I booked a day at the Vineyard including lunch as a birthday gift for my husband. This tour can be booked directly at the vinyard or on one of the many 'away day gift voucher' type websites. They charge about 90 pounds - I paid about half of that. Either way it was hugely over priced. The facilities are poor - lunch is served in a lean too attached to a barn - it was not particularly clean. Cutlery was put in the middle of the table as was dishes of coleslaw, salad and potato salad - all covered in cling film. We were given a plate with a slice of pie on it. With the exception of the salad it was all store bought and the cheapest available. Desert was a piece of cake. Two bottles of wine were on the table - one white one red. We were not offered any more. The talk that followed about the vinyard and the wine making process was very interesting and the chap told a good tale. We were give a bottle of wine as part of the package deal. We too were told in no uncertain terms not to lose our sticker. Wine tasting followed - we tasted 4 wines. Our overall impression was maximum cost minimum outlay.

I was lucky enough to be given a gift experience to visit the Wroxter Roman Vineyard on the 2nd of August. We arrived on a lovely sunny day only to be greeted by a surly sour-faced female member of staff who robotically asked us for our name and issued us with a sticker to wear with the threat that if we lost it we would not receive the bottle of wine included with the experince. It was not the nicest of welcomes. We tentatively made our way through to the seating area which gradually filled up until there were approximately 50 people in the room. The day improved vastly after that when the tour began, hosted by a lovely chap. The presentation began with a history of Wroxeter and the Roman settlement and decline. We were then taken outside and shown how the vines were planted and why along with various details of the fermentation and harvesting process. The wine tasting was next, where we were given 4 white wines to taste and one red. Once the tasting was finished, we were served lunch and told by the host that wine would be free flowing and that if the table ran out it wouldn't be down to them! A traditional Roman Pie was presented which contained turkey, ham and beef and was served with potato salad and coleslaw. This was followed by carrot cake or toffee apple cake, both of which were delicious. However, when I asked for an additional knife and fork because there weren't enough on our table, I was once again taken aback by the first member of staff who declared all tables had enough cutlery before grudgingly giving me another set. When another member of the table asked for more wine, she was abruptly told by this member of staff that they kept count on each table and that ours had had three bottles and would receive no more. We all felt like small children being chastised by the headmistress.

All in all it was a very good experience and thoroughly enjoyable, but I do think the vineyard need to have a word with their one member of staff who is sadly letting them down.

Oh, and the Roman ruins further up the road are well worth a visit once the tour is over.

This was a really good day out. We managed to book a trip at the last minute, the owners were really friendly and made us welcome.
The day started with the history of Wroxeter and then we were informed on the vineyards.
We were given 3 types of white wine to tast (very nice) and lunch (home made ham, turkey pie) all this for £10.

So if you have 3 to 4 hours to spare and you like wine book a tour.
