This is NO way a five star hotel. Although we were greeted with a warm welcome and the rooms were clean and comfortable in our opinion it is no more than a guest house ! We were only there for two nights, our friends room which was the superior room located at the front of the hotel, found that there was a lot of traffic noise all night. The breakfast was ok apart from the little frozen potato things ! Unfortunately the second morning the small breakfast room became very busy, the cooked breakfasts were coming out whilst people were still eating their fruit and yoghurt, after being in there just 25 mins the waitress made reference to another couple that she was waiting for us to leave !!! We were unaware that we were being timed !!! We would not go back, it was over priced because it didn't offer the facility of an evening meal as you would expect a five star hotel to.

My husband and I spent a weekend at the Ayrlington this summer. Although not in the center of town, it's an easy walk everywhere and was on a pretty, tree-lined street. Our first room, on the lower level, smelled a bit musty, so we were immediately transferred upstairs to a larger, lovely room with a beautiful view of the grounds. Staff was friendly and helpful both behind the front desk and in the breakfast room. There is also a comfortable sitting room filled with magazines and guides to the area.

One caveat--don't stay here if you don't like or are allergic to cats. I found them incredibly friendly and they added to the homey feeling of the place, but I could definitely see this being a turnoff for non-enthusiasts.

Room Tip: Lower level room smelled a bit musty, so try to get an upper floor.

We stayed here after the Trip Advisor reviews. A really good B&B, excellent breakfast and really friendly staff. However you MUST pay the extra to have a room at the back of the hotel. The road noise is really disturbing at the front of the hotel (we asked to move after the first night) and for the extra £10 per a night we moved into the Garden Room which was really silent and much nicer. Overall, for a B&B and really good stay.

We stayed her for two nights in October. We met friends. The staff were very friendly. The room was tired and lights were on outside our window all night keeping us awake.
The breakfast was ok but smelled a bit of chinese cooking.

Got back from a 3 day city break this morning after a snowy few days in Bath. The Ayrlington is situated in a lovely location for a stroll into the city and yes there is a little road noise to the front of the building but surely that is to be expected, however it was not imposing. The staff were very friendly, the owners very accommodating, and the room was actually quite charming.
Breakfast was very edible and cooked to order, the rooms were warm and cosy and we had no issues with hot water or a lack of hospitality.
True this isn't really a hotel, but speaking to the owners they do not claim it to be, however it is a hospitable guest house which I would be more than happy to stay at again. We had the 'Bamboo' room which spans the depth of the house and was of a good size and serviced daily.

The Ayrlington is in a good location, less than a ten-minute walk from Bath's city centre. The grounds are lovely - a nice spot for a morning stroll. The breakfast was good and the dining staff were helpful and friendly.

On both mornings of our stay we had to shower with cold water. When we asked we were told that this was because the hot water had been used up and that we should wait for 15 minutes. We waited for 20-25 but the water was still freezing. Regardless, hot water should be available throughout the day and shouldn't be affected by other guests' consumption, especially for a hotel purporting to be 5 star. When we mentioned this to Audrey on reception as we were checking out she said that she would give us a discount. We were surprised when she offered us £8 off (from a total bill of £248), however we accepted this rather than getting into any discussion as to the value of the inconvenience, but suffice to say £8 is inadequate.

When we did have hot showers in the evening the room stayed steamed up for hours afterwards as the fan did not work.

The staff did not replenish shower gel, shampoo, etc for our second night's stay.

The bar is supposed to be open until 11pm. When I asked for two glasses of wine at 10.40pm, the receptionist asked me if I was taking them to my room or hoping to drink them in the bar, as she was in a hurry. Luckily, we wanted them in our room as we weren't getting the option to have them anywhere else!

Check-out is quite early, at 10.30am, so we requested a late check-out on our last day as our train was not until the afternoon. We agreed 12 noon with the receptionist but received a knock on our door at 10.40. Again, not a very relaxing experience.

WiFi was very poor in our room ('Poppy') and neither of our laptops, phones or iPad were able to connect.

The Ayrlington is most certainly not a 5 star hotel. As other reviewers have stated, it is very much a guesthouse feel.

Room Tip: Avoid 'Poppy'. It is extremely basic and the bathroom fan does not work. Cold water also an...

We had a fantastic time at the Ayrlington for New Years Eve. The staff were friendly, but our room (Victrorian) was probably the most wonderful thing about the stay. Cosy, warm, comfortable bed, excellent bathtub, cosy chairs to relax in...

The hotel is relatively quiet, occasionally you might hear the road or some other guests but it was always within reason and did not stop us from having two good nights' sleep. Breakfast is delicious, with a choice of Full English or Vegetarian, smoked salmon or even champagne breakfast. The continental options are plentiful as well, with pastries, cereals, fruits, yoghurts and cheese. Coffee was ok, tea delicious.

The drawing room is an excellent place to rest and read, especially with the fire on.

Its close proximity to the city center (5 min walk) is an added bonus. We would and will come back.
