“Where do I start”
Reviewed 5 August 2012

Our first night in Ludlow, the worst meal we have ever had and the longest we have ever had to wait for a meal.

I must write that the gentleman serving was very very polite and did supply us with free drinks during our 2 hour wait for our meal.

So much was wrong with our night, so in sum..

2 hour wait for food.
Vege Lasagne- possibly a micro meal, very very small.
Pizza- cheese disgusting
Pizza bases- we were given the wrong bases
Garlic bread- forgot to cook, brought out after our meal, was not home made.

On the plus side, when we complained the manager was very generous with discount, and explained they were short staffed, had used real mozarella instead of the grated (!) Dough rose too quickly ( oddly my friends had the right topping on the wrong bases!)

Keep your eyes closed on the way to the toilet- the fresh tomatos are stored just outside the ladies!

“Disappointing Experience”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

The service was extremely slow - 20 minutes before being given the menu (and then we had to ask for it) and 65 minutes for the starters to arrive.

The pizza and garlic bread were both very salty and were inedible.

And to cap off the evening this Italian restaurant ran out of Peroni Beer!

“Identity crisis”
Reviewed 25 May 2012

Is it a cafe? Is it a restaurant? Is it table service? Self service? Tearoom? Bistro?

At first look, Baker's has the appearance of a tea room/ coffee shop. It houses a collection of cups and saucers and teapots that underlines the concept of a tearoom or cafe. The presence of a teapot stand on each table added to the tearoom style. We liked these as they showed scenes of Ludlow, but what let them down was the curled up corners where the laminate was coming away. On the walls were food quotes from a variety of famous people from Hippocrates to Miss Piggy. The décor was topped off with a huge palm plant bedecked with red heart fairy lights more suited for a chinese takeaway. The tables and chairs were bistro style. What an eclectic mix!

There is an extensive menu, but apart from the fact that this place is licenced, there was nothing that lived up to the name of 'restaurant'. The menu ranges from egg on toast to moussaka (and chips!) It also sells cakes and sandwiches (and Tubby Custard??) Two of our choices were unfortunately not available.

The cafe/restaurant was manned by two gigglers who openly chatted to each other during service and one even sat down at a customer table and continued to shout across to the other one. They were then joined by the cook, and finally a gentleman who appeared to be the owner ( can't be sure). The same man had previously been taking photographs of customers. He had called out, 'does anyone have a problem with a flash? ( But not- 'does anyone mind having their photograph taken?')

The route to the toilet was lined with a variety of bits and pieces- out of use equipment and packs of fizzy drinks etc. The toilet cubicle itself was 'enhanced' by having a glass shelving unit opposite the loo displaying a couple of china bowls!

On the whole, a place that seems to have all the right elements of a successful business, but no clear identity. It needs a good tidy up and a rethink.

Having said that, though, I have to say that although the staff seemed oblivious to the needs of their customers much of the time, they were a happy bunch who were getting many compliments about the food from their customers.

All the ingredients of success are there...it just needs more clear definition of an identity and purpose, and the staff need to appreciate that their customers are more important than their socialising.
