“Sunday dinner, not!”
Review of The Blue Boar

The Blue Boar
Ranked #24 of 92 Restaurants in Ludlow
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$7 - US$14
Cuisines: British, Brew Pub
Description: We offer a light local and homemade menu in an informal pub surrounding or courtyard garden. We aim to utilise the great local to Ludlow market and ethos to bring venison pies made in our kitchen to local desserts from the market. The menu changes frequently to reflect availability and seasons. So if a light local lunch full of Shropshire flavour is what you seek then we hope we can accommodate.

Called in for Sunday dinner on Easter Sunday. The Sunday roast menu was off, apparently due to a supply shortage. However, we ate a perfectly adequate lunch off the specials menu.

Oh dear, what a shame that this place has gone so far downhill. I used to visit the Blue Boar for meals when visiting relatives in the area and was it was always okay, so I thought nothing of popping in for a bite to eat with some friends and family members after a visit to the castle. The menu looked okay, proper pub grub and with two meals for £12, not bad value.

How wrong I was... The first problem was that the table was unbelievably sticky, to the degree that the table mats were difficult to move around as they were stuck fast. We ordered some food which arrived after about 20 minutes. The first two meals were okay, but we had to send back the next two plates of ham and eggs as you could see that the egg was not cooked through and the egg white was still liquid. Then my friend cut into her burger, only to discover that it was semi raw inside. She complained and got her money back as she had been completely put off the food and it was only at this point that the table next to us said that they had the same problem with their burgers.

All in all, I don't think we'll be returning any time soon, unless the place has a deep clean and the chef learns to cook food properly!

We were on a coach tour through England,Scotland Ireland and Wales, when we stopped in Ludlow. After a look through the castle shop and a stroll down to the river we went for lunch at the Blue Boar with another elderly couple from the coach. Our lunch was excellent, we ordered fish and chips and were asked if we wanted mushy peas but declined. It was served very promptly and was hot, all our meals and drinks were perfect, it made another stop for lunch very pleasant.

Al had the faggots and I had chilli, at two meals for £10 we were not expecting much. The meals were VERY tasty and substantial, so much so that we called in and ate there again a couple of days later when we were back in Ludow. The staff were lovely and the chef was only too happy to tell us where he sauced his ingredients.
Good job we visited before we saw other reviews.
