We read lots of flattering Trip Advisor reviews before we booked a couple of nights at the Stags Head Inn. It was on these grounds that I'm adding an additional flattering review. We stayed in Room 3, a tastefully appointed and spacious room. Warm hospitality, great food and we were made to feel very welcome by the owner-managers of the pub. The staff were excellent and we were quite sorry to be leaving after only a couple of nights. The fish pie was the best I've eaten (and I eat a lot of fish pie) and the breakfasts were amongst the best I've had too. I would have no hesitation recommending the Stags Head Inn to anyone (including my mother!). If you book and stay there, I'm confident that you won't regret it. Well done everyone there. Dunster is a little gem of a small town / village too. Go see Dunster Castle, take a drive across Exmoor and end the day with a cream tea in Dunster and you'll have a great day out.

Room Tip: Room 3 has the largest bed...

What a gem, we have just returned after spending four lovely nights at the Stags Head, on arrival we received a warm welcome and were shown upto our spotlessly clean comfortable room, although bitterly cold our room was warm and welcoming, we booked a table for our evening meal and this set the pattern for the rest of the stay, the food was so beautifully cooked we decided to eat in every night. The menu was varied and interesting, you can always tell a good restaurant when the locals also eat there. The staff were so attentive and friendly and are a real asset to Mike and Bernice who always had time to stop and chat and make sure everything was spot on and that we were enjoying our stay and thank you for the special little touches that made our wedding anniversary really special. We look forward to repeating this holiday a.s.a.p. Thank you, Dave & Pam Stevens.

Room Tip: All the rooms were lovely.

After living together for many years we decided to get wed in Williton, which is 6 miles up the road from Dunster. We read the reviews for the Stags Head and booked this for our first night of wedded bliss. We booked tables for lunch and the evening, our witnesses were to join us for the lunch meal.

Because we had a longish drive and there were no changing facilities at the register office I called Bernice, the landlady, and asked if we could change there before going back to the ceremony.

On our arrival we were a bit pushed for time, Bernice showed us to our lovely room with the minimum of fuss and came back a few moments later with 2 large glasses of wine and a dish of chocolates and strawberries wishing us well for the ceremony. We were parked outside on the wrong side of the road for the time of day, so she kept watch on the car to avoid a visit from the traffic warden!

After the ceremony we came back to our reserved table all laid out with sprinkles and other wedding bits and pieces.

We had starters and mains, My wife and one of the witnesses had a Venison and juniper stew, of which I had a bit of a taster. It was delicious. I had a chicken dish that was equally lovely.

There were quite a few other diners who all seemed to be enjoying themselves too.

In the evening we went back down to the bar where a table for 2 right beside the fire was laid out. Michael, the landlord, had gone out in the afternoon and sourced a "just married" balloon which was tied to our water jug. A nice touch!

It was as well that we had booked as the place was jumping. Every Friday night they host the "friday club" where a good number of local businessmen and women come for a social chat and a pint with nibbles provided by the hosts.

We were still full from lunchtime so Kate had a starter and I had a pudding - the Toffee apple one, it's fantastic.

Elsewhere all the tables were full of diners of all sorts of ages, family groups and couples.
Our table by the fire was just the job, it had been a very cold day, with a biting wind and we were glad to warm up.

I noticed that despite the fact that the pub was very busy the waiting staff had time to stop and chat, even though food was delivered very quickly and no-one seemed to be kept waiting.

We asked Ellie the waitress how long she had worked there and was very surprised when she said 8 years, barely looking old enough to have been there all that time. Ringo the barman / waiter has been there a similar length of time too.

It says a lot if you can keep good staff for a long time, and its obvious that they like working there.

Our room was fabulous, and the bed very comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very special.

Breakfast was excellent with a wide range of choices.

We will definitely be heading back this way again soon.

Thank you for making our wedding day special...

Only had a meal there - did not stay. The pub was virtually empty when we arrived shortly after midday but filled up quite rapidly with locals and visitors alike. Always a good sign I think. There was a log fire burning and the dining room was very welcoming. The menu was very English with some local produce listed, once again, great to see. Husband and mother in law had beef with mushrooms in brandy sauce - that was delicious. Great portions. I had meat balls in pesto sauce. They were really tasty. Shame I did not have the option of spaghetti to go with them rather than chips. Side salad was a bit of a downer, shredded iceberg lettuce, raw onion and peppers with dressing on the side. I left it as it just did not look that great to me. It was quite a large side salad and may have pleased quite a few people (sorry, I am being picky!). The bar could do with stocking some local ales. The wine list was ok. Husband had apple and bread butter pudding served with custard. That was yummy! Service was great, very friendly. One to go to if you are in Dunster.

We stayed here on the 27th and the 28th of January. It was just as we had experienced before. The rooms were clean, tidy and inviting. There were tea and coffee making facilities provided, with biscuits. The evening food downstairs in the main lounge was excellent. It was fully booked for food on a Monday night ! I had lamb koftas and very nice they were too. One of our party had the venison pie, which was also enjoyed. My choice of ice cream was local clotted cream ice cream of which there was a choice of flavours.
,Weve been here a few times now and have eaten our way through the menu. We have never been disappointed. We have stayed in 3 different rooms and have always enjoyed our stay This is a listed building and has interesting features. All in all, most enjoyable weekend break.
