We stayed at the Apsley House in mid-September, at the beginning of our trip throughout England. The place is just beautiful…from the lovely breakfast room and sitting room, to the elegant stairway and the tastefully furnished rooms. We stayed in the Salamanca Room, which required a two floor climb, but was bright, roomy and had great views of the garden. The room had a very comfy bed and a hilariously large modern bathroom with slipper tub and separate shower. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The full English breakfast was EXCELLENT.
The Apsley House is in a very nice neighborhood location, but it is quite a walk to downtown Bath. Even with a shortcut though the park, it was at least a 25 minute walk. We loved the place but wished it had been closer to town.

Room Tip: We loved the Salamanca Room, but all of the rooms looked lovely. We got to peek inside most of them...

This is great place. It is ran like a B&B. There is 12 rooms to stay in. We had room 6 at the very top looking out over the hills. There is one self contained suite. The breakfasts were excellent and a good variety of food and they would meet your dietry conditions. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and helpful. it was about a 40 minute walk into the city of Bath. A car would be recommended. We used the local taxi service which was good and it would cost 7.50 pounds for the ride into the city area. There is also the bus system that went by house that you could take. Dollar value was good. Would stay there again. The house itself was build for Lord Wellingdon and it was where his Mistress lived. A lot of history in Bath. Great place to visit.

Room Tip: We liked room 6 at the top of the house looking out onto the hill lands.

I booked Apsley House based on all the previous reviews and was not disappointed. My husband and I had the Mornington room for 2 nights and it was a good size, clean and had access to the garden. I would say the bed was a little lumpy and maybe a mattress change is needed, but the pillows were comfortable. The garden is beautiful. The bathroom was lovely with a good selection of Molton Brown products. No need to worry if you forget your shower gel, shampoo or conditioner as they have them all.

Another thing to note is that there is a school behind the hotel so if you are staying during the week expect to be woken up by screaming children early in the morning.

Breakfast was superb. As previously stated, the food was exceptional with nothing being too much trouble. They were happy to make anything to your requirements. I came down with a cold on our first night there and Raffael steamed me some milk even though the kitchen was closed and gave me a pot of honey and lemon for the morning. I added a brandy to the hot milk from the honour bar. The way the bar works is on complete trust, which coming from London is novel to me, you help yourself to a drink and write a little note with what you had and your room number and leave it on the bar. Wonderful!

A cab into town costs between £7 and £8. The bus is expensive, more than in London, £2.70 for a single journey.

What makes this hotel so special is the people that run it, David, Steff, Gillie and Raphael. They are fantastic. I left my PJ’s there by mistake and they posted them back to me at no extra cost, which I am very thankful for.

I would definitely recommend staying here.

Room Tip: from what I could tell all rooms are lovely

When We phoned to book this hotel we told by the manager a price of £90 per room for a double including breakfast . But when we phoned back to confirm numbers I was told they had nothing for this price and they had doubled the price per night . If that's the way they treat people I'm glad we did not stay here .

Dear Reviewer,

We are very sorry about your recent experience enquiring into staying at Apsley House.

There had in fact been an error on LateRooms and our rooms were not meant to be advertised at £90 per night (as you will probably know this is considerably less than the usual rate).

When you spoke to one of the Managers, and you pointed out that the rooms were on Late Rooms at £90, he had been willing to honour what was advertised. When you had called back later, and spoke to our receptionist, there had been more bookings made and those rooms on offer were no longer available.

We can only apologise for the confusion, but hope that you (as well as other people reading this) will understand that our manager acted fairly, and in fact, this is an unfortunate circumstance which in no way indicates that we do not treat people well.

We would be happy to welcome you here, and show to you we are fair and respectful.

Warm Regards,

Gillie

We stayed for two nights at the Apsley House and it was wonderful. The room was simple with plenty of room for luggage. Breakfast has a cold food bar and I had a wonderful porridge. My wife had the vegetarian English breakfast; she loved it. Eggs Benedict was the breakfast special. We stayed in room five (top floor) so carrying the luggage up was a little strenuous but not impossible. Overall, the staff was quite friendly and very helpful. They booked us two dinner reservations and taxi's. They also were very knowledgable about local sights and recommended a few museums to visit. We walked to town (20 min walk) and took the bus back. Very simple. Overall, we really loved staying at the Apsley House for its hospitality and it's unique character.

My wife and I stayed at the Apsley House on our recent tour of Britain, and can't say enough about how delightful the experience was. For starters, staying at the Duke of Wellington's summer place is special enough, but Gillie and Raphael, the friendly, cheerful, welcoming resident managers (not to mention chef, concierge, and bellman etc., etc.) made the visit entirely memorable. The home is furnished lavishly in excellent taste, and the garden setting and view are just beautiful. I can't imagine staying elsewhere.
