“THE perfect place to base yourself in Bath”
Reviewed 10 August 2012

We decided to make the most of the brief summer by heading to the historic spa town of Bath this August... but where to stay!?! not wanting a characterless chain hotel or the problem of finding parking it was a by utter chance we stumbled upon what must be baths most charming and ideal B&B, Villa Magdala is by far the most delightful place to stay in the whole of Bath!

We arrived after a rather hot drive from London to be greeted by the most welcoming and engaging of hostesses, whilst we checked in our bags were whisked away to our room to await our arrival. Unfortunately we had just missed the complementary afternoon tea but were invited to partake in the following days afternoon tea if we wished!!

The room was beautiful, spik and span and decorated in a muted yet contemporary style, there was an ample tea & coffee ray with fresh milk on request, a range of magazines and guides and digital radio/iphone charger. Most importantly the ensuite was beautiful!

After a lovely evening in Bath we had a good nights sleep followed by a mouth wateringly delicious breakfast with bucks fizz in the most delightful day room. The owner was floating around chatting to guests which showed a lovely sense of personal involvement.

If you are ever in Bath this is simply the most ideal place to stay

My partner and I, along with two friends have just enjoyed a wonderful two days in Bath and a night at Villa Magdala. Tastefuly decorated and very well cared for, this bed and breakfast is a great all round place to stay. We stayed in a "best" room and our friends in a "good" room - while they varied in size both were very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Perfectly located in a quiet area of the city centre, just a comfrotable 10 minute stroll into the heart of the city and everything very accessible on foot. Owners and staff very helpful and friendly and gave us some great advice on where to eat etc.
I can't see what more anyone would want for a place to stay in Bath, Villa Magdala is individual and charming and I am sure the breakfast will not dissappoint anyone, plenty of choice and all of it looked superb. Go ahead and book your stay, you will not regret it.

Room Tip: We saw an example of each room type - they all looked more than adequete and are beautifuly cared fo...

Thank you so much for such a great review. Our rooms do vary in size - we have three room types to reflect this - but all our rooms are refurbished to the same high standard as these guests noted.
Always happy to suggest restaurants, things to do etc.

Please do come back soon - we so enjoyed looking after you!

If there is a King of Bed and Breakfasts, this has to be a contender. Amazing service, great location, friendliest people you could meet, the best breakfast on our tour of England, fantastic rooms and showers.
First off, when we arrived a bit early, they prepared us a snack (A delicious slice of cake) which was very nice. The rooms are incredibly spacious and very clean. Breakfast was amazing. The best breakfast on our long 2 week trip. When you go to find your room, the architecture was most impressive, and provided a pleasant atmosphere. The hotel is also very close to the Thermae Spa, and the Roman Baths.
The employees were most helpful and very personable. If you are coming to Bath, this is the best B&B you will find, and it will most certainly meet your standards as it did our family's.

So pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Villa Magdala - we always try to have rooms ready as soon as possible as we know that some guests like to arrive early to spend every possible minute exploring this lovely city. And we are always happy to let early arrivals park in the car-park to avoid any hassles with parking.

Thank you for all your kind comments.

At our arrival we were three hours earlier than we had indicated at our booking. As parking in Bath is difficult and Villa Magdala was real close to the city centre, we decided to ask whether we could leave our car there and visiting the town on foot before checking in. Amanda welcomed us very warmly though we were much too early. She offered us lemon soda and a wonderful lemon cake and provided us with a map of the city. Our room was not very big, but spotlessly clean and it was tangible that every detail in this room was prepared with love. We were overwhelmed of the frankness of our host and of the lovely room. In the large breakfast room we met a wide range of whatever our heart desired. We chose the waffle and this was a real dream. What a pity that we could just stay for one night!

Thank you so much - having had such a disappointing review from another guest, your kind comments have given our lovely team a great boost! Guests are always welcome to arrive early and leave their cars - we know that there is so much to see and do in Bath that you won't want to waste a second! Glad you enjoyed the waffles too!

We do hope you come back soon!

