I've had my sights set on La Becasse since reading the February issue of Conde Nast Traveler and reading about Ludlow's gastronomical epicenter. It was at the top of my list of places to visit when travelling to England for the month of March.
From the moment you walk in, you are in expert hands. Guided upstairs to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and appetizer, you are handed a menu and asked to choose between the à la carte or the tasting menu. My partner and I choose the tasting menu with wines and could not have been happier.
Each course was better than the last and was perfectly paired with a wine to match the tasty morsels on our dishes. The Sommelier, Kader Seddik really elevated our experience with his charming and unpretentious manner. He knows his wine and was very kind in explaining the different and sometimes subtle qualities of each glass that arrived.
From the amuse-bouche straight through dessert, each plate was a work of art and a delightful treat. Our courses for the evening included Foie Gras, Devon crab and a Fish Cake, Halibut with Vanilla Foam and Roasted Corn, Venison with Parsnip and a Blackberry, Chocolate Mole. Cheese and a White chocolate Cheesecake with Soaked Figs. Everything was designed to perfection and Chef Will Holland's creativity was evident in each dish.
The staff was wonderful and while it seemed a bit formal on the surface, it was actually a very relaxed atmosphere.
The decor leaned a bit to the old world style and the dining rooms are spacious with the tables not too close together. The modern plates suited the food but the one decor disaster was a pink glass candle holder on each table that looked like a floating flower from your grandmothers attic. (No offense to grandmothers). It looked completely out of place. I would suggest something simpler and less of an eyesore for such a lovely space.
If the decor didn't live up to the restaurant's hype, the food more than made up for it. We had a most enjoyable evening and plan to return on my next trip to England this July. I am already looking forward!
