Owner description: Situated in a glorious Georgian manor house within 120 acres of wonderful grounds and stunning scenery, the American Museum in Britain is home to the finest collection of Americana outside of the United States. Visitors learn about the Founding Fathers, the pioneers West, Native Americans and the Slavery issue which lead to the Civil War in the new interactive American Heritage Exhibition. This precedes a series of attractive period rooms dating from colonial times until the eve of the Civil War. These rooms set the scene on domestic life throughout the exciting settlement and independence years of America and are accessible via a lift for those who have difficultly with the manor house stairs. The museum has an outstanding quilt collection which allows us to alter the permanent textile display from time to time (40-50 quilts are on show each year) and an inspiring Folk Art gallery intrigues visitors with whirligigs, cigar store Indians, weathervanes and even a Mohawk ship figurehead! Main season Mid-March to November, Tuesday -Sunday, 12-5pm. Cafe & Gardens open from 10.30am. Closed Mondays except during August and Bank Holidays. Christmas season Mid-November to Mid-December, Tuesday -Sunday, 12-4.30pm. Cafe open from 11am. Closed Mondays. Free shuttle bus from Bath city centre to the museum throughout afternoon, see website for schedule.

My husband is American so we found this place interesting. The staff are really helpful and happy to answer questions. We found the tavern really fun and had a go at all the games. It's probably better for adults and those with older children; our 5 year old got bored pretty quickly but we enjoyed it!

The only down sides were that it's tricky to get to if you don't have your own car. There is a little minibus that goes from Bath but it only has about 12 seats and gets busy. If you don't get on it's an hour's wait for another. It also took a long time to pay and get in.

We're very pleased that you enjoyed your visit enough to share your thoughts with others and to be candid enough for us to be aware of the not so perfect parts of your visit.
We are grateful to one of our supporters for funding the purchase of our Shuttle Bus which allows us to assist visitors in getting to us. This free service has been very popular and we do try to do 'bounce-runs' when we are not able to accommodate everyone on our 14-seater bus; this is traffic dependent however as we try not to be late for the scheduled timetable.
It is unfortunate that you had a delay to purchase your ticket. As you saw, there is only one till in Reception and we do try to process sales as quickly as possible even by having a second member of staff on hand to assist with questions and directions as soon as the transaction has gone through so that the Receptionist can look after the next visitor without futher delay. Maybe this is the plus side of the Shuttle Bus only having 14 seats! We thank you for your patience and are pleased that you enjoyed the games in the Tavern and our corps of volunteers looked after you well. Maybe you'll borrow one of our new family backpacks next time to entertain your children through the Museum; available from Reception and have been received very well since their recent launch.

“Worth a visit”

Probably best to call in on the way for a day in Bath so allow about 3 hours (at least that amount of time if you're a Kaffe Fassett fan).

The history of American is presented in a folksy way so the museum works well without getting boring. Make sure you see the small garden area at the side.

As noted by others the coffee shop could do with a bit more buzz.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others, we're pleased that you liked our collection & gardens and advocated as much time as possible to visit with us. Our 12noon-5pm hours allow everyone a very full afternoon and superb views of the area especially at this time of year!

“Lovely house exhibition, Kaffe Fassett a bonus”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2014

This museum is in one of the most picturesque locations - the house and gardens are beautifully kept and worthy of a visit themselves. Items on display were interesting and varied - there was sufficient information but not an overload which suited us. The Kaffe Fassett exhibition was a small but explosive experience of colour - lots of practical insight and glorious items on display. Wonderful. A combined ticket price made the day out very good value. The shops are small, tastefully equipped and not over-priced. However, we had to return the mouldy chunk of bread served with our soup and this was replaced by a hastily defrosted white sliced offering which did not enhance the experience!! Apparently, excess bread is disposed of daily. Our visit was Tuesday so there was no excuse for stale products. The offer of a
complimentary coffee would have been appreciated but the range home made cookies was wide and delicious.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and sharing how much you enjoyed your visit. Our Catering Manager was horrified to learn of your experience in the cafe and is looking into the situation. The Director wishes you to know that this area of the museum is constantly under review due to the numbers who use the cafe; training in customer service included for occasions such as you experienced - although it should not have occurred in the first place.
The fact that all other aspects of your visit were enjoyable, memorable and full of colour please us very much. The Kaffe Fassett exhibition has been a great success and people are spreading the word for others to come before it ends on 2 November. Thank you for visiting and we hope to welcome you again on a future date.
