Description: A landmark dining destination in the historic town of Bath, The Chequers is a beautifully restored gastropub on Rivers Street that has been serving customers since 1776. Offering a slice of local living to visitors from out of town, The Chequers is an elegant escape from the city’s bustling boutiques and is only a short walk from the Circus and the Royal Crescent. Serving a menu of home cooked, local & seasonal food alongside a premium selection of wines, local ciders and real ales, this is a fantastic place to spend an evening over a bottle or two with friends and family. On the menu you’ll find gastropub fare unrivalled in Bath with old pub favourites including their award winning Sunday lunch given a classy makeover. The Chequers restaurant also caters for business meetings and private parties.

I've eaten at Chequers a couple of times and never been disappointed Last night was no exception. Two of our party shared a salt and pepper squid but it was that good all 4 of us tucked it. It was a large portion. I then had gnocchi with tempura vege, samphire and green beans. Beautiful and light. My work colleagues had lamb, roast CID and baked black bream. All beautiful looking and clean plates after 15 mind! The lemon dessert (deconstructed lemon meringue almost) was a joy! It's not cheap but it's more than a gastro pub in my eyes. Well done and we'll be back!

Excellent fish& chips .but would have been better if our wooden table had
not been a sticky mess. They claimed to be short staffed but that does not
justify sticky tables.Disappointed but they were clearly having a bad day!

Dear Sarvessa,

Thank you for taking the time to review us. I can only apologise that your experience was not up to our usual standard. You are quite right that no excuse should ever be made for sub-standard service or a sticky table - this is something that we have spoken to our staff about since reading your review, and I am confident that the issue has now been solved.

I do hope that you will try us again sometime soon, and that we can restore some faith in the dining experience that we are capable of providing.

Kind regards,

Clare

Based on tripadvisor reviews, The Chequers was the first restaurant we had our meal upon arriving at Bath. I must say my friends and I were absolutely happy with our meals and the service we received. Every dish served were delicious including the desserts. We had a nice, relaxing time at the restaurant, and it did set a very high standard for the meals that follows which definitely did not quite meet the mark. I will definitely go back to The Chequers again.

Booked ahead and glad we did as it was fairly busy. We ordered the sharing chicken crown roast and we stunned, it was fab. If you plan to come and order this do not even think about ordering a starter! Food superb as was our bottle of french viognier.

Food was decent, though not really great - sounded better on the menu than it was in reality. Quite expensive overall for the actual quality (at least in terms of execution). Service was very slow and non-attentive. They had no draft ales available - really shocking in a pub and spoiled the experience. Dessert was poorly constructed. Overall, would have been a decent pub at half the price, but for a gastro pub charging premium prices, they need to do much better.
