It was a stone's throw from where we had rented a house. We walked by barely noticing the place until it rained and we scampered inside. What a lovely surprise. A really well maintained and thoughtful collection of portraits and silver wear. Like many English museums it is free which is always a bonus. The portrait gallery has a Reynolds and a couple of Gainsborough's. Who would have expected that? The Sydney Gardens surround the museum and are well worth a visit on their own. The museum has a café but we didn't try it. Lesson learned - don't walk past hidden gems, you never know what they might be hiding.

Nice grounds, and easy walk from the Pulteney Bridge or the Ayrlington Hotel. NIce layout with great collections of miniatures and tiny sculpture- many in lighted drawers which you could view by using the magnifying glasses provided.

Gave a concert with a male voice choir a while back in one of the gallery rooms, and the atmosphere and occasion were perfectly suited to create a memorable day.

This is a small museum with an eclectic collection. If it's still on, be sure to see the Tessa Farmer "Unwelcome Visitors" installation, which was wonderful and creepy.
