“Wonderful Evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2013

I've had my sights set on La Becasse since reading the February issue of Conde Nast Traveler and reading about Ludlow's gastronomical epicenter. It was at the top of my list of places to visit when travelling to England for the month of March.

From the moment you walk in, you are in expert hands. Guided upstairs to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and appetizer, you are handed a menu and asked to choose between the à la carte or the tasting menu. My partner and I choose the tasting menu with wines and could not have been happier.

Each course was better than the last and was perfectly paired with a wine to match the tasty morsels on our dishes. The Sommelier, Kader Seddik really elevated our experience with his charming and unpretentious manner. He knows his wine and was very kind in explaining the different and sometimes subtle qualities of each glass that arrived.

From the amuse-bouche straight through dessert, each plate was a work of art and a delightful treat. Our courses for the evening included Foie Gras, Devon crab and a Fish Cake, Halibut with Vanilla Foam and Roasted Corn, Venison with Parsnip and a Blackberry, Chocolate Mole. Cheese and a White chocolate Cheesecake with Soaked Figs. Everything was designed to perfection and Chef Will Holland's creativity was evident in each dish.

The staff was wonderful and while it seemed a bit formal on the surface, it was actually a very relaxed atmosphere.

The decor leaned a bit to the old world style and the dining rooms are spacious with the tables not too close together. The modern plates suited the food but the one decor disaster was a pink glass candle holder on each table that looked like a floating flower from your grandmothers attic. (No offense to grandmothers). It looked completely out of place. I would suggest something simpler and less of an eyesore for such a lovely space.

If the decor didn't live up to the restaurant's hype, the food more than made up for it. We had a most enjoyable evening and plan to return on my next trip to England this July. I am already looking forward!

Went recently for a special occasion. Was a bit worried when I booked as the prices seemed very high, but it's worth it. Friendly service and fabulous good, a lovely treat for every now and again!!

“Good if its your kind of thing!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2013

It does what it does very well....but we didn't enjoy it very much.

The atmosphere is very formal..the staff were quite friendly but very formal. A bit obsequious to be honest. The food was good if you like very formal, and "fine dining". Actually my starter which was a pâté, was so rich that I really couldn't manage more than a mouthful, and that isn't usual for me!

Wine is expensive..very cheapest bottle at £31 but other than that £40 and up up up.

All in all, a VERY expensive evening, and I think it made us realise that though we LOVE good food and dining out, La Becasse and similar are not our bag!

“Good Food But Slow Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2013

We had the tasting menu with accompanying wines. The food was very good, but the long wait between courses ruined the flow of the evening. The staff were well trained, but disorganised and there did not seem to be a maitre’d present. This was a disappointing distraction and our experience suffered as a result.

“A delightful insight, lunch with a talented chef”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2013

We enjoyed a Surprise tasting lunch at the Vaults, Will Holland's new dining area at La Becasse. We found that Will himself was not only preparing but serving us our lunch. He proved a charming and informative host. The food was beautiful, delicious and interesting. We also enjoyed the paired wines which proved an excellent match. La Becasse made us very welcome, helping us celebrate our wedding anniversary in style. We recommend visiting The Vaults, a great opportunity to meet Will, enjoy a wonderful meal and learn about his style of haute cuisine.
