Description: La Bécasse offers award-winning fine dining in the picturesque town of Ludlow. The stunning oak-panelled restaurant and state-of-the art kitchens behind the scenes under the guidance of Head Chef Will Holland, attracted attention from the moment it opened as the sister restaurant to Berkshire restaurant L’ortolan, where chef patron Alan Murchison has held his Michelin star since 2003.Building on his life-long passion for cooking and the finest seasonal, ingredients, Chef Will Holland and his brigade work closely with local suppliers and producers, and wherever possible use produce that is ‘Local to Ludlow’.Since opening the doors in July 2007, the team at La Bécasse has been earning awards and accolades. A prestigious Michelin Star was awarded in January 2009; before that La Bécasse became Ludlow’s only restaurant with three AA Rosettes, was included in Harden’s Restaurant Guide as well as The Good Food Guide published by Which?, and was voted "Best Fine Dining Restaurant" in the West Midlands by Metro within four months of launching.“Fine dining should not be exclusive, pretentious or an intimidating experience,” says Chef Will Holland. "At La Bécasse we aim to provide great food, knowledgeable and professional service, and memorable experiences for all our guests. Winning a Michelin star within 18 months of opening is an acknowledgement of the huge effort that every member of the team has put in since we started.”

“New chef, better than ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

Our second visit to La Becasse and the first since the departure of Will Holland at the end of 2013. We visited on a mid-week evening and were surprised by how quiet it was (just three couples all evening in fact) We opted for the full tasting menu accompanied by the wine flight.
The food was extremely good indeed, fresh ingredients, inventive combinations and notable artistry on the plate. Service was impeccable, friendly and discrete and each course was explained accurately and without fuss.
The cheesboard featured several excellent local blues, and the dessert with the "hidden" taste surprise was inspired! Our near three-hour evening seemed to go in a flash.... always a good sign! The cosy wood panelled dining room gave an intimate atmosphere entirely appropriate to the meal. It seemed a shame that on our visit at least the place was so quiet, clearly they are re-building a reputation, but it certainly has to be a good candidate for the coveted star.

Hello Keith,
Thanks for taking the time to post such a glowing review, it's a great boost for both the kitchen and front of house team to hear such positive reports. The restaurant has indeed been quiet in the past week due to a false report of closure which led to some cancellations. As you can testify, we are indeed open and hopefully going from strength to strength! Hopefully, the fresh start this year with our new team and the continued support of guests such as yourself will enable us to rebuild the brand of this fantastic restaurant.
Many thanks & best wishes from all at La Becasse

“Gone into Liquidation......”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014 via mobile

Reported in the Shropshire Star on Wednesday 4th June. Rumours have abounded in the area for quite some time that they were in financial difficulties. A pity and a loss of fine dining in Ludlow. Hope something positive rises from the ashes.

Hello and thank you for your post. La Becasse continues to trade as usual and since the 18th March 2014 has been operated by Ludlow Restaurants Ltd. The former operator, La Becasse Ltd, went in to administration because of it's ties with Alan Murchison Restaurants which was voluntarily liquidated in November 2013. There restaurant continues to offer the expected high standards and is going from strength to strength under the new team and new operator. Please feel free to discuss this further by contacting us directly at the restaurant.
Kind regards.

“Change for the better - excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014

I have eaten here under both the previous head chef Will Holland and the new head chef Chris O'Halloran. Under Will Holland I had lovely meals but on several occasions found the heavy use of truffles just too much. Since he left, I believe the Michelin star has been lost, but I expect La Becasse to gain it back shortly. I ate here with friends recently and had a really fabulous, creative meal under the new head chef (we all had the gourmand tasting menu). To eat a similar meal in London would cost a small fortune, so the gourmand tasting menu at £65 is really good value, and a fantastic culinary experience. Most definitely one of, if not the best restaurants in Ludlow. (It's also easier to get a reservation here than at Mr Underhills!).

“A very worthwhile place to visit. Very good.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Came here with another couple and had the gourmand. The whole ambience of the place and the friendly waiters together with fantastic food made for a very special occasion. The sommelier was excellent in recommending wines and the choice was very good. The amazing food and flavours are stunning, especially the chef’s amuse bouche veloute. All in all, a brilliant evening – and definitely one worth recommending.

“A substantial improvement since my last review of 14 months ago”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014

Sue and I were given as a present a voucher to eat at La Becasse, it was given to us by a someone who is a chef of a restaurant which appears in the top 20 London Restaurants on this site so I am sure you will understand when I say we had great expectations.

There were a number of changes in both the food and the service since our last time and I would say that those changes are considerably for the better.

We had lunch. I had the balltine whilst Sue had risotto, excellent flavours without there being too many competing for your attention or trying to overpower each other.

I then had the salmon and cod whilst Sue had the venison. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection but what truck me was the cabbage it was rapped in it was so tasty and memorable the cooking maintained the natural flavour.

The intermediary course of almond panna cotta. The granny smith's apple sorbet was out of this world the flavour was just so pure.
TIP If La Becasse has any dish with the Granny Smith apple sorbet order it.

Desert was the passion fruit sorbet for me and cheese for Sue........again purity of flavours.

Well done for those in the kitchen.

In the past the service has always been very professional and attentive but rather starched which did not lend itself for a really relaxed meal. This time the service was as professional and attentive but was much more interactive and friendly this made the experience much more relaxing and heightened the experience of the food. Thank you Sven.

TIP always praise when it is deserved as it encourages the good parts of the service.

Certainly you should consider a meal here as it should not be missed.
