“Excellent for weekend getaway”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

Booked 'Cosy' room through Mr & Mrs Smith.

Excellent decor, very very comfy bed, bathroom/room facilities a high standard.

Couple of niggles:

- Room 12 has a lovely original fireplace which is blocked with a thin piece of MDF. I only know this because at 6.30am I was woken by the sound of raindrops hitting the MDF from a height…easily fixable mind.
- It was a hot weekend when we travelled, and the room was very warm even with both windows wide open. Hotel clearly aware of this as there is a fan in the room which we had to have on all night, but if you struggle to sleep in the heat, avoid Room 12.

Breakfast was excellent and can't fault the staff for their friendly nature.

Would stay again.

Our lasting impression of the hotel is how noisy the room was. We were kept awake by constant traffic noise during our two night stay there. The weather was warm and there is no air-con, so the choice is between windows open and not being able to sleep because of the all night traffic flow past the front of the hotel, or windows closed and being kept awake because you still hear the traffic and the room is too hot! As well as the traffic noise, we could hear other guests talking in rooms next door and below, and the noise from the pump for their showers in morning and evenings. We asked to move rooms, but there was none available. The receptionist suggested we should have used the ear plugs that are provided.
The decor and style is nice, but its a bit grubby in places and needs a deep clean and attention to detail. Carpets on stairs and landings were dirty and worn, rug on one landing was curled up and a certain trip-hazard, but clearly was there to cover up worn carpets underneath. Delivery of laundry on the day we left was a huge shambolic pile under the stairs.
The bar is nice, with good food and breakfast is good. Nice place, but we wouldnt go back or recommend it because of the terrible noise.

Room Tip: Dont take room 22. Its cheapest but is very small and very noisy. Ask for a room at the back of t...

Stayed here for a couple of visits for business trips - but would much rather have been on a romantic getaway - perfect hotel for that! The rooms are beautifully decorated and attention to the details pays off.

The restaurant - for both breakfast and dinner is fantastic - and should you not want to eat there there are options in walking distance.

They also offer parking

Beware, our satnav took us to the Lion Hotel which is a beast of a completely different class, from the brief time spent within while enquiring where the hotel in question was.
The Lion & Pheasant has been beautifully restored to be of the moment, with muted greys and whites. Much thought has gone into a sympathatic restoration with hints of a Tudor past represented in the appropriately exposured beams & pewteresque door furniture.
We had a lovely back room with a modern four poster which was extremely comfortable. The room always smelt fresh and clean on entering. The bathroom was spotless and the shower very efficient.
The service in the restuarant was excellent. Informal but extremely efficient. I've read that the chef comes via the Roux Brothers, which is evident in the beautiful presentation down to the type of plates chosen for each dish and the quality of ingredients. My wife had a beautifully cooked salmon in a nage of vegetables. The lamb, perfectly pink, could've just strolled down from The Shropshire Hills! I would add that this pride in presentation and ingredients extended to the breakfasts. However there were instances of priority of presentation given at the expense of flavour. The garlic soup, in need of more seasoning, presented in a jug to be poured into an extremely wide bowl, cooled instanty. Obviously Chef needs to study some basic physics. My dessert of lemon tart, although again, a picture, comprised of three fingers of filling and soggy base.It could've been cooked in a miniature flan case and still looked elegant. Tart & pastry go together like a lion and pheasant!
Cons:It should be made clear to guests the difficulty in parking and registration numbers should be taken to give priority to residents. PR would be improved in future with regard to a couple of issues. Our booking was made through Mr & Mrs Smith with the provision of half a bottle of wine. This was forgotten by the staff & on informing reception when we left, they wanted to give us the bottle to take home, rather than drop the charge for the half bottle we'd paid for at dinner. Notices in the room about charges for any breakages of room accessories or charges for forgotten items such as toothbrushes, have echoes of run down seaside guest houses, not a hotel of this calibre.

Room Tip: Enter car park FROM the city centre not the river.Back rooms queter than front.

Pros: Very centrally located. Efficient process checking in and out of the hotel. Helpful staff. Excellent food at the hotel restaurant, albeit a tad expensive. Nice room with a very comfortable bed. I slept well without using the ear plugs provided on the bedside table, though I will confess to being a heavy sleeper.

Cons: Right faucet wasn't fastened into the sink so it moved around, aside from not working. Bug squished on the outside of the tub which I'll allow perhaps the cleaner hadn't noticed. Drapery rod in the bedroom is very light and wasn't attached to the brackets so the whole thing came loose when I tried to pull the curtains closed - though this was easy enough to put it back in place by standing on a chair. Leaflets about the hotel and the room service menu on the desk showed previous spills. First floor hallway carpets are quite worn. Combined these took away from the stylish impression the rest of the hotel made.

Stayed overnight whilst travelling south, From the outside slightly unimposing the fun started whilst attempting to get into the car park. Approaching from over the bridge I found the narrow entrance all but impossible to navigate. On extricating my vehicle from the entrance to the car park we were informed that it was much easier to enter from the city side of the hotel (which it was!!!) Once inside we were impressed with the clean modern look of the place the heritage colour scheme was very calming which after the excitement of parking the car was most welcome! We had planned to venture into the centre of the city to find a restaurant but we were lured into the restaurant after seeing the menu. I am glad we stayed as we were treated to a delicious meal with excellent service. Breakfast was equally impressive so thumbs up for the food! The room was absolutely fine the bathroom clean and the shower lovely! all in all a great place to stay and eat thoroughly recommended

Room Tip: forget the room always enter the car park from the city side!!!!!

Recently returned from staying at this boutique hotel through a booking with Mr and Mrs Smith.
On arrival check in was quick friendly and informative.
On entering our room there was a strong unpleasant smell the windows where slightly open so I hoped this would soon go. I then noticed a used glass obviously from a previous guest!! The room was at the rear of the property and a good size (superior room) it was relatively clean but could have been better as there were stains on carpet and chair, fireplaces very dusty. Felt the room could have been a bit more homely maybe pictures on the wall ornaments etc.
On our way out we informed the lady on the desk about the smell in our room. She was very pleasant and took us to see another available room which did smell much better but was at the front of the hotel and after having read the reviews regarding these rooms being noisy decided to stick with the one we had. She did come to the room and agreed to smelling the smell herself but offered no other solution !! We opened the windows as wide as possible and went out to explore. On return the room did smell much better.
We ate the two nights at the restaurant as the food and service was to an excellent standard with a good choice. Breakfast was also excellent good quality food that we could not fault.
Communal areas were very nice our only complaint again was dirty carpets ( time for a change ). We believe this place could be even better than it is with a few minor updates and a little more attention to detail.

Overall we had a nice stay we thought the staff worked very hard remaining pleasant and helpful at all times.
if we are ever in the area again we may consider staying.
