wet. Relaxation room (comfy chairs and soft lighting) was sadly too small- only had space for 6 people, therefore I couldn't fit in when waiting for treatment. Free drinks in refreshment room but with bright lighting which was too bright when trying to chill- would benefit from comfy chairs in that room too. Facial treatment lovely, treatment room warm and staff welcoming. I feel you should be provided with a robe if you are a hotel guest but I was the only one who got provided with a robe as I was paying for a treatment, my husband did not. Our hotel rooms did not have robes either.

Overall- definitely would come back and stay here.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the lifts - recommend room 434 or 534 as they are the corner rooms (very bright...

Situated bang in the city centre sandwiched between the Town Hall and the Winter Garden, this is also the perfect location if you are visiting Sheffield Theatres. Rooms are good sized, with nice bathrooms featuring separate walk-in shower and bath.
Service was welcoming and efficient, with all the staff friendly.
Pleasant bar and modern bistro overlooking the Winter Garden provides adequate, but not exciting, dining. Unless included in the package, it's better value to get breakfast at the Café Rouge round the corner.
If arriving by car it's a good idea to park at the modern and clean "Q Park", which is then less than 100m walk across a pedestrian area to the hotel. Don't forget to present you car park card at reception to get a 10% discount on parking there.

We have stayed at this hotel several times, and each time we have found the service at reception friendly and efficient, and the rooms to be large and comfortable.
would recommend it highly as it is very central.

Room Tip: the corner rooms at the end of the corridors have panoramic windows, great views of the city.

Stayed at the Mecure for 1 night for my partner's graduation. We came by train so the lack of parking wasn't a problem and the hotel is a short walk from the train station. Upon arrival the hotel lobby looks lovely, very spacious and brightly coloured. Staff also looked smart and professional. We were pointed in the direction of the restaurant but the pool/spa area etc wasn't mentioned. After existing the lift to the 1st floor the hotel went downhill. The decor was dated and a nasty greeny-yellow swirly pattern. Dirty laundry etc piled all in the corridors - but we may have just arrived at change over time(?). The room itself was a decent size but again the decor was dated and the ceiling to floor windows overlooking offices and restaurants very close by may have been good in theory - but we could quite clearly see people looking into the room from their offices, and without any blinds we just had to close all the curtains in the room for a bit of privacy. The was no main light in the room, just several lamps dotted over the room which didn't give off that much light so the room was a bit grim. The bed was very worn (see photo) and ripped and top of the sheets were stained/dirty we later discovered.

We didn't have time to have a shower etc as we needed to head straight back out to the University and didn;t get back until after 12midnight. But in the morningwe also noticed the light in the shower didn't work, the shower itself was just the public swimming pool changing rooms and had several hairs dottd over the floor, the shower wasn't very powerful also. There was quite a novel button in the bathroom however you could turn up so you could hear the TV through a speaker in the ceiling. I went to dry my hair and found the hairdyer fitting (the end of it) was broken and didn't fit on the hairdryer - it also became apparent that there was no mirror to use other than on the wardrobe door at the other end of the room - and there were no plug sockets anywhere near this! Not very practicle.

We didn't have time to use the pool which was a shame so I can't comment on that, noe the bar/restauarnt as we ate out.

On checking out we did mention the issues when we were asked if we had had a good stay (not expecting any response really) and were just told if we had told them sooner they could have switched rooms, we told them obviously we didn't know the problems until the morning and that was the end of it.

So for a central location it is great, and for the pool too I imagine, but I wouldn't say it was an excellent standard of hotel room by any means. I'd prefer a Premier Inn.

I recently stayed at the Mercure St. Paul's. I was extremely pleased. the room was very nice, the service excellent and the pool the best I have ever seen in a hotel. it is adjacent to the Winter Garden, which makes the glass, open concept lobby and dining area that much more spectacular. We took a package which included breakfast and dinner and found it to be very good value. Our room was in very good condition and the bathroom in particular was sparkling clean.

Stayed here overnight for work, great room - spacious, comfy bed & awesome view down into the Winter Gardens (a giant indoor tropical greenhouse).
Indoor pool was good & steam room/ aroma igloo etc.
Restaurant ok- nothing special but perfectly ok & there was a Jan deal where you get a free glass of wine with 2courses.

I was going to the Crucible Theatre - and you can't get much closer than this.
It's also a short walk from the train station.
There are lots of places to eat nearby too.
The hotel is typical of a city centre 4 star chain hotel.
Nice reception/bar/restaurant area on the ground floor.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable.
Nice bathroom - with bath and separate shower.
The mattress was perhaps a little firm for me - but that's a matter of preference.
So all in all it was a great stay - the big plus being proximity to the event I was attending.
