“Don't stay here!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2010

If you are looking for luxury, don't bother staying here. We spent two nights in a tiny cramped room overlooking the terrace where people were enjoying themselves loudly while we were trying to sleep. And why shouldn't they? They were on holiday but a five star hotel should ensure that guests are not disturbed by installing double glazing as sound proofing. The room was very small and in need of fresh paint, there were no facilities such as DVD or CD players. The bathroom looked clean but on closer inspection was dusty in corners and the wood panneling stained with soap and water from previous residents. The tea and coffee tray contained an obviously battered milk sachet which was yellow and stinking when we opened it. Surely these basic things are easy enough to check?

Breakfast was very poor. Firstly it was only a continental breakfast as standard (a full English would cost you a further £6) but the actual standard of the food was bad. There was one type of fatty ham and some individual pre packs of rubbery cheddar. Croissants were cold and a little elderly, but the fruit was good. On our first morning, it took the waiting staff four requests before I was given soya milk, when it arrived, the jug was only large enough to be useful for one cup of tea. I had already explained that I wanted it for my cereal. Twenty five minutes after my first request for the milk, it arrived in the quantity needed. No apology. My partner had the same problem with dairy milk which did not seem to come as a matter of course whit the tea. Resultantly, the tea was cold by the time the milk arrived. Same problem with toast, I won't bother to elaborate.

On departure we were not asked if we enjoyed our stay nor was there an offer to take our bags out to the car although there were several porters hovering in the reception hall. On the whole staff were distant and not particularly helpful.

The good points: The hotel is situated about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Bath so there was no need to take the car and find parking. The spa was very nice and the spa staff more accommodating.

To summarise, we would not recommend this hotel.

Dear Janine083
Thank you for your comments. Delivering the highest standards of service for all our guests is at the heart of our core values and I would always welcome your feedback where you feel that this has not been the case.
I am sorry you had a disturbed nights sleep, I assure you that this is very unusual as we have frequent feedback from our guests who express surprise how quiet we are for a city centre hotel. The period bedroom you stayed in was in the original house dating from 1836, which is grade 1 listed therefore, unfortunately double glazing would not be allowed. We have a wide selection of room types at different rates and the room you had was commensurate with the room type booked and the minimum size is 21sq meters, which may I respectfully suggest is far from tiny
With regards to your breakfast complaint I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the experiences that you received whilst staying at with us. It is always our intention that our guests receive an enjoyable experience whilst dining. We are proud and passionate about our food and we only source the finest ingredients from sustainable resources and organics and free range where possible. I have passed your feedback on to our chef and suppliers to rectify the issue to ensure this does not happen again which include
It is a great shame that you did not feel it was appropriate to bring your concerns to our attention whilst you were still staying in the hotel as I would have liked to have had the chance of discussing your feedback with you and have the opportunity of rectifying the situation before you departed
Please be reassured that we have taken on board your feedback and hope to welcome you again soon.
Yours sincerely

You book 5 star you most certainly get it. Reception staff were friendly and polite. We were upgraded to an executive room on arrival. Rooms spotless, percale cotton sheets, toileteries in bathroom, towelling robes and slippers. We had a great view of Bath city. The breakfast was lovely, we were served quickly by smiley waiters. Couldn't fault a thing, can't wait to go again, well done to The Bath Spa Hotel you have got it spot on, SUPERB.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at this delightful hotel. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very special, having the Concierge offer to park our car, take all our luggage to our room and answer any questions we had upon arrival. We were blessed with hot weather for the duration of our stay and when lying on the outdoor sunbeds by the heated pool it actually felt like we were abroad not in England! We made good use of the spa facilities and on our 2nd day we both had spa treatments which we really enjoyed, followed by a v relaxing lie down in the relaxation room which included quiet background music, hot & cold drinks, scented candles and low lighting - we almost fell asleep! We ate out in Bath on our first night - Cafe Rouge - quick taxi ride which cost about £4 each way. The 2nd day we ate lunch in the Alfresco dining area which felt like a conservatory, with lovely sunny views of the terrace and gardens and having a relaxed feel. We then dined in the Vellore Restaurant and were most impressed with the service, with well-informed recommendations from the manager, to our bottle of wine being "decanted" into a carafe first we were very impressed - the food was amazing, esp the desserts. Coffee came with petit fours which were a nice surprise. We had breakfast in bed for both mornings and there was a good selection to choose from. Every member of staff around the hotel was so friendly and welcoming that we felt very special and thoroughly enjoyed the 5-star treatment. We would def return in the future but after we've saved some more pennies as 5-star luxury doesn't come cheap!!

We stayed in Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel at the beginning of August. As other reviewers said, the hotel is beautiful, the grounds are manicured and the rooms really classy: large and well appointed with luxurious sheets, marble baths, huge bath tubs and designer toiletries. The location of the hotel is close enough to the center of Bath to walk, yet feels secluded and quiet. Internet is free in your room if you bring your laptop. There is a charge if you use WiFi in the lobby. The pool and spa were nice, but not quite the same quality as the rest of the hotel. We had two dinners at the hotel's restaurant. The food was fine, but the service was very slow. As much as they tried to be helpful, they seemed to be overwhelmed by the dining room activity. It seems that the hotel had a lot of students from other countries who, although charming and helpful, lacked experience in dealing with guests. Another issue came up a month after our departure when it turned out that we were charged for our meal three times. When I called to reverse the charges, they cooperated, so I'm glad I caught the mistake. Overall, I would stay there again, just need to be aware that almost everyone is a trainee.

My boyfriend took me here for a surprise birthday treat earlier in the year and what a treat! As we walked the looooonnggg walk from the station with our bags we were pretty tired but as soon as we saw the hotel all our melancholic feelings soon disappeared. The gardens were beautiful as was the hotel itself and completely in keeping with the beauty of bath. We only stayed for one night but it was enough to relax us completely. The staff were so friendly as we arrived and didn't treat us any differently considering we were only 18. Similarly, our room was the first in the hotel which whilst it didn't have a view of anything in particular was located right next to the spa. The spa itself was fantastic and we even woke up early the next morning before we left to go. The restaurant was brilliant and the food divine! I noticed some people previously have complained about the price of breakfast and we decided not to have breakfast for this very reason. However, overall this was a 5 star experience and I would reccommend it to anyone looking for a mini-break away with their partner.
