“surprisingly poor in nearly every respect”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

Me and my husband visited in January for his birthday as he had expressed a desire to visit every time we drove past this beautifully situated and externally very impressive looking pub.

Well, it just goes to show how you shouldn't be taken in by external appearances!

The problems we experienced included;
1, Nobody to greet us upon arrival in the restaurant - left standing around waiting for somebody to appear for well over a minute.
2, Exceptionally poor, almost inedible Garlic Mushroom starter.
3, Nonappearance of promised bread fingers with starter - replaced with burnt (on one side) and raw (on the other) piece of garlic bread -left as totally inedible.
4, Not one working (or matching) salt cellar in the entire place. Having tried every table, one actually fell to pieces in my hands when picking it up throwing salt all over the table!
5, A main course of Salmon with new potatoes arrived with no potatoes. Having spoken to the chef, the waiter advised that the restaurant had "run out" of potatoes. Nobody had thought to mention this either when ordering or when the food arrived however. This in a town where Tesco shuts at midnight!
6, The Restaurant was lit inappropriately brightly even though approximately 20% of the numerous light bulbs were out of order. The furnishings also appeared to indicate either a serious lack of good taste, money, or possibly both.

In fairness I have to say that the staff we dealt with were all pleasant, smiling and superficially concerned at least that our evening was less than perfect. Nevertheless, other than the kind offer of a small reduction on our bill to compensate for the lack of potatoes, none of our concerns appeared to be seriously addressed.

This restaurant is an enigma. It potentially has so much going for it. It clearly had a lot of money spent on it a few years ago, and yet the ambience, decor, quality of food and overall level of management appears to resemble a 1970s Bulgarian ski resort. Avoid.
