“Central Bath”
Reviewed 23 January 2014

My wife and I stayed here and went to the Christmas market. Centrally located in Bath so it was ideal. Our bathroom could have done with some updating but all in all a good hotel and we would stay there again.

Thank you for your positive recommendation and I am pleased that you found the location of Dukes on Great Pulteney Street convenient for your visit to the Christmas market. You correctly note we reside within two Grade 1 listed antique Georgian townhouses, our maintenance and refurbishment is an ongoing task handled by a small cadre of tradesmen. As a boutique property we pride ourselves on a warm and personal welcome from a team of dedicated professionals; supported with a lovingly prepared ‘best in class’ cooked breakfast.

Our recent stay with yourselves was fantastic from arrival to departure.....the staff especially mike are fantastic the hotel is full of Georgian charm definitely the best hotel we have stayed in Bath, breakfast was delicious. Friends came with us and they too enjoyed their stay. Being so close to the city centre is just an added bonus. We will definitely be back soon, can't wait.........

Photos of room looked good when I booked online but the room was a bit shabby and furnishings had seen better days. I booked a bedroom and sitting room, but it really wasn't necessary as the sitting room was really shabby, just closed the door and never went in there! Good location In Great Pulteney Street. Stayed for 2 nights - had the breakfast on one occasion which was quite good. The day one Manager pointed me in the direction of the best coffee in Bath .. which was an excellent recommendation - Colonna & Small's Speciality Coffee.

I note that you stayed with us over six months ago; back in June 2013. I am pleased that you thoroughly enjoyed our ‘coffee house’ recommendation. I think the comments of countless guests before and after the time of your visit add great balance and perspective to your review.

Our location on Great Pulteney Street offers guests a spectacular Georgian walk into the heart of Bath. Thank you for the ‘full marks’; we rely on a team of fifteen professionals, committed to showing Dukes off at her best and ensuring each and every guests has a great time. As you note our Grade 1 listing prevents the introduction of a lift; please request a room on the lower floors if required. We pride ourselves on offering guests a freshly cooked breakfast of the very highest standard, using an array of fresh high quality distinctive produce.

As a treat for my boyfriends birthday, we decided to go to Bath and doing some research, this seemed like the nicest hotel for in my price range. Upon booking, I spoke to a very helpful lady who gave me some lovely suggestions on what we could do in Bath.
When we arrived we were greeted by Mike who was EXTREMELY helpful and he really made this hotel something special for the both of us. He was very kind to give us a map and note down the best places to eat - his knowledge of Bath is outstanding. We did have lunch at one of his suggestions (Hall and Woodhouse) to which we were most pleased.
The room was wonderful - lovely amounts of space and the bathroom was a good size too.
There is only a couple of things I would note: for those who may be hard of walking is that there is no lift - and if you are on one of the upper floors - it may be a bit of a climb. This is not a problem for us however despite being on the 4th floor. Also car parking isn't guaranteed - you are given a permit among arrival but there may not be a space - as we found when we left for the day and then came back again meaning we had to park in a couple of streets away. However due to the location - everywhere is easily in walking distance.
Breakfast was also wonderful - plenty of choice and the blueberry pancakes were lovely.
Mike was extremely kind to us - and I do hope if we were ever to return to Bath he would be there still !

Thank you for taking the time to write a very generous and considered review. As you note Dukes resides within two, six storey antique Georgian townhouses. Whilst magnificent, we do not have the benefit of a lift and our Grade 1 listing prevents any alteration. We are always more than happy to assist with moderate luggage and will always endeavour to find guests rooms on a lower floor if requested. From a positive perspective ‘the climb’ may be seen as part of the experience and insight into living within a Georgian townhouse. With regards to parking we have access to over 600 on street bays; as you note one is normally able to park with reasonable ease however when the city is particularly busy; with an event; one may need to park on a neighbouring street. Very pleased that your bedroom and breakfast were wonderful and that Mike extended considerable kindness towards you both.

Having tried unsuccessfully to book the MacDonald Bath Spa Hotel where we've stayed previously, we found a review for Duke's Hotel and decided to book it. Well-what a lovely hotel, with such friendly and helpful staff. Mike was especially nice. As it was near Christmas, Bath was the most perfect place to be for Christmas shopping and being together as a family. We were amazed one morning to go down for breakfast to find a Christmas parcel for each of us at the table! Mike was so generous in giving us a gift-he didn't know it but my Mother had just died and so this was a very touching and kind thing to do as far as I was concerned. We stayed in the Athol room with a huge four poster bed and my daughter had her own fold away bed which was very comfortable she said. The cotton sheets were very soft and it was great to have a proper big bath and everything was spotless. It's also so close to the centre of Bath-fantastic to get around with a tired child! Having a booked permit to park our car was what sold it to me too-definitely an asset for the hotel to be able to provide. We will definitely stay again when next coming to Bath from Essex.

Room Tip: The bed in the Athol room is much bigger than it looks in the photos.

Bath is a truly beautiful city. For the attentive, nearly every street holds a little gem of antique design and construction. The city prides herself on a wonderful ratatouille of independent retailers tucked down historic streets and pedestrian lanes. These independents enhanced by the Christmas market stalls are a pleasure to behold. Delighted that you all shared such a relaxing and refreshing time in Bath. Many thanks.
