“A Tight Squeeze”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2011

We stayed for 3 nights at the Halcyon having selected this hotel on the basis of good reviews and location. My husband has limited mobility so accessibility is always a major concern. The location was excellent and our welcome from Hector was warm and friendly. However, our room was a major disappointment. There is no lift in this Georgian conversion and we booked a studio (area with bed plus adjacent 'kitchenette') because that was the only type of room on the ground floor. The bed took up most of the space in the bedroom area and was so close to the built-in wardrobe that the doors couldn't be opened. A hanging rail had been erected on the other side of the room. The space between the corner of the bed and the wall on one side was 14 inches. Squeezing past meant hitting the bed or the plasma screen on the wall above it. The w.c. in the bathroom was jammed up against the wall on one side. The kitchenette provided a kettle, microwave and a toaster (I had to stand on a chair to reach the microwave and the toaster was further out of reach.) We made use of the kettle - didn't need a kitchenette for that. The complimentary 'tea and coffee' was minus coffee so we had to buy our own. The studio was described as a possible batchelor pad and undoubtedly it was more suited to single occupancy. At £145 including VAT it didn't measure up to other hotel rooms in which we have stayed.

Room Tip: Avoid a studio unless you need cooking facilities

Great location - Bath is so easy to walk around. Good dinner recommendations and excellent service. Rooms were a little small but really nice. Wifi was not working in our rooms at the time but was working downstairs. Breakfast room / bar downstairs has a great vibe. This is a hotel with character and we would definately stay here again.

We booked the Halcyon for a 2 night stay due to its close proximity to our wedding venue and we couldn’t have been happier with our choice. The 1st days stay I arrived with my mum early as we had beauty appointments to go to, the welcome from the hotel was lovely and they couldn’t of been any more accommodating, helping us in with all of our wedding items and storing them for us in an unoccupied room due to ours not being ready as we were early. My mum returned later that day to be helped up the stairs with all the items and once again the staff couldn’t have been any more helpful. The bedroom was light, clean very modern and tastefully decorated with nice little touches. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant which I think is a very good idea, there is so much choice by just stepping out of the front door of the hotel as it’s so centrally located. We chose a Thai restaurant just on the end of the rank of buildings called Mai Thai, here we had a beautiful Thai meal and would defo eat there again. We decided to have an early night but fancied a drink before we retired to our room. We popped down to the basement of the Halcyon to their bar called Circo, where they serve the best cocktails I’ve ever tasted, and believe me I’ve sampled many!!!!The next day we went down to reception and had a lovely welcome from Hector & his team with kind wishes for my wedding day. We went down to the circo bar and had a great quality continental breakfast, with fresh juices, fruit, crispy croissants bagels with salamis and cheese. We had the most amazing wedding and when my new husband and I returned to our room late at night, we were greeted with a lovely congratulations card from Hector and all his team. These really are personal touches you wouldn’t just get at a chain hotel and definitely sets it aside from the rest. All in all this really is a truly special gem of a hotel right in the centre of Bath, nothing is too much trouble for these guys & thank you all for making our stay with you perfect.

A recent two night stay was made delightful by some very friendly and helpful staff working in a well equipped and beautiful hotel. The hotel is in a prime location to see all of bath, no need to use your car as parking opposite hotel and I will be revisiting again, stunning

We stayed for just one night but we were extremely pleased with the room and the lovely staff. Five minutes walk from the train station and five minutes to the Roman Baths. The hot water bottles are a lovely touch. We were in Bath on the wettest day in several years, but it didn't dampen our opinion of this lovely hotel.

I think like many other reviewers I am a little baffled as how to rate the Halcyon.

Location: excellent central location. Spitting distance to train and bus stations and shopping district.

Staff: very friendly and helpful. Night porter was prompt to answer complaint.

Rooms: I had a standard room for 1 night which was fine as I was travelling alone but would have been cramped with 2 people. It was very warm at night with a window that wouldn't stay open and a fan so noisy you couldn't use it and sleep. The decor was nice and bathroom had a great shower. The hairdryer was powerful enough for a change and the tea making facilities to be expected.

Breakfast: a slightly disappointing continental breakfast with pastries, breads and cereals. Eggs to cook yourself and whole fruit. Perhaps the addition of cut fruit and yoghurt would help. For the price I did expect more.

Value for money: at £125 for a midweek night I would not say it was value for money given the parking is an extra £6-12. For that price I would expect a full breakfast, slightly more room with drawers for storage, and enough room to open your case on the floor. I was frustrated by the drunken idiots who returned to their rooms at 1 to knock on every door for their entertainment! I would also expect parking or atleast discounted parking at this price
