“Disappointing”
Reviewed 28 September 2010

I took my husband here as a birthday treat, we are on a tight budget but I thought we deserved abit of a splurge having recently added to our family! Great location, sabout a 5 min nice walk into city centre.
The room was tired and dreary, not the cleanest I have been in. In fact, the travel lodges we usually stay in are usually much nicer! bed was huge and comfy though.
The spa was nice, and the outdoor pool lovely. Staff were, in the main friendly, however, in the spa treatment rooms (which were stunning) staff were not very helpful, we had to ask a few times in the 'relexation room' for water, and never did get any hot for a cuppa after our treatment!
The treatment itself was very poor, It did not last nearly as long as advertised, and the massage itself was really bad for both of us. I wasn't very happy as it was expensive.
The hotel grounds are lovely, the hotel itself beautiful, until you get into the rooms! I cannot comment on the food as it was out of our budget!
All in all a very disappointing waste of money.

Cannot fault anything with this hotel. The building and surrounding gardens are lovely. Our room, which was in a separate building was large, well furnished and very clean. All of the staff were extremely helpful and approachable. The gym, swimming pool and spa were excellent, just wish we had more time to enjoy them. Plan to make more time when we return, which I am pretty sure we will do.
We had continental breakfast which was enjoyable and provided plenty of choice. We did not eat in the restaurant as the hotel was close enough to walk in to the City.

We have paid £320 per night for one of the better rooms and this stay is definitely not worth what we paid (would have been ok at £150 or less)

What was good

+ Location and surroundings. Hotel is set in a wonderful, quiet garden, well maintained. From the outside the building looks imposing and impressive

+ Only 10-15 minute walk from the city centre

+ Good gym with fair amount of space and new equipment

What was bad

- Rather small and dull room - most certainly not what you would expect for £300+ per night

- Poorly run restaurant. We made a reservation for 20:30 (20min prior to that). When we arrived at the restaurant we were told that 'we need to be patient' and 'we are not quite sure when you will have a table'. When we complained the manager said that 'you will have a table in 15min' while we overheard the waiter telling her 'but this will clearly not happen'. We decided not to wait for the outcome and just used the room service

- Restaurant was also completely full the next morning. We had to camp at the alternative location. Buffet was rather low on food and staff was not managing to refill it. The hotel was clearly at full occupancy, however if your restaurant cannot manage to feed your guests at full occupancy you are probably not managing the capacity well enough (i.e. just try to add tables / staff and don't take reservations from the outside)

- Bizarre mini bar arrangements. The mini bar was completely empty. What you had next to it was a menu which offered 'bundles' of beverages / snacks from the room service! That's probably somebody's attempt to earn more money from the mini bar... We just didn't bother but not being able to have a bottle of water straight away when you wanted it was frustrating.

- Antiquated infrastructure. Elevators could soon be a prized asset for some elevator museum.

Overall felt like a hotel that used to be outstanding some time ago but is now poorly managed, overpriced and underinvested in.

Dear svaborg
Thank you for your comments. Delivering the highest standards of service for all our guests is at the heart of our core values and I would always welcome your feedback where you feel that this has not been the case.
I am pleased that you enjoyed the hotel grounds and thought the gym was good with fair amount of space and new equipment, which of course is complimentary to our guests and included in the room rate
With regards to your comments concerning your restaurant experience we have taken the following steps to rectify the issue to ensure this does not happen again which include staggering our bookings more to ensure guests who have booked a table do not have to wait and ensure those guests take priority over guests who have not booked in advance
with regards to breakfast we do advise all of our guests that Sunday breakfast' are extremely busy at certain peak times and to allow extra time if they are in a hurry
Our mini bar packages have proved to be extremely poular with our guests as they may preorder the beverages that they prefer to drink rather than have mini bars stocked with beverages that they do not want
It is a great shame that you did not feel it was appropriate to bring your concerns to our attention whilst you were still staying in the hotel as I would have liked to have had the chance of discussing your feedback with you and have the opportunity of rectifying the situation before you departed
Please be reassured that we have taken on board your feedback and hope to welcome you again soon
Kind regards
martin

Have just returned from a very short 1 night stay. The Hotel itself is beautiful and we were even upgraded! Cannot speak highly enough of the Staff, they are a credit to the Hotel from the front door staff, reception staff, coffee lounge and bar staff and also the fabulous breakfast and staff!
Included in our deal was a continental breakfast which was more than adequate. Very fresh fruit and good selection, fabulous cereals also so many different pastries And then the ham and cheese table! Amazing but if you did want a full English were surprised to see this was only £6.00 extra. Would definitely recommend this Hotel.

