“An enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

Stayed here in July. Very convenient for city centre, literally a 5 minute walk. All hotel staff were very polite and courteous. Have noted reviews which mention road noise at the front of the hotel, and having stayed at the back of the hotel facing the gardens I can say that there is no such problem on this side of the hotel, quite the opposite, it was very quiet and tranquil.

Check in to the hotel was pleasant, we arrived early but the Hotel was quite accommodating to our leaving the car in the car park. Our room was at the top of the house facing the road, the room was large and contained all that was needed for our stay.
The trouble with the room was that in facing the road, which is a busy main trunk road (the A36), sleeping was very disturbed, the windows being sash cord type were very difficult to open or close and the hotel should look at making some repairs to enable the windows to be closed, or opened, easier.
The breakfast was of good quality and plentiful with a choice of cereals, toast and a full cooked.
All of the staff that we had contact with were courteous and helpful and all in all we had an enjoyable stay apart from the problem of the traffic noise.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel and benefit with a view of the lovely gardens

We stayed here for one night in July and overall was a pretty good experience. The room was adequately sized, and comfortable enough. The room does not have air conditioning, so the windows were required to be open. Since they don't have screens on the windows, some flies came in. They may want to consider putting screens on the windows to prevent this. Although the room was very clean, it's showing it's age and could use a renovation - especially the bathroom where there was some black mold in the grout of the tiles in the bathtub (Rose room). Not a big deal, but perhaps management could address it. These were relatively minor issues that really didn't detract our pleasant stay.
The hotel is in a fairly good location - within walking distance to most things. Breakfast was very good. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and would stay here again.

I stayed here for one night with my brother in twin room carnation , it's on the back of the hotel , really quiet overlooking the garden which is maintained beautifully. Only a short walk to the centre . Audrey was lovely and ALL the staff extremely polite & welcoming . The building is stunning and parking outside always a positive. A lovely breakfast before we left , would definately return . I do wonder if the previous scathing review was meant for a totally different place as we certainly couldn't find anything to fault.

We stayed in a spacious room, appreciating having 2 comfortable chairs to sit in and watch evening TV in comfort, looking out to wonderful views to Bath centre. The bed was so comfortable that I had the 2 best nights' sleep that I have had for a year (I am not a good sleeper) and when we told the receptionist she told us that it was new. The gardens were beautifully well kept and we sat in them on both our evenings for a couple of hours enjoying the views with a glass of wine, very pleasant. The downside to the room was that the bathroom was shabby and the toilet needed a 'good clean'. There was plenty of drawer space but, as the furniture is old I would suggest that all the drawers need lining paper where there is none and replaced where there is some - I am rather fussy with my personal clothes. The nicely cooked breakfast was spoiled by either inferior or watered down fruit juice. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful and the public areas were spotlessly clean. We would easily stay here again as it is so convenient to leave the car parked safely and walk into Bath.

Room Tip: We chose a room at the back of the hotel after reading the reviews and we are so pleased that we did...

We stayed in Victoria room and it was so filthy with facilities belonging to 1800 century, horrible bed, depressing bathroom, noisy, and they did not even have Freeview!!!! and receptionist with racist attitude (say no more) when I asked if the water from the tap in bathroom was drinkable (since In London it is not) she said "where are you from? we are not in a third world country" I am Persian and have lived here for 32 years and have travelled around the world, more than I can say for her! she was so rude and condescending I wanted to tell her if you travelled more often you would know better. The price is too high and the building must be the ugliest one in that road. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. none accommodating although they say on their website to put your request in, they do not provide you with any, they don't even have a luggage room and left our suitcase in the breakfast room when they told us we could not check out late in spite of advertising that they have. EXTREMELY POOR. YUK YUK YUK

Room Tip: They do not have any!

OLDFIELDS_MANAGEMENT, Manager at The Ayrlington, responded to this review, 7 August 2014
Firstly, I am so glad that I am not the person who has tell Boris Johnson that it is not safe to drink the water in London hotels - good luck with that...

Filthy room? This room was checked by a senior staff member an hour before the guest checked in. If the guest had a genuine problem with the room and so many other issues, then why was no complaint made to management?

The television in the room does work and will show exactly the same Freeview channels as the other properties in Bath.

We are distressed by this guest's accusation of racism. On discussing this with the senior staff member (who is extremely well travelled) she thought that the guest was discussing water quality in a broader, international scope. No racism was intended or implied.

There appear to be a couple of lines missing near the end of the review and we deduce that they are on the subject of check-in and check-out times. Our check-in time is 14:00 with check-out at 10:30.
This guest arrived and expected to check in at 11:00. This was not possible so we offered to store her luggage whilst she continued on to Bath. Our available space for storage in the reception office is limited so, of necessity, we keep the "overspill" in the dining room. Luggage kept in the dining room is securely monitored both by reception staff and the CCTV system.

To be quite honest the entire management team are stunned by this person's review and can only wonder at the motivation behind it. The majority of our TripAdvisor reviews reflect a completely different story and provide us with valuable and effective feedback. This one is nothing more than a libellous rant from a traveller of supposedly 32 years experience who only now is making their first TripAdvisor review. WHY?

Recently stayed here to explore the delights of Bath & surrounding area. The Receptionist was friendly & welcoming & check in was effortless. The room we stayed in (SIena) is located on 1st floor of property, is spacious & tastefully decorated, only slight downside was the noise from the road outside but after a couple of nights it was not noticeable. Breakfast in morning was served in Dining Room, which overlooks the well kept gardens, The Ayrlington is approximately a ten minute walk from city centre & with the free parking the Hotel offers it makes it the ideal base to visit Bath & all it has to offer

Room Tip: Rooms at front of house are liable to be noisy due to busy road outside.
