Owner description: Beckford's Tower is now closed for the winter, reopening on 5 March 2016. The elegant, golden-topped neo-classical tower on Lansdown Hill was built by Henry Goodridge in 1827 as a retreat for the brilliant writer and eccentric William Beckford. Born to great wealth and endowed with precocious talent Beckford created magnificent buildings in which to store his extraordinary art, furniture and book collections. Today the tower houses a museum dedicated to Beckford. The magnificent spiral staircase sweeps up to the Belvedere with its ornately gilded lantern affording breath-taking views over Bath and the surrounding countryside. At the foot of the tower is the Victorian cemetery, once part of Beckford’s pleasure garden, where both he and Goodridge lie buried. “Worth the trip”
Reviewed 23 September 2012

No trouble parking - you may be the only visitor!
A unique edifice by a very very wealthy English nutter. At one time was maybe Britain's number one on the wealth table.
Despite his collapsing abbey etc., his tower still stands.
An unpublisied gem

“Good end to a long walk”
Reviewed 15 September 2012

It was a superb day when we eventually arrived at Beckford's Tower after our walk up from Bath across the fields at the back. The gold flake dome on the top shone brightly in the sun. Well worth the walk up inside and visit to the small museum

“Beckford's Tower: a hidden gem”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

Beckford's Tower really is a wonderful museum on the outskirts of Bath, set on top of Lansdown Hill and overlooking the city. It has the most amazing 360 degree views across Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and into Wales from the very top of the tower. It is unique, as it is the only museum in the world dedicated to William Beckford, who was one of the wealthiest men in the country in the 18th/19th centuries: a profligate consumer of beautiful things, and a novelist of repute. The museum contains many wonderful items that have been tracked down and returned over the years that were specially commissioned by Beckford for the Tower. Not for those who can't climb stairs.

“Beckfords tower wonderful views, intersting building”
Reviewed 12 May 2012

A small museum, the tower has an intersting history and is well presented. The best thing are the fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Only limited numbers are allowed up so you have plenty of space and comfort to enjoy the views which makes for a relaxed visit. Well organised and unusual.
