“Great hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 31 July 2010

Me and my wife stayed at the Dukes Hotel for 1 night in July. The building is Georgian style, and we were given a parking permit so we could park on the road outside the hotel (which is very useful in a city like Bath). The location of this hotel is one of the best things about it. Located on Great Pulteney street, it is within 5 minutes walking distance of the city centre, but far enough out so that you are unlikely to be disturbed late in the night by any noisy people on their way home. Very conveniant if you are planning on walking around the city centre a lot. (Which we did)

The room we stayed in was Athol, a four poster suite, and it was far bigger than I expected it to be, the bed was very nice and comfortable and we even had a small hallway with wardrobes in between the bedroom and (again large) bathroom. We were very impressed.

The cooked breakfast in the morning was very nice but nothing out of this world. The receptionists were very welcoming and friendly, and offered to help with our bags up the stairs. Overall, very good service, and with a smile.

Although this is not the cheapest hotel in bath, we would happily stay here again if visiting.

Stayed for 3 night in 2 rooms in July - Ok overall, average experience but not quite up to the raves of some reviewers on this site, in my opinion. I was disappointed with the "garden view" of the "deluxe" room - it was mainly of the unappealing wall of the building next door. If you got up close and looked down, yes, you could see the garden, but it was a bit of a stretch! Also disappointed that our two rooms were in different parts of the hotel & up 4 flights of different stairs (both on 2nd Floor). The free Wifi internet in rooms is also almost non existent (I did manage to connect in odd spots on occassion in the middle of the night, but usually not). There is, however, a computer & printer provided free of charge in reception room & you can pick up the wifi here too.

Positives: 1) good location (beautiful street, quite & out of the hussle & bussle, but very close walk to everything), 2) free internet in reception, and 3) the rooms were a large size and nicely furnished in period style (a little worn, but quite nice).
Negatives: 1) The 4 flights of stairs & no lift (Dukes promise to carry your bags up, but we had to ask for this on arrival and then it was done rather begrudgingly, and we carted them down ourselves on departure - all the way rather noisily down 4 steep flights of stairs). We were also allocated rooms in different parts of the hotel so had to go up & down many times to see each other.
2) no air con (fan provided) and the windows only opened a few inches - we had very hot uncomfortable nights, 3) stingy on the provision of shampoo, soap etc - one small bottle/cake for 2 adults... 4)asked for an iron/ironing board but it kept being "forgetten" - finally arrived 2 days later, 5) if two female adults are sharing a room and ask for the room to be in a Twin set up - why would you push the beds together? A little space between beds is good & there was certainly enough room to do so. We did it ourselves anyway! Average breakfast - eggs to order good, but the pastries/fruit etc buffet was lacking in fresh offereings (pastries a bit stale & tinned/dried fruit only) & finally 6) very dirty kettle provided - suggest you check the inside before use as I wouldnt like to drink what was inside ours - great big hunks of loose flaky material. It was cleaned (when requested) the next day, but on arrival the girl couldn't find a clean one in the hotel -it shows cleaning is a bit superficial.

Also, do check if you are offered a cup of tea while working on your computer in the reception room before breakfast - I accepted (thinking it was part of the bed/breakfast & free) & was surprised to be charged for it on departure (the charge was removed when I queried it with the manager). Glad I didn't accept the "large G & T" playfully offered another afternoon!

I would recommend & possibly stay again, but it does have its draw backs.

Stayed here for one night with my husband and daughter. Top marks for a fabulous location in a beautiful street just a few minutes easy stroll to the city centre. Managed to park right outside the hotel using one of the hotel permits, which made life so easy.

Warm reception from very friendly and knowledgable Reception Manager Mike who offered helpful advice on things to do. Our room was on the top floor (Roxburghe) but we'd been warned on booking about the absence of a lift. However, the night we stayed was the warmest of the year so far and our room, which was a fairly small master double with a tiny bathroom, was incredibly hot, even with a fan unit running and the windows open. The staff very quickly responded to our request for two more fans but they didn't have much of an impact. Unfortunate, because the room and bed were comfortable and I'm sure our sleep quality would have been much better on a cooler night.

Service was on the whole excellent, with one exception. We went down to the garden terrace just before 2pm hoping for something to eat but when the waitress came to take our order at 2.03pm she told us they'd stopped serving (at 2pm although we hadn't been aware of this) and could only give us biscuits with our drinks. A little inflexible I think; she could have offered us something that would have been quick and simple for the kitchens to prepare.

Dinner in the Cavendish Restaurant was good, although only a handful of tables were occupied which left the atmosphere wanting. Breakfast was enjoyable and plentiful - buffet plus cooked to order options (traditional English, haddock and poached eggs, kippers etc) and toast/tea/coffee on request - and service was great.

We would definitely consider staying at Dukes again, although we'd request a different room.

We stayed at the Dukes Hotel after seeing it on this website, well, we are so glad we did.

We were upgraded to a four-poster suite as the previous occupants of our room had run away with the key, but no complaints this end, the room was huge, massive bed, really clean, comfortable and spacious.

The breakfast was fantastic too, just right... only 10 minutes walk into town, amazingly helpful and friendly staff, what more could you want?

We absolutely love Bath, it's an amazing city, we shall be back later this year and DEFINATELY staying at the Dukes!

Dukes is perfectly located in a beautiful street, minutes away from the river, Roman Baths and shops. The staff are extremely friendly and Mike was spot on with the recommendations he gave us (boat trip and pubs/restaurants). We had a spotless suite, very comfortable. Excellent breakfast. We would certainly return to this hotel without hesitation on our next visit to Bath.

Stayed here for a break away from the kids. Lovely setting that suits Bath and very attractive rooms. Staff warm and welcoming from the start, helpful and attentive throughout. Food both at breakfast and evening meal was excellent with good choice and was top quality.
We were fortunate enough to stay in a suite, which was very roomy and comfortable. The location is a mere 5 minute walk into the city and handily placed for all amenities.
Only possible down side was that there could have been problems with parking near by but on a very busy bank holiday weekend we were still able to park next to the hotel.
Look forward to going back again.

We stayed at Dukes over the May Bank Holiday weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. Dukes is located in a Grade I listed building within about a 10-15 minute walk from the center of Bath. Our room was spacious and charming, with a beautiful view. The staff were all helpful and knowledgeable. Be warned though - there are no lifts/elevators in the building. Some of the rooms are on higher floors.
