“Very dissappointed!”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

We were looking forward to our visit. It was over priced but offered little to visitors. It is not as what it describes. There were a few Victorian characters in costume going about, nothing could compare to the Ballarat in Australia. According to the site map, there are over 50 shops, cottages and places of work, but many were not opened. It was boring and we lost interest at the end.

“Absolutely brilliant!”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

Oh I loved this - from the minute we changed modern currency into coins of the period minted specially for Blists Hill, to the moment we exchanged what was left back to the modern type, I was completely hooked! From vintage items donated when old shops closed, to brilliant facsimiles, to whole buildings dismantled and rebuilt in situ, to the amazing volunteer actors and actresses, and the amazing ambience of the village, I wanted to move in! The shops display prices in vintage and modern money for the items on sale. Try the chips, the bakery, the sweet shop, and the Victorian fairground. The Chemist's shop is the site used for filming 'The Victorian Pharmacy'. Don't forget to join in the sing song in the pub. Oh and watch the workers in the foundry, the Candle Makers, and the working replica of Telford's prototype steam engine, built for Blists Hill from the original plans by an modern day engineering firm!

“Wonderful Step Back in Time”
Reviewed 29 August 2014 via mobile

This is a fantastic outdoor living museum.

You come out of the modern reception area and step back in time immediately. Your first stop should be the bank to unburden yourself of that modern money for old money - although you can spend modern money in the shops, dealing in the old money adds to the charm.

The children were entertained all day. There are many parts to this museum and many 'hands-on' activities that the children can get involved in.

Would definitely go back and recommend.

“Enchanting”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

Brilliantly entertaining and educational. Lots of exhibits to see, with the "shopkeepers" and "workers" explaining their jobs as you go around. The grounds are massive, so expect a lot of walking. One of those rare places that you can actually go to when it is raining as many of the exhibits are indoors. There is plenty of car parking, with overflow car parks operating in busy periods. Can easily spend a good 4 hours here.
Only thing I didn't like was that when you enter, you walk straight into the first exhibit which is a dark room with screens all around showing film of a working blast furnace, complete with volume at full blast. It was very unnerving as it was totally unexpected and my dog was petrified, so we had to leave quickly.
On the plus side, they do let you take our dog in (not allowed into the exhibits, but it is easy to take turns waiting outside with the dog. Better that than having to leave it at home or in kennels). They also do 50% discount off the price for carers, brilliant for me as carers allowance of £59 a week doesn't go very far.

“A fun day”
Reviewed 28 August 2014 via mobile

A fun day out. The staff are mainly very friendly and helpful. The candle dipping is fun for kids of all ages. Chips are really tasty, there's a pub, little shops to buy old fashioned items (plasterer and ironmongery items quite cheap really).
I think £16 an adult is quite steep, so best to get an annual pass x
