The peace and tranquility that the building generates provides a great atmosphere of overwhelming calm. It is a place for regenerating you batteries, and giving you the opportunity to reflect on the visitors/ worshippers who have entered in the last 1000 years.

The setting for the Cadfael books and TV series. Due the destruction of the monasteries by Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII there are no buildings left so this is basically a church tour. Interesting artifacts and efficient volunteer guides.

A remarkable piece of history remains in what Henry VIII kindly spared for the locals, when destroying what would have been a magnificent Benedictine Monastery. So, a Catholic place of worship for over five hundred years, now nearing four hundred years with the Monarch as it's head, The Abbey Church of Saint Peter an Saint Paul (as officially named) continues as a place of worship to a dedicated congregation and up to 30,000 visitors each year. There is a gift shop with some interesting and well sourced items with something for everyone - all reasonably priced. Well worth a visit when in the county town, whether you're looking to find out about the Abbey's interesting history, or for a peaceful moment of prayer. (Your visit should only take around an hour.)
