“Great 5* Hotel for the Price”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

Had a lovely couple of days here. Set in a lovely location and within easy access of the historic city of Bath. It is really a fine hotel and is excellent value.
The staff are always smiling and happy to assist with any problem, however one time took about 30 seconds to answer a phone. Even though it is still winter, the garden still looked like it is still being cared for and is pleasnt to the eye.

All in all a great trip

Stayed here with my partner for a Friday night. We had booked a classic double and got a room that was nice (I wpuld say it was equivalent to a good 4 star room) except that it was an adjoining room. As soon as our neighbours arrived we heard them. We could hear every word they said and when they closed their cupboard doors our adjoining door rattled. They weren't being particularly loud, it was just abysmal sound proofing. We didnt particularly want to make friends (!) so asked if we could be moved and ended up upgrading to a suite: we paid £100 extra for that. The staff told us (more than once) that most of the hotel rooms were adjoining. We had also requested a quiet room and it was a special occasion so we were quite unhappy. That's not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel so if this would bother you, check first.

The suite was lovely, huge bathroom with shower, bath and underfloor heating. Big bed and a little living room with a sofa. Minibar was complementary and so were champagne and canapés, newspapers etc. We had a butler too. No complaints at all about the suite, it was impeccably clean and luxurious. So definitely a 5 star service but with a hefty price tag.

The spa was lovely with a thermal outdoor pool, steamroom, sauna, ice shower and various types of shower (fragrance showers etc). The pool was a bit small and chlorinated - I only mention this because I expected the spa water in the pool like (like in Bath's Thermae spa). Didn't get any treatments.

We had dinner in the Vellore restaurant, and had the côte de boeuf for two, carved at our table. It was delicious and the service was impeccable. Had a cocktail in the Colonnade bar afterwards, again nice but expensive at £12.50.

Breakfast was in the alfresco restaurant, we were the only ones in there which was odd because everyone else was in the Vellore and it wasn't full - we were directed to the alfresco place. But it has nicer views over the gardens. Breakfast was good, including tasty sausages (quite important).

Overall the staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel is beautiful but in my view, not the best value for money (especially the first room we were in) and I would only stay again if I got a cheap deal.

Just got back from 3 fantastic nights at this hotel. we absolutely loved our stay. The spa facilities were brilliant, everything u could want. Our favourite was relaxing in the outdoor heated jucuzzi/swimming pool, looking up at the stars at night, then going in the 2 different steam rooms and 2 different saunas followed by the ice room (which was an experience!) Breakfast was also a fantastic experience. The service was super they made you feel so special and the room is beautifully laid out. The standard breakfast is a mixture of fruit, cereals, selection of bread, meats and cheeses, toast and jams, crossants and 5 other pastries and muffins. You could order anything on the menu too from porridge, full english, scrambled egg and smoked salmon or eggs Benedict (for a £2.50 pp surcharge for each order.) We had both eggs Benedict and full English and both were beautiful and bug portions so well worth the surcharge.

The rooms are spacious, with a very comfy bed, mini bar, flat screen tv with lots of channels. There is free sparkling and still water provided in room for free along with biscuits abd tea/coffee making facilities. They provide robes and slippers too for u to use in the spa. We wore ours down over our swimsuits through the hotel and so did many others. No need to take shampoo, showergel or towels either as this all provided in the spa and bathrooms too (molton brown products!)

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with a fountain and landscaped gardens that could be appreciated even in the cold February weather. It was do peaceful and beautiful that we sat and read our books, listening to the birds singing. It must be beautiful in the summer! As you exit the hotel onto Sydney road you enter the sydney gardens which is a beautiful park which leads to town centre (about 10-15 mins walk, but beautiful walk) and the holbourne art museum (which is worth a visit - its free) or you can take a stroll along the canal and look at the narrow boats.

The Roman baths is definitely worth visiting. It's £12.25 pp entry. It takes approx 2hrs to walk round. You get a headset and can select the commentary as you walk around. Don't forget your camera though.

We ate out every night. The 1st night was at the yak yetti yak nepalese restaurant which was delicious and fab service and authentic. Not huge portions but very tasty and resonably priced. bit hard to find though, its downstairs along pierrepont street. The 2nd night we went for french at cote brassier in the milsom place, which had great atmosphere and food was delicious. 3rd night we webt to the strand Italian right by the Irwin cinema, which was ok, bit overpriced but we had a 2-4-1 offer so not too bad. Have a look at their website for offers. Nice atmosphere and service.

We did the hop on hop off bus tour which cost £12.50 each for a 45 min tour in total. You pick it up from by the weir, outside the garfunkles hotel. It's worth doing to get to see the surrounding area and hear about all the architect and history, but its a bit overpriced for a tour that u could walk around as its probably only a 2 mile round trip.

One last thing, if u have a car, the hotel do charge a 5pound a day charge to park there. I thought this a bit cheeky, but if u park in town it would cost u a lot more.

Enjoy your stay here. We r definitely returning and we would recommend this hotel highly for a romantic and relaxing getaway.

Absolutley lovely weekend break. Could not fault it. 5* service. Staff could not do enough to help. Lovely view over the city from our bedroom window. We had a dinner bed & breakfast deal, great value for money. Would not hesitate to stay there again.

I was very impressed with Macdonald Spa Hotel. Staff were excellent - nice, helpful and not overbearing. Drawing room, restaurant were great places just to sit and take it all in. Across the street was a great park to go for a walk in and town is just a few blocks away.
Rooms were nicely designed and the bedding was fabulous. Highly recommended!

From the phone call with the reservations manager, through to the reception at Reception, the staff in the spa and our own butler - everyone was amazing.

My advice to you is to spend a little extra and stay as good as you can afford, it's not everyday you have a butler. The spa is excellent, don't shy away from the ice treatment.

Only areas for improvement would be an improved bar area (lacks atmosphere) and a better stocked mini bar (complimentary but 2x beer, coke and juice is naff).

I stayed here for one night on business for a meeting the next day. I arrived in the dark when it was snowing. The signage for the hotel is good from the main roads and I found it easily- I have more trouble loading the car park as the hotel grounds were very poorly lit at night - but I go there in the end.
On arrival I was checked in very quickly and efficiently by a member of the front desk staff and was shown up to my room. The room was very nice indeed - a very large kingsize bed, excellent quality linen, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar etc. In fact everything you would expect from a good hotel - including Molten brown toiletries and bathrobes/slippers.
I arrived at 10.30pm and so was not able to access the restaurant and had to eat from the 24 hour room service menu which was very limited - so that was disappointing. I didn't use the spa facilities but am told they are very good.

What I did like
Awesome rooms with every home comfort you could want
Good food, although pricey was worth the money
Warm, friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you

What I didn't like
The walk from the hotel to the car park - although it is a short distance there is no path
The room I had looked out onto a flat roof, which was coverers in cigarette ends
The charge for parking
