We ended up deciding short notice to stay in Bath overnight as a theatre show we were going to see at the Royal Theatre didn't finish until late, and it gave us a chance to return to Bath the following day for more shopping.

We initially tried to source a hotel by smartphone, but couldn't source anything so headed to the Tourist Information Office in Bath where they can book you a room direct with the hotel.

It turned out there was a special 'Jane Austen' weekend in Bath the weekend of our visit, and hotels were mostly fully booked. The prices of the rooms that were left were subsequently artificially elevated and we ended up paying £120 for a room that was usually listed on most websites at around £90.

The Bailbrook Lodge is about 1.5 miles out of Bath via the London Road (just over the roundabout crossing the A46/A4). Whilst the distance is short, journey times in and out of Bath at peak hours can exceed 30 minutes, so choose your timings carefully!

On arrival the Hotel looked decent, was located in a quiet area, and was surrounded by rolling green landscapes. Reception received us warmly and took us to our room which was located on the 2nd floor of the hotel. The staircases were winding and reasonably steep, and I didn't see any signs of a lift, so if you have difficulty getting up stairs it may be worth contacting the hotel first to see if they have any rooms on the lower floors.

Whilst we tend to stay in modern hotels in the main, the Bailbrook harks back to a more traditional era. It's more of a halfway house between a guest house and a hotel by today's standards, but retains a certain charm that's hard not to warm to. That said, they have updated rooms to include flatscreen TV's, tea and coffee making facilities (inc. cafetiere), and a clock radio with iPod/iPhone dock.

The room was compact, but comfortable and had an ensuite (shower / toilet). It was clean and airy enough once the windows were opened (no air con, but then not a requirement in England!). There isn't a safe in the room, but this wasn't an issue for us as we were only staying overnight.

Breakfast was good, with organic 'full english', and typical range of cereals / fruit juices / fruits. Our room was offered with Champagne breakfast, but given we decided to drive to Wales the next day it didn't seem appropriate to partake before driving a couple of hundred miles!

There is car parking outside the hotel, and seems to be linked to number of rooms so you shouldn't have issues parking. You can get back into the hotel later at night (reception closes at 10pm), but you need to access via a separate door with an electronic key code tag which will be on your room keyring.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, we were made to feel very welcome and had a comfortable stay. The only disappointment was the fact that prices seemed to have increased quite a bit over 'non event' weekends, but then that's not uncommon so was just an unfortunate side effect when trying to be spontaneous!

Room Tip: If you find steep winding staircases a challenge speak with the hotel about booking a room on a lower floor.

Nice hotel but really a B&B no restaurant & a limited bar, room was clean but a bit tired a little way out from the city but we knew that so it's a bus or taxi ride, to far to walk. The only thing that spoiled our stay was breakfast hit & miss if you get toast or not, even when asked for, service slow tables not cleared very quickly so people often had to wait to be seated .

Room Tip: Four poster rooms are larger

Thank you for your review of Bailbrook Lodge.

We are quality guest accomadation not a hotel. We offer a wide range of drinks from the bar to 10pm each night.

At breakfast we serve your tea/coffee and toast when we take your order. Breakfast on occasion can become very busy and I apologise that you had to wait longer than you should for your second order of toast.

We clear tables as quickly as possible and relay them with fresh tablecloths and provisions for the next guest. It it only on rare occasions that a guest may have to wait whilst we are doing this. We would not want a guest to sit at a table that was not freshly prepared.

Regards,

Justine Lewis

We stayed 3 nights at Bailbrook in a 4 poster room overlookung lovely garden. Room had all necessary expected amenities, including an in-room safe, ipod dock, dressing gowns & slippers.
But, no in room telephone which seemed odd.

Lovely old property full of character. Breakfasts were lovely and included champagne.

Only real downside, was fact because it is an old house, no lifts and so stairs only.

Ideal location if you brought your car. Free on site parking and conveniently situated to get inti Bath City and surrounding Cotswolds villages of Lacock and Castle Comb.

Stayed here for 2 nights.Very clean hotel the rooms were comfortable.Breakfast excellent and spoilt for choice.!! There was ample parking. All the staff were helpful and very pleasant. The location was about a 30 min walk into Bath itself, but did notice several buses pass by.Would consider returning here again and would recommend to others to try it.The only thing I would say is the decor needs a little tidy up in the rooms however it is a very old building and lovely character.!We did enjoy our stay.

Room Tip: 1st floor facing back, nice and quite

Our stay at Bailbrook was fantastic. Upon arrival we were given a tour golf the hotel and where to find everything. We were shown to our room which was a fantastic four poster looking out over the garden. The sink was in an odd place however the explanation that the building is listed made perfect sense and was understandable. Every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful. We were made to feel very welcome. All questions were answered that we had and plenty of information was provided. We were shown where we could catch a bus and which one to go into Bath but the weather was so nice we walked. Which brought back memories growing up at Bailbrook when visiting relatives. The breakfast in the morning was great and to order, a perfect start to the day. Again all staff went out of their way to help. I highly recommend people to stay here and enjoy the charm of the place. Even in the nice summer evenings sitting in the garden. My other half travels a lot in her job staying at 5 star hotels all over the world provided by her work. She said this was one of the best places she has stayed and was up there with the hotels.