My wife took me to the Bath Spa Hotel for a special night out to experience the spa and to enjoy a nice meal on the occasion of a birthday. The room was good, beautiful bathroom and large double bed and the room had a fantastic view over Bath. The spa facilities were relaxing and we indulged in the hot tub, pool, sauna, steam room (we were not quite up to the ice room) and enjoyed sitting in the outside pool with the hot Jacuzzi bubbling away. We had a drink in the atmospheric bar before dinner and the bar staff were extremely attentive and welcoming. The menu had just changed apparently, there was a reasonable selection of fresh, locally sourced food and we had a very nice 3 course meal and enjoyed a lovely bottle of wine – my seat wobbled every time the staff walked past, which we found amusing initially. My advice – if possible take a table in the corner of the room away from the main thoroughfare. The tables for 2 tend to be along the wall overlooking a terrace – they are quite close together, which we found disconcerting in such a large space, although fortunately, we were only joined on one side before we finished.

Our room was exceptionally quiet and we slept very well, waking to the beautiful sights over Bath and the surrounding areas. The breakfast spread was not as described by other travellers – there was a generous spread of fresh fruits and juices and the meat and cheese platters were surrounded by cereals and fresh pastries. Yes some of the cheeses were wrapped, but these were cheeses such as creamy French cheese and German smoked cheese. Again, the staff were attentive; albeit, we were a bit bemused by the maitre dė asking us whether we were excited about having the breakfast…………….! We were not ‘excited’, been round the buoy a few too many times to get excited about breakfast, but we did enjoy the continental buffet and although others around us were ordering from the cooked menu, we would recommend the continental option, which was as much as we could manage after the previous nights meal.

Ok, there were some negatives – the receptionist on arrival was frosty and was far from welcoming and was equally cool when we had to clear up some confusion with a bill later. Still unresolved by morning, a brief discussion with the new receptionist resolved the problem quickly. Little things, but at dinner, the bread was late coming and the accompaniments for my starter also arrived well after I had started. Additionally, we had to remind the waiter after we had started the main course that we had ordered a vegetable side dish as there were no signs that we would have received it otherwise. This is supposed to be a 5* experience and the prices are of course definitely 5*. Some fine tuning perhaps, overall, good, but not the excellent we were hoping for. Would we stay again? Perhaps not overnight but we would try lunch on the terrace – that looked very nice!

Having had a disastrous stay at the Macdonald Savill Court hotel (see my review) we were a little wary as to how this hotel would compare. We needn't have worried - it was a case of chalk and cheese!!
The key thing here, I think, is that the staff are REALLY well trained - always with a greeting and the excellent staff in the bar and the uber-efficient Edmund in the restaurant always calling us by name is something that is such a small detail but is hugely appreciated.
The room was an "executive" room and while it was spacious was (as is mentioned by another reviewer) a little "tired". The bathroom, too, was spacious and well equipped (lovely heated towel rail) but also a bit tatty. These are purely cosmetic things which could be addressed with a minimum of decorating! It is supposed to be 5 star, after all.
The spa is heavenly with a good pool and a stupendous outside pool which is actually a giant hot tub with steamy water and bubbles - we sat out here in the rain and it was great!! The treatment rooms are lovely and tranquil and the thermal suite is superb with steam, sauna, ice room and mood showers - definitely worth a visit. I must mention that the prices in the spa are pretty steep (the exact same treatments using the exact same products are CONSIDERABLY cheaper in other Macdonald hotels).
The food was very good with breakfast being a mixture of buffet, for the cold items and waiter service for cooked items - so thankfully, none of that awful greasy mess that is the buffet breakfast!! We had dinner there on both nights and it was excellent with a good choice and attentive service.
I would certainly stay here again.

Good:
Went on honeymoon there and it felt special and romantic- just the sort of place for a relaxing break
Room was lovely and staff helpful and informative.
Was disappointed didn't get the room we selected for sentimental reasons but that was only because they upgraded us to a bigger one!
You can change in your room and go down to spa in a bathrobe.
Food was yummy.
Location is a pleasant stroll/short taxi ride into Bath.

Bad:
Minor grumbles- move the mirrors! no full length mirror in a place you could see and makeup mirror in bathroom was no use where it was located. Limited vegetarian options but great restaurants a stone's throw away. Was no room service menu so not sure if they still do this?

Ugly:
Massage in spa which was so bad I stopped the therapist mid way! She didn't even apologize and my feedback was not followed up. My husband's was fine so think it was bad luck but at those prices you expect trained staff.

Will not be returning to spa which is a shame as I had a list of treatments I wanted and had to go elsewhere, but hotel is still a winner. Pricey but good.