I wouldn't recommend this hotel by any means. To start with, it's not a hotel, just a bed & breakfast. When you arrive there's nobody to help you with the luggage, which means you will have to climb 2 flights of stairs with your own suitcases up to your room. No fridge in the room, hope you don't feel like having something to drink at night. No personnel during night time, hope you don't need anything... And, the most unnaceptable of all, we couldn't have a hot shower during the 4 nights we stayed. We reported as soon as we arrived that the shower was not working and they told as that the previous guests had had the same problem so they would fix it inmediatly that same day. They didn't. We kindly told them the following morning that the hot shower was still not working. Oh, really? We will call the plumber and repair it inmediatly, was their answer... They didn't. We kept begging them during 4 DAYS that we would love to have a hot shower, PLEASE. We left the B&B without being able to have a proper shower. UNNACEPTABLE. When we did the check out, I talked to who seemed the manager to inform him about the problem we had had and his answer was: "Yes, we now the shower doesn't work, we will call the plumber today to try to get it fixed". No apologies, nothing... I really cannot recommend a place like this to anybody. Don't expect it to be a 5 five, or 4 star hotel, it's just a plain B&B horribly managed.

I would like to set the record straight and remind this guest, and others who may read this disappointing review, of some facts he seems to have omitted. A few days prior to his stay this guest contacted us via e-mail and requested the following ' A quiet room( prefer no neighbours on top or kids around). We would also like a big king size bed.' We responded that we would allocate him a room on the second floor, with a super-king size bed, so he would have no guests above him, so we are now rather perplexed why he was not happy to be two flights up. All guests are offered help with their luggage and I understand from the member of our staff on duty, that this was offered and declined.

It is obvious that this guest had not looked at our own web-site not the reviews on Trip Advisor or Booking.com as he would then have realised that we do not claim to be a five star hotel - we market opurselves as boutique Band B, with a five star Gold rating for our product and service from Visit England. We do not provide mini-bars in the bedroom but wine, beers, drinks with ice buckets, glasses etc are available to be brought to your room anytime between 7.00am and 9.00pm - all this is explained in the room folder - we also provide complimentary mineral water in each room. There is a member of staff on duty 24 hours a day - but we do ask that they are summonned for emegencies only after 9.00pm. This is clearly explained as guests check in to stay with us.

As for the plumber ...............on Friday morning , following the first night of this guest's stay, he reported that the temperature of the water coming from the shower was not sufficient. As the plumber was at the hotel that morning , we asked him to look at this. He did so and reported he could not find a problem with it - this is a reliable plumber that we use regularly so we had no reason to doubt him. On Saturday morning, the guest reported the same problem so we arranged for the plumber to come out as an emergency call-out. The guest was informed of this. The plumber arrived at 12.45 when most guests are out and about. The guest, who was in his room, said it was not convenient and that the plumber could not have access to the room. We twice requested that this work should be carried out and twice he refused. After 30 minutes of waiting the plumber left to complete another job in another hotel. He offered to come back on Sunday morning, but it had to be before 11.30 am - on Sunday the guests did not leave their room before this time so again we were unable to gain access to the room. Throughout this time, the guests were able to use the bath in the room where the water was of sufficient temperature. As we were fully booked throughout this guests stay we were unable to offer them an alternative room.

On checking out, when the guest spoke with John regarding this problem, we acknowledged that we were aware of it but that without access to the room it had not been possible to fix it - and that it would be done that day - and, of course, we apologised!

I am really sorry that these guests left so dis-satisfied - but the issues could have been so easily resolve, if we had been allowed access to the room.. Obviously this guest should have stayed in a five star hotel - albeit he would have paid three times the room rate. - where I'm sure he would have found a mini-bar in the room and 24 hour porterage.

I think what we find so disappointing is that this guest has given the impression that nothing was done and that we couldn't care less - nothing could be further from this! As other reviews show we care passionately that our guests enjoy their stay.

Every aspect about this place is amazing....from the beautiful decor to the polite and friendly staff. The breakfast is impeccable, I always say a good measure of somewhere is the quality of the bacon and it really was good (we have our own rare breed pigs at home, so we know our bacon!). It is very rare to find a place which has NO bad reviews, but this place is definitely the exception to the rule. I was also impressed how near to town Villa Magdala is, it is literally just at the end of the road, but the hotel is very quiet (except for the seagulls which cannot be helped....just bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper, but the morning chorus doesn't last long). The staff couldn't do enough for us and it was a lovely view out of our bedroom onto the gardens, and from the breakfast room which overlooks the parks and the stunnig architecture of surrounding grand houses. We had our wedding anniversary here and this place is throughly recommended for any occasion. We would like to thank the staff for their hospitality and attention to detail.

Thank you so much - we're so pleased you enjoyed your stay here. The location is just perfect for the city centre - and our car-park does remove lots of the hassle of trying to park in Bath! Seagulls - we don't have too much of a problem normally but apparently it is the breeding season now so they can be pretty vociferous - but it doesn't last too long, as you say! Normally they make for the centre of the city - more food I guess! But don't let that put anyone visiting Bath - it's a fabulous city!

Thank you again - and do come back soon!
