Beware of bookings "not being written down" and having to be found alternative accommodation. My daughter booked this for us as a treat but it wasn't noted, allegedly. The cheque was cashed however, and on complaining, the bank details were taken to give a refund but they took another £60 instead of refunding. My daughter has been phoning daily to try and get this sorted but just gets passed from pillar to post and now 3 months has elapsed. Police now involved. BEWARE.

this is quite a nice place - we visited over the bank holiday weekend and stayed 2 nights - its close to the town center so we weren't too tired to come back to the hotel after a long day sightseeing!

we were charged £60 for a double ensuite and 30 for a single ensuite - while we thought the bathrooms were on the smaller side and the single room faced the road so there was some noise from the street, we couldn't complain about the room or facilities - its quite adequate for the price. the cooked breakfast was fresh and tasty.

we were welcomed and made to feel at home and although we lost the parking permitt they provided us - we were given a new one at no extra chage - which was very nice of them!

only suggestion would be to improve the booking service as i had to book over the phone and didnt get any confirmation till i asked for an email for the same...but it was a plesant stay and i will definatley recommend it for anyone on a budget holiday.

I booked a double room and have given my card details to them. The price they agrred was 50 but later they asked for 60 per night... Didn't even want to argue with them. Totally waste of time. The reservation system is crap and there is no professionalism!

We were referred here by another local B&B because it had en suite rooms available and was rated as a four star. All seemed OK on arrival - the manager was friendly and the room was clean, but quite shabby - stained carpet, scuffed paintwork etc. When we returned after dinner that night we noticed the front door had been left on the latch and no-one was around. The following morning at 8.30am the dining room was locked and still no-one was around, although the door had once again been left on the latch so anyone could wander in. There was still no-one around at 9.00am - I even answered the front door when the bell rang and let the laundry man in myself. We went outside to get something from the car, pulled the door shut behind us as we had a key, and then couldn't get back in - we met another guest outside the front door, who smelled very strongly of alcohol, and who said she lived there - so I'm guessing this B&B is partly occupied by DSS tenants - she said the staff never got up for breakfast and she wouldn't choose to stay there herself! For 10 minutes we rang the doorbell and phoned the B&B - eventually the manager answered - he had clearly just got out of bed - he said someone else was supposed to be doing the breakfasts and just walked off without apologising. We just packed up and left as we didn't want to leave our stuff unsupervised in the room. A complete nightmare!

On the 3rd of June, I phoned Ashgrove Guest House and booked two double rooms at £55 each for the night of the 13th of June. On the 13th in the afternoon, I phoned Ashgrove Guest House to confirm what time the rooms would be free and found out that Ashgrove Guest House had not written down my booking and there were no rooms available. Ashgrove Guest House offered to find alternative accommodation at the same price in another guesthouse. Two minutes later Ashgrove Guest House phoned back saying that the only available rooms were at Travel Lodge at £90 each. NOT IMPRESSED!

Ashgrove Bed and Breakfast is a delightful and welcoming place to stay. I was greeted by the manager as I arrived and found him to be a charming and welcoming young man and without fuss or bother he showed us up to our room where the interior was beautiful.

On my first night I had an issue with another guest (an elderly woman), who was complaining about her neighbours who were relatively quiet compared to herself. She chose to shout at them at the top of her lungs in the early hours of the morning (5AM precisely), though this is not a management-related issue. The manager remained calm despite the uproar.

The second night was a peaceful one even though the traffic noise was loud but me and my partner enjoyed a quiet night listening to cars go by.

I would recommend this place to young people because the breakfast was lovely the staff were friendly.

The Ashgrove would not, however be appropriate for old and disabled people due to many floors and lots of stairs.

  • Liked — The breakfast!
  • Disliked — The TV areal was temporamental which disrupted viewing.

Stayed for weekend in April. Great location with free on street parking nearby (IF you can find a space....) Very helpful staff and pleasant interior - clean and well kept with mad suit of armour in the breakfast room.

The breakfast was tasty, there was lots of it and the service was quick and efficient. The room itself was comfortable, well decorated and light, though the sink was tiny.

Unfortunately the walls are paper-thin, and therefore any noise (and there was LOTS of it....) outside your room, from the main road outside,or in other rooms may well keep you awake, especially if other guests are inconsiderate.

The television reception was very poor, and our shower fitting was broken and couldn't be fixed during our stay.

Also, make sure that you confirm exactly what your room rate is on booking, to avoid further awkward negotiation on checking out. What we paid was reasonable. What they tried to get us to pay (in my opinion) wasn't.

I probably wouldn't stay here again, but this is mainly due to the behaviour of other guests in the B+B and not a fault of the staff.
Give it a go and see what you think - hopefully you'll get lucky and not have to share the place with a chav convention.

  • Disliked — Thin walls, other inconsiderate chav guests.
