“Great spa hotel with super views and gardens”
Reviewed 18 August 2011

We spent two nights at this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We chose a "Bath skyline view twin" room and would strongly recommend these - they are on the 3rd floor at the front of the hotel and you enjoy a superb view across the city. Some of them are interconnecting so, if that is a problem for you, ask for one that isn't.

The hotel is in a quiet location, about a mile from the city centre, with a pleasant walk down a hill through the hotel's own splendid gardens and the Sydney gardens via the newly reopened Holburne Museum (free) and then along the flat and splendid Great Pulteney Street before crossing Pulteney bridge into the city. It's a £5 taxi ride.
There is ample parking for your own car and the hotel charges a modest £5 for your entire stay.
The spa facilities are free and very good: indoor 15 metre pool, outdoor heated hydro pool and a variety of saunas, steam room, ice room, showers. The only complaint is that, for a hotel of over 100 rooms, the pools are a little small and that the child usage hours of 10am to 5pm are too long. There are beds for relaxing on inside and out. We didn't visit the gym so can't comment on that.
Full breakfast was included in our rate and was very good - excellent selection of cereals, juices, hams, cheeses, fruit etc and very good cooked breakfast. We had tea and a sandwich one evening at the outside bar overlooking the gardens - very good but a little pricey perhaps.
All in all, if you want to go to Bath and stay in a very good hotel with good facilities, then consider the Macdonald Bath Spa.

My wife and I sayed at The Bath Spa Hotel for two nights. The accommodation, service and facilities were excellent. We dined in the Velour dining room both nights and enjoyed good food and wine with service to match! We enjoyed use of the Spa facilities, especially the heated outdoor pool. A visit we will remember for a long time and hope to return in the future.

We had a 3 night break which we'd scheduled to fit in around the Christmas Markets in the town centre. Whilst not a cheap place to stay the quality of the surroundings, location and the hotel spa are all fantastic. We'd booked a spa session at the Thermae Spa in town but having tried the spa the previous evening, I wish we hadn't wasted our money as the hotel spa was much nicer and much less crowded. Breakfasts are great and are a good way to start the day before wandering along Poultney Street into town.

This is the place to stay when visiting Bath.
It's 5-star and within walking distance of the centre of the city.
Our room was spotless and the hotel's spa facilities are second to none, especially the small heated pool which extends outside into the grounds.
The quality of food was excellent and the whole feel of the place is luxury.
We've stayed here on numerous occasions and never been disappointed.
You won't be either!

We had a lovely sunday night stay at the Bath Spa Hotel, very welcoming at reception, our classic double had been upgraded to a four poster room in the original part of the building. The standard of the room, furnishings and the toiletries were definitely 5 star, the hotel is a short walk into the city centre which has a wide choice of alternate eateries. We were very impressed by the professional, efficient service at our breakfast and a vast array of high quality buffet items which were continually replenished by friendly staff, a couple of real characters too! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing break with great food and service in luxurious surroundings, and lovely grounds.

We booked our 2 night stay via a hotel booking site. When we got the price we rang the hotel to see if they could match the price. The receptionist I spoke to virtually argued that the price I had managed to find didn't exsist -this was the start.
When we arrived I asked if there were any upgrades, which I do in any hotel, and was told, "well I've already checked you in now!!'. So that was out of the question! THe reception staff were generally cold and unfriendly which is not a good start to any stay.
We had one drink in the bar - the empty, atmospheric LESS bar, it was £14.80 for a vodka!!! It was a double measure but please come on! This just screams you are being ripped off. They did oblige with a half measure when I asked but the mixer cost £2.00 so the vodka and diet coke cost nearly £10. Which is quite ridiculous.
The rooms are fine, nothing special compared to any other hotel. The Concierge staff couldn't have been more helpful if they tried which is one saving grace.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel - it is overpriced for what you get, the reception staff make you feel like an interruption to their job not the reason for it, and the bar is massively over priced.

i have stayed a lots of 5 star hotels and this is NOT a 5 star hotel. scruffy, tired and very poor service. they are typically british in their defense of a poor hotel.
they are completely anti kids so even if you get a £29 weekend break dont take the kids
the beds are dirty, the rooms need paiting - the staff need a good bath and clean uniforms
the spa is always full so book your spa treatment 2 years ahead if you are going to risk staying
great building and good location for bath
food very average and they charge you £5 to park on top of the £500 per night!
also - the air con in the rooms doesnt work and when pointed out we got a quick fire reply to suggest it was air cooling not air conditioning and so won't cool the room. EH?!?!?!?!?!?!
