“What's the catch?”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

We paid £55 per night for a double room for four nights. That has to be exceedingly good value: a recently-converted 19thC school, bang in the city centre, excellent continental breakfast (with plenty of fresh fruit) and the cooked kind for an extra £5, small but comfortable room (though a bit short of drawer and shelf space), friendly staff, engaging photos of the old school on the walls. No parking on site but discounted space in a modern carpark a couple of streets away. The catch is that Leopold Square (the old school yard out the back) is full of bars, the hub and apogee of Sheffield's "night time economy". So if you have a room at the back (we did) it's noisy. Very. Until late. But you can always pack your ear-plugs. Otherwise, thoroughly recommended.

The Leopold Hotel is really in the "Heart of the City". Great location. Out the front door, you are spoilt with which way to walk!! Staff were very professional, The room, we had a Kingsize Room, was large and very comfortable, and looked over Leopold Square. Great breakfast.

Room Tip: We had 148, overlooking Leopold Square.

This was a real gem. Sheffield is my home city and back with my partner for a family get together this was a great find. It's very central, perfect for the city centre and the bright lights. It was a school originally and they have made a very good job of retaining at least some of the architecture of the past. Indeed my father studied here in the 1930's.

The hotel is quite quirky. We were upgraded to a suite which featured an upstairs mezzanine bedroom, not perhaps for the faint hearted or after a few shandies as the spiral staircase is quite steep, but we liked it. The hotel was surprisingly quiet, although our bedroom looked over the front rather than the Leopold Square side which helped.

The staff are very helpful, parking isn't easy in most city centre locations but directions to a secure parking zone were good and it was relatively cheap. We didn't eat there so I have no idea of the quality of the food but a large party was in full swing upon our arrival which probably gives a good impression.

My only complaint was the double internet booking. I'd paid twice for the room. Easily sorted however with one swift phone call and an immediate refund.

All in all a great little find and we'll definitely be going back.

We stayed at the Leopold for two nights as we were attending a wedding at the Crucible Theatre.
I booked about 2 months prior to our visit and was offered a loyalty membership (free of charge) which entitled us to early check in, free mineral water and chocolate on arrival. I rang Reception whilst on our way (about 9.30am)to see if we could indeed check in early and the receptionist was very helpful and said our room would be available within half an hour and we could check in any time after 10.00am. She told us to park outside in the lay-by and we could unload our baggage and then go to the car park. We stopped over at Meadowhall and so did not reach the hotel until approximately 2.00pm and indeed parked outside and unloaded our baggage, the car park is quite a long walk from the hotel and not convenient at all, but the hotel is an old school and right in in the middle of the city so you cannot expect them to have parking on site. Our room was very clean and spacious and we did indeed have complimentary mineral water and two Chunky Kit-kats! The bed was comfortable and there was no noise from the downstairs restaurants in the square. Continental breakfast was included and this was more than ample although I noticed most people order the full English. My only complaint of the room was that there is no full length mirror at all and getting dressed for a wedding it would have been nice to have a full length mirror. I was not impressed with the Reception staff as they did not seem bothered that after they ordered our taxi somebody else had taken it. She seemed to disbelieve me and walked outside to see - maybe I was stressed and a little grumpy but felt she really was not bothered.

A very nice hotel, staff were pleasant, service was very good, the room was comfortable. Located near the centre of town with plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from. The hotel is not to far from railway station and has easy access for cars. A good choice if your going to sheffield.

With a daughter studying at the university, we have stayed in the Leopold on several previous occasions and it really is our favourite hotel in Sheffield. During graduation week we decided to stay for five nights to properly explore the area and treated ourselves to a mezzanine suite. This was lovely, on two levels and very airy and spacious. The staff as always were extremely pleasant and helpful, especially Graciela and Gareth. The hotel is very conveniently located right in the middle of Sheffield and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. We also used it as a base this time to visit Chatsworth and Matlock Bath. We had some great meals out, including the Milestone, Graze Inn and the Wig and Pen - all of which are worth a visit and Leopold Square, where the hotel is located is a lovely place to sit and have a drink or lunch. Sheffield is a great city for a break with lots to do and see. The Botanical Gardens and the Sharrowvale Road area are well worth visiting.
