Description: La Bécasse offers award-winning fine dining in the picturesque town of Ludlow. The stunning oak-panelled restaurant and state-of-the art kitchens behind the scenes under the guidance of Head Chef Will Holland, attracted attention from the moment it opened as the sister restaurant to Berkshire restaurant L’ortolan, where chef patron Alan Murchison has held his Michelin star since 2003.Building on his life-long passion for cooking and the finest seasonal, ingredients, Chef Will Holland and his brigade work closely with local suppliers and producers, and wherever possible use produce that is ‘Local to Ludlow’.Since opening the doors in July 2007, the team at La Bécasse has been earning awards and accolades. A prestigious Michelin Star was awarded in January 2009; before that La Bécasse became Ludlow’s only restaurant with three AA Rosettes, was included in Harden’s Restaurant Guide as well as The Good Food Guide published by Which?, and was voted "Best Fine Dining Restaurant" in the West Midlands by Metro within four months of launching.“Fine dining should not be exclusive, pretentious or an intimidating experience,” says Chef Will Holland. "At La Bécasse we aim to provide great food, knowledgeable and professional service, and memorable experiences for all our guests. Winning a Michelin star within 18 months of opening is an acknowledgement of the huge effort that every member of the team has put in since we started.”

“A VERY WELCOME GIFT”
Reviewed 21 March 2013

We has lunch at La Becasse as a gift from a friend who is a chef. We have been before on a few occassions and the last time were a bit dissapointed especially with the food and was therefore not surprised that they had lost their Michelin Star. If the Michelin inspectors had been there the day we had lunch they would certantly get that star back.
As it was snowing the day we went it was nice to be met with towels to dry off. Sevice was attentive and informative without being obtrucive. Food was excellent obviously first class ingredients cooked in a way that enhanses its natural flavour.
Pleased to say I would now reccommend it.

“Delightful”

Formal French style restaurant, but with informal ambience once you get going. Excellent food and superb service. Really worth a visit.

“Mothers' Day Treat”
Reviewed 16 March 2013

I took my wife to La Becasse for a Mothers' Day treat. A long drive from Warwickshire although on pleasant country roads. We had planned to look around Ludlow prior to lunch but it was so cold that we turned up at the restaurant 30 minutes early - no problem and we were met with a very friendly welcome from Gareth, who was up from sister restaurant L'Ortolan to help out.

After a complimentary Kir Royal for the good lady and nibbles we were shown to our table. The dining room is in several sections and is nicely presented. Tables are a decent size and well spaced unlike so many restaurants these days. There was a function on in the adjacent No1 Cellar, but this did not detract in any way from the service or ambience.

After some nice pre-starter bits and pieces my wife had duck egg Benedict as starter - really tasty although almost of main course size. My fish was beautifully cooked and more modest in size. Main courses of pork and confit duck leg were outstanding and both courses were complemented by a decent selection of wines by the glass - Pouilly Fume and Grenache/Syrah for us. All finished off with a pre-desert followed by a deconstructed trifle for her and an excellent cheese board for him.

Coffee and truffles left us content, very full and ready to tackle the bitter cold once again as we headed back to the car. Not a cheap meal at £112 including 12.5% "optional" service charge, but head and shoulders above the less expensive fare at our local gastropubs. Like another commentator, I'm not at all clear why this restaurant has lost its Michelin star - I have had inferior meals in starred restaurants many times.

“Excellent from start to finish”
Reviewed 15 March 2013

We booked as a birthday treat..I'm already looking forward to my next birthday to do it again, but the price was very acceptable so I might not wait that long. The setting is great, service perfect and food out of this world.

“A good restaurant, slightly overexpensive”
Reviewed 12 March 2013

La Becasse is a top-end restaurant in Corve Street in Ludlow (not sure what "fine dining" means any more - a transcendental experience over and above beyond great food, service and ambiance? One of the best meals I ever had was sharing a leg of lamb, hacked off a pile of lamb carcasses piled up on a none too clean loading bay, thrown over an enormous barbecue pit in a lorry park in Pakistan, served with bowls of cold yoghurt, and eaten with our hands at wooden benches, in the dark).

Parking is not too bad, but if you wanted to leave your car overnight and use taxis, La Becasse has a limited number of private car parking spaces available. Check beforehand. Speaking of taxis, it can be long wait between drinks trying to book one in Ludlow.

La Becasse is not cheap. If you go down the tasting menu route, with a accompanying wines the price is quite high, and I am not sure the restaurant quite lives up to that. Not a great fan of tasting menus. The service and friendly, not at all stuffy. The staff seemed to have a few new members, who were learning the ropes, but that in no way detracted from the evening - everything was very natural and helpful. Ambiance was warm, many interconnected rooms, tables well set apart

We ordered a l carte and the dishes were well presented and cooked. The flavouring was excellen in the fish and meat dishes we had. Caramel souffle afterwards was beautifully presented, tho' a tad too sweet for our taste. There were a multiplicity of little tasters/amuse-bouche, which I found a bit distracting.

All in all an excellent evening. I think it was worth it, whilst slightly expensive.

Recommended.
