“What a Great Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2007

My wife and I stayed at the Oldfields Hotel last weekend, having booked it based on the Tripadvisor reviews. Once again, Tripadvisor came up trumps, because this is a great little hotel and an awesome discovery!

The staff are friendly and helpful, even coming out to meet us in the carpark when we arrived (although that may have had something to do with me blocking part of their admittedly small car park!) Our room was very light and spacious, helped considerably by the very high ceilings, and beautifully decorated. The hotel is an old Victorian town house and they've retained most of the original features in the rooms, such as the fireplaces, ceiling roses and decorative friezes at the tops of the walls. The bathroom was, like the rest of the room, spotlessly clean and had a nice powerful shower with complimentary Molton Brown products.

Our only minor criticisms would be that our toilet seemed to take forever to refill after each flush (hardly a disaster, but slightly irritating) and the use of sheets and blankets on the bed rather than a nice duvet. Personal choice, but I would have preferred it. Having said that, the bedding was again spotless and crisp, so I've got no complaints with the standard of what was provided.

Breakfast in the morning was also very impressive. The spread of cereals and fruit was slightly limited but would easily cater for most travellers and what was there looked good. We then opted for the full English and vegetarian breakfasts respectively, which were clearly cooked freshly to order and must easily rate as one of the best hotel breakfasts we've enjoyed for a very long time.

Basically, a little gem and I would heartily recommend it!!

We stayed at the Oldfields Hotel for one night and it was great. The manager(s) at the time (the owners were away) were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. The walk to town was about 15 minutes. We purchased a spa package and were provided with robes and slippers and other essentials, and had a great time at the Thermae spa in town. Highly recommend this hotel!

This was one of the best B&Bs we have stayed in the UK although it is probably best described as a boutique hotel. The service and attention we received upon arrival was amazing and the equal of any 5 star hotel.
The room was was spotlessly clean, well fitted out and tastefully furnished. The public rooms were lovely and the free internet access most useful.
Are only regret was that we stayed only one night.

We stayed for six nights during the last week of September and are pleased to report Oldfields is an excellent hotel! We occupied Room 7 which was very nicely decorated, good sized, and immaculately clean. The included breakfast was wonderful and the free internet connection was much appreciated. Our room and stay rivaled anything we've experienced in the US or abroad.

The former owners of the hotel, Rod and Alex, were filling in for two weeks. They were outstanding hosts-always helpful and friendly. They have an obvious and well deserved pride in Oldfields. We honestly hated to leave as we enjoyed our stay so much.

You will be equally pleased with this hotel, but one word of advice. Oldfields is popular, so book early.

  • Liked — Well decorated, quiet, and clean facilities.
  • Disliked — No complaints.

Oldfields is to date the best B&B we have stayed in. The ambience of the house is truly delightful. Beautiful rooms with great views and squeaky clean ! Nothing too much trouble for Rod & Alex the managers of the house. Free internet access and lots of leaflets was a boon. Breakfast was wonderful, of a very high standard and lots of choice. Cereals, fresh fruit followed by smoked salmon with scambled eggs and toast, who could ask for more !!! Cannot wait to return, wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you Rod & Alex.

From when we first arrived at the hotel to when we had to leave we had first class service and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel decor is lovely and our room was excellent. Breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs -extremely good. The spa package the hotel do is very good value the only advice I would give is that if you have the time to take the 4 hour package. 2 hours is just not long enough.
I would thoroughly recommend this B & B.

Listed as a Bed and Breakfast, but do not believe this, we would rate it better than many hotels we have stayed in . Oldfields is a great place to stay and we were made welcome from the moment we arrived to the time we checked out. The accommodation was clean and nicely contemporary and the breakfasts were a treat.
