My mother and I took a Mad Max tour on November 16, 2006. We took the all-day excursion to see Castle Combe, Avebury, Lacock, and Stonehenge. Overall, it was a great trip though we did have a couple of passengers that were always 10 to 20 minutes late at each sight when it was time to move on. Because of this I estimate we had about 20 minutes less at Stonehenge at the end of the day than we should have.
The tours are small and are led by one guide who drives a small van/bus. Our guide Charles was wonderful and extremely patient with his passengers.
However, I would warn anyone who takes this tour - at least in the month of November - that you need more than "sensible shoes" that the Mad Max guides recommend. What they didn't tell us was that at Avebury your every step (and I do NOT exaggerate) will be in sheep droppings. You also need to be careful not to slip and fall (one of the girls on our trip did slip onto her back while walking at Avebury). Most probably, you will be the only tourists there at Avebury- it is a beautiful spot - but you want to be forewarned to wear shoes or hiking boots that you don't mind being covered completely in you know what.
We had one of best meals of our entire 2 week trip in South East England at the George Inn while in Lacock Village. Charles told us this pub was usually much busier and that we were lucky to get seated so quickly, but if you can fit it in, I encourage you to have your lunch here.
In all, the Mad Max tour was a nice laid-back excursion which covered some wonderful sights and we were given personalized and interesting commentary from our guide. If you have a day to spare while around the Bath area, I highly recommend taking this tour.
