My wife and I have just returned from a marvellous 3 night stay at Dukes. We first stayed there 35 years ago for our honeymoon, when it was St Monica's! I think it has gone through many changes over those years.
The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly...from the moment we arrived, checked-in and got the car parked (thank goodness for the car park permit!) to checking out. If we had any questions about getting around or eating in the City, they were either immediately answered or investigated and subsequently answered.
I think the hotel definitely benefits from focusing on bed and breakfast...after all, there are many great places to eat in Bath. Consequently, the breakfast itself - being freshly prepared to order - and the service from the staff is second to none.
One really nice touch was finding a complimentary bottle of wine and a card in our room on arrival, as they had picked up on the fact that this was a special occasion. Even nicer was that they were more than happy to swap the bottle of white for a bottle of red (Mrs paulrfc only drinks white if it has bubbles in it!) despite the risk of spillages on the carpet!
The only issue we had with our stay was that we asked for a room on the top floor. It would probably not have been an issue at our last stay (when we were 35 years younger)...but at least we got plenty of cardio-vascular exercise...and of course, this was entirely my fault, having been warned of the absence of a lift.
If it's another 35 years before we return, then we'll have to consider a room a little lower. But I wouldn't be surprised if we don't wait that long!
Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
