“Great couple of days”
Reviewed 25 March 2014

This was the third stay of our short honeymoon. My husband had been raving about this place and wow you should see the room, it was my understanding that he requested a certain room as it was our honeymoon but on arrival was disappointed that he was not allocated . The room we were allocated was fantastic although a little untidy to say the least, stains on the carpet and the bathroom needs a little cosmetic work, but it is a very old property so we didn't mention it. The staff were excellent and should be congratulated as it was genuine not false and the breakfast was fantastic. We arrived home early one night and asked if we could have a nite cap, this was also not too much to ask and was even brought up to our room. Ah the room hidden on the top floor of the house 6 sets of stairs not a great start, the room was big but the view, well there was none we were surrounded by wall and chimneys what a disappointment. We have to thank them for the chocolates and card, this was a lovely touch, would I go there agsin, yes but would ask for a ground or first floor room, not that you get what you ask for, but beware when booking this B&B ask which floor it's on esp if you find it difficult to walk up and down stairs. As a listed building I'm sure they will bot get granted permission for a lift, nice few days anywsy

Room Tip: Avoid Somerset as it is on the top floor, no view at all. 6 sets of stairs to get to it

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am very pleased to hear that you found our team excellent and that you appreciated our receptionist bringing a ‘night cap’ up to your room. As detailed within the response to your husband a couple of reviews earlier, the Wellington room was unfortunately already booked, and so we chose a room that we felt would most appeal, I am pleased that you found the room fantastic - though in need of a little TLC. Once again allow me to invite you to contact me and we will look to confirm a reservation in the Wellington for later in the spring. Prompted by your review we have had the carpet cleaned and the bathroom redecorated. As you may appreciate these housekeeping activities are ongoing - the bathroom was last decorated less than six months ago! With thanks

Previous reviewers beat me to it on the breakfast quality and in particular the scrambled eggs - credit where it is due - well done Alex. We stayed only one night between visiting the ballet and the Baths, but this hotel completed a memory lane visit after so long since being in this beautiful city. Excellent staff attention to detail and customer contact and just enjoy the stairs as good exercise !

‘just enjoy the stairs as good exercise’ – thank you ! Dukes sits within two Grade 1 listed Georgian townhouses. Each of our rooms offer up a unique character as comprehensively described on our website. Georgian townhouses, spread over six floors, are one of the defining features describing the world heritage city of Bath. Due to their scale, many have been converted into flats and their grandeur lost forever. Dukes is one of very, very few Georgian properties inviting guests to wallow in the scale and history of these antique buildings, as an overnight hostelry. Large rattling sash windows, voluminous rooms and squeaking floorboards, offering up over 200 years of history, rest at the heart of our charm. Delighted that you enjoyed your stay and yes we agree, Alex prepares a superb breakfast!

Stayed here a few years ago, when they still offered Dinner. You will get a genuine warm welcome from the staff. Amy was on front of house when we arrived, and was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. It's a bit of a climb to the top of the house if you are over 60, but it is Grade 1 Listed, and you can stop and look at the pictures.
Breakfast was lovely, I wish my scrambled eggs and smoked salmon tasted like this. Car parking on street was available free all day, and it is a short walk to the centre of town, Eat at Number Eleven Restaurant in town, you will not regret it!

Delighted to hear that you stayed at Dukes a few years ago and that you thoroughly enjoyed your more recent trip to Bath. As you note we are housed within two Grade one listed Georgian townhouses. We offer a personalised booking service and over the phone we are always very happy to help ensure that our room proposal best meet your needs. We offer a couple of rooms on the ground floor and numerous flexible options for rooms on the lower floors. Thank you for the compliments of our breakfast, our smoked salmon is sourced from Severn & Wye smokery and is a lovely tasty companion for our buttery scrambled eggs. Many thanks.

I would really liked to of given Dukes 5 stars and an excellent rating but there were a couple of things that were not quite right for us my Wife and I were celebrating our Honeymoon and we did ask for a particular room that was the Wellington but we were allocated a different room on the top floor with no views the Somerset.

I suppose you cannot please all everyone but we were so dissapointed I understand that the hotel cannot have a lift due to its listed building status so nothing you can do about the stairs we just had to grin and bear them but what we didnt expect was stains on the carpet and on the sofabed and the bathroom was not very nice when one is spending over £125 a night we did not expect stained carpets also the room was very dark and had no veiw except that of stone walls I had been telling my new Wife how fantastic Dukes was we felt a little let down by our room allocation!

Plus points are the staff they are very attentive and take the oppotunity to engage you in conversation the chocolates and card were very a very nice touch thank you and breakfast is very good with lots of choice.

Room Tip: Somerset is on the top floor and is very dark with no view!

Unfortunately the Wellington room had been booked by another guest and so on this occasion we were not able to meet your request. The Somerset room is a light spacious room up in the mansard of this property; on the top floor. Somewhat tucked away with views of the Bath skyline we felt the room would be a romantic option for your honeymoon celebrations – I am sorry that you did not feel this was the case. I am pleased to hear that you found our team attentive; enjoyed the complimentary card & chocolates and found our breakfast offered ‘lots of choice’. We take honeymoons, anniversaries and special celebrations very seriously; and so may I ask that you contact me in order that we may organise the Wellington room for you at a preferential rate later in the spring? With thanks.

We have just had two wonderful days in Bath made even better by the friendly staff at Dukes hotel, they were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. On arrival Mike gave us our Parking permit and then printed a town map and gave us ideas on what to do. I should also like to mention Amy who was also very helpful and who made our breakfast time a delight. Thank you

Thank you Dukes. We have enjoyed a fantastic weekend at this lovely relaxing Georgian hotel. My husband has surprised me with a visit to Bath to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.
From the moment we arrived, we were spoilt with great hospitality.
The room was a great size, the bed extremely comfortable & the bath delightful!
Our full English breakfast was delicious! Nothing was too much trouble.
An extremely pleasant stay.

I would like to thank Mike and all of the staff for such a wonderful evening away for my husbands birthday. From the excellent communication at the time of booking, to the wonderful help advice and knowledge of bath given to us you made our stay one to remember.

Our room was beautiful well presented and very clean. The birthday box of chocolates and card was a very kind thought. Breakfast was excellent. All the staff make this a fab place to stay.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write an energising review for the team. As the custodians of a 200 year old antique it is very refreshing and invigorating to be described with ‘WOW’ and ‘FAB’ in the same review. Mike and indeed all our team are friendly, very proud of Bath and very happy to share their knowledge and enhance the stay of those visiting this wonderful World Heritage City. Delighted that your birthday was a happy and very enjoyable celebration. Thank you.
