“Great stay but take a vest in winter!”
Reviewed 18 February 2011

We arrived in pouring rain but were made very welcome by Caroline. The hotel is a former Edwardian house set in parkland (with sheep and lambs). The public rooms are very comfortable and most of the original features (fireplaces and oak panelling) remain in place. The bedroom was on the small side but had more the adequate storage. We had an en-suite shower room and that looked as if it had been fitted fairly recently (although I didn't like the control for the shower valve).
Dinner both nights was excellent. The hotel is owned and managed by a French chef and the kitchen turns out very good food. Breakfast was also very good.
The staff are attentive and genuinely helpful.
A recent addition to the hotel is a swimming pool and spa: most welcome over travelling by car. My only criticism is that away from the roaring log fire, the dining room can feel a little chilly in February.
Ludlow Town is about a mile or so away and there are National Trust properties in the vicinity.
Much more a hotel for adult guests than those with young families.
I would definitely recommend a stay here.

We arrived at the hotel right at the end of a special offer on the accomodation and restaurant. It turned out that we were the only guests in the hotel and restaurant. Notwithstanding the unusual circumstances we were made to feel that we were special, but without going overboard and making us feel ill at ease. Caroline gretted us and went out of her way to make our stay all that we had hoped when we booked the visit.

It had been a while since I have stayed in a hotel that I have been reluctant to leave. For me it had all the hallmarks for a good experience. The staff were really friendly, helpful and competent. The food was excellent, in quality and well presented by a chef who clearly subscribes to the concept that we depend on our sight as much as our taste when we eat. The wine list is extensive and suits all tastes. There is a bias towards quality French wines many with good bottle age. At the higher end these are very pricy but excellent. The room was comfortable with full facilities including good wifi Internet access and plug sockets located in sensible places for computer connection and phone recharging. The bathroom was equipped with all the usual requirements including a face towel sometimes omitted even by good hotels. I find myself reluctant to leave and will be very happy to return at some point in the future.

Came here to celebrate my partner's 40th birthday. We stayed in the four poster room which we had at a discounted rate for the Saturday and 50 per cent discount Sunday provided we dine at the hotel on the Sunday evening. The hotel is in a stunning location with wonderful countryside views, just 5 or 10 minutes by car from the centre of Ludlow. We actually travelled by train and found it easy to get a taxi when ever we needed one and we also enjoyed the walk into Ludlow. (It's worth remembering though that if you require a taxi on a Saturday between 11 and 12, you should pre book.). From the moment we arrived the staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was comfortable and clean with fluffy White towels and dressing gowns. The bath was quite small but there is also a power shower above the bath. As it was January it was quite cold even with the radiators on at times; however electric heaters were thoughtfully provided which warmed up the room in no time. Breakfast was a feast with plenty of choice, including cereals, yoghurt, croissants, fresh fruit, smoked fish, porridge and of course full Shropshire fried breakfast. The breakfast dining room is a nice bright airy room overlooking the front of the hotel with country views. The evening dining room is separate with the tables placed further apart. It was quiet when we stayed with only ourselves and one other diner, however there was music in the background and there certainly wasn't a lack of atmosphere. Equally the bar area and lounge with the log fires were extremely welcoming. The food was delightful, nicely presented and flavoursome. We also enjoyed the swimming pool and sauna which we were lucky enough to have to ourselves. We both had a treatment in the spa which I felt from similar experiences elsewhere were a little over priced for what they were. However it was nice to have that facility to add to our relaxing experience. The only thing I could comment negatively on is that when we arrived, we were hungry but were told that the chef wasn't working so there were no sandwiches available. I asked if I could have crisps instead but was told she couldn't find any. However that is a very minor flaw. All in all the staff couldn't do enough to make us more comfortable and welcome - and I would love to return. An ideal wedding venue too.

Lovely building and grounds. Friendly staff and owner. The food was very, very good but I did have a few niggles. We stayed two nights and the service on the second night was not as good as the first - they forgot our dessert and coffee and it really wasn't that busy.
Our room was comfy but a bit on the small side. It's a lovely place but somehow missing a bit of buzz .. particularly at dinner and breakfast - there's no background music (which I know can be annoying but it does stop people from worrying about being overheard - the more quiet a place is, the less people talk) and with tables very close to each other it seemed that people talked very quietly or not much at all. The breakfast room is a bit cramped and although the dining room was a good size the tables did seem to be a little too close together. It's also an odd mix of styles - parts of the hotel are clearly 'vintage' 80's eg the ladies loos, bar and bar stools - the loos look neglected and a bit of a dumping ground - maybe this is temporary but if I was looking to hold an event/wedding here then the loos would def put me off. I'd recommend this hotel based on the food - we didn't try the spa - but not on the overall ambience. The hotel also has no wi-fi or Internet - they seem to think that this is not necessary, saying that people come there to relax not to work. Wi-fi should be standard - at least in the bar/reception area - whether people want to work or not. Esp in a place like this where mobile phone reception is poor.

My husband and I stayed inbetween Christmas and new Year. Upon arrival we were told that we had been upgraded to one of the hotels superior rooms. The service throughout our stay was friendly and professional. We ate in the hotel on the second nigt and the food was amazing, fantastic choice and a great wine list. A truely lovely experience, thank you!
