“Peaceful, convenient and kind staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

I took a party of 10, including 3 colleagues from China, to stay at the Valley Hotel to visit the Ironbridge museums. The location is very convenient, the staff are delightful, and the stay was very peaceful. The surprise was the restaurant - Chez Maw - that served a remarkable dinner on the night of our arrival. Really very good food and excellent service. The hotel has a lot of rooms, so breakfast can be a bit of a scrum, some of the service (afternoon tea) is a bit canteen-like, and the rooms are ok-ish, but these comments miss the point of the hotel. The building has a great location, borders wonderful gardens, is near the Severn, is walking distance from the Ironbridge, has encaustic tiles dating back to the 1700's decorating the stairs and is staffed generally by very kind, well meaning folks. All in all, a good stay.

One comment, we left on Saturday morning, and enjoyed peace and quiet drying our stay. It is probably worth checking to ensure there isn't a wedding when you plan to visit, two parties arrived on the Friday / Saturday we were there - I expect Saturday will be noisy!

Dear Previous Guest,

We are very pleased to learn of your group of colleagues recently enjoying our Hotel, award winning Restaurant and stunning location here in Ironbridge. We are lucky to be situated so closely to all the local attractions, yet still enjoy our own piece of tranquilly on the edge of Ironbridge; no doubt you enjoyed the lovely views from our Terrace out over the Gorge. Thank you for your compliments of the staff. We hope to welcome you all back soon to enjoy some more our wonderful World Heritage Site.

This looked like the perfect hotel for a relaxing stay with all the good reviews BUT after staying here last Saturday I'd say otherwise!
On arrival we got allocated room 28, it was suppose to be a family room but was very much on the small side!
We left our room at 830 to find outside our room was being used for a wedding buffet a table of cutlery one side of the door and hog roast opposite and buffet so getting out of our room was a struggle with a pram around the wedding guests!
We had a table booked in the hotel resturant for 830 but didnt even get seated till 930, also there was alot of flies in the resturant that kept landing on plates and people, the one possitive about the stay is that the restaurant staff were helpful and food was delicious!
Another issue is on the whole of the hotel premises theres only one designated smoking area by reception so you had to pile yourself in with the loud drunken wedding party!
From 12 threw to the early hours we had our son woken up many times by the function next door and drunken guests.
In future I hope for any familys that stay here you be more considerate to their needs and place them elsewhere in your hotel not basically in the middle of a party and try to find a 2nd designated smoking area away from the function room as some people try to go away for a relaxing break.

We stayed at this hotel recently on a group walking hotel and could not fault any aspect of the hotel and services. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel itself is set in beautiful grounds with a short walk along the river bank to the Iron bridge village.

The hotel rooms although small were very clean and comfortable with all facilities such as TV , tea and coffee making facilities and ensuite bathroom.

Despite being a large group of thirty people the hotel catered excellently with our meal requirements. The breakfast was very substantial with a variety of options. The Evening meal was outstanding with once again a variety of options and very well presented.

Would I visit this hotel again ? yes , most definitely and a big thank you to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable .

Room Tip: Some of the rooms in the new part of the building did not have outside windows, only windows opening...

Defiantly will stay at this lovely hotel again. Staff are all lovely and are more than happy to help. From the minute we walked through the door we knew our stay was going to be perfect! Plenty of parking within the hotel grounds.

Wow this is a good place for a number of reasons. Superb staff (thanks to Lynne -the ultimate friendly host/receptionist), superb room, lovely outdoor area to sit and watch the world go by next to stunning scenery .. need I go on.

Only disappointment? We were there for one night ... you could spend three easily here with all the museums, pubs etc to visit!

Wonderful .. thanks to everyone for making our celebration stay so special.

Room Tip: Won't give it away I'm afraid!

The Valley Hotel complex comprises an old house in a lovely position with fabulous views over the Ironbridge gorge, together with a more modern extension in which roofed-over passageways between former outbuildings create a couple of indoor 'streets'.

The house is a warren of stairs and passageways with many original and attractive design features including some superb tiling in the main staircase hall.

As is inevitable with an old building of this type, converted into an hotel, there are numerous awkward and obtrusive fire doors to negotiate which made it a bit of a trial carrying bags up to the second floor.

The Chez Maw restaurant was the highlight of our stay - good value (including the wine list), excellent dinner choices with specials which changed each day, great presentation and smiling staff who combined informal friendliness with efficiency.

Boring desserts can often let down an otherwise great meal but I have to say the desserts in the Chez Maw were some of the best I've enjoyed anywhere. Breakfasts were also well presented, with choices such as porridge and kippers freshly prepared to order in the kitchen.

The bar terrace overlooking the gardens and the gorge is a great spot to sit and enjoy a drink away from the bustle of the town on an August weekend.

The rooms are more hit and miss. Our bedroom (12) was dated (Artex ceilings, anyone?) and badly cramped, with ill-chosen bulky furniture making it nearly impossible to squeeze past the foot of the bed - a total contrast with the spacious, modern and airy bathroom attached.

Don't get me wrong - I much prefer an hotel with character to a pigeon-hole room in a soulless chain, but the Valley could do with a bit of a refresh and some attention to detail to bring the guest rooms (at least the two we saw) up to the excellent standards evident in the restaurant and public areas.

We enjoyed our stay and would hope to visit again within the coming year, not least to use the valuable facility on Ironbridge museum passports to make free repeat visits within a 12 month period. There's so much to see a single weekend isn't nearly enough time.
