“This is going to save a lot of travelling!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2013

Having lived in South Devon for some years before moving to West Somerset we have enjoyed the owners two other hotels in Dartmouth and Totnes. Although we had heard that the Luttrell Arms had changed hands we were not sure who had bought it for a few weeks so it was with delight that we discovered that it someone we knew by sight, and whose hotels we already loved and knew.

I suppose when you have two giant white dogs it is to be expected that you will find even a few places that claim to be dog friendly can be a little sensitive, even if it is only because of the space that the dogs take up. There has not been a hint of that in the Castle, The Seven Stars, or now, here.

We wandered in last Tuesday, really to suss out which public rooms were dog accessible, and ended up staying for curry night! It was a good decision, choice of 3 home-made curries, eat as much as you want for £8.99, a good range of soft drinks, including varieties that we do not often see in West Somerset and very attentive staff. Water appeared for our dogs without request, and the owner, who happened to be up from Dartmouth had a quick word, not intrusive, just right.

Can't wait to see what other events will be hosted here when they get fully organised.

My husband and I popped in on 11th July for an impromptu meal at the end of our holiday in Alcombe. A lovely summer evening walk took us to the village, and we thought we would give the hotel a try. The setting was just amazing, as we had the dog with us we sat outside in a peaceful and picturesque garden. The food was excellent - the best we've had on this trip, and the service so friendly and welcoming. We didn't realise they were having a 'Fawlty Towers' night, and were surprised to bump into Manuel, Polly, Basil and Sybil while being given a quick tour of the hotel following a general enquiry at reception. We will definitely be returning! The rooms look fab also.

Thanks for your kind remarks and we are glad we helped make your holiday a success. Sometimes it's hard to work out where the real Fawlty Towers finishes and the actors began, but the people attending the dinner loved it!! And obviously you survived the event!! My Father is often referred to as Basil but mainly by his wife. Many thanks once again.

We went to this historical pub for lunch and sat in the 'secret garden' which had delightful views of the castle. The food was delicious, if a little pricey, with a good selection on offer. Unfortunately we waited an hour for our food as our order was misplaced, but we were compensated with a free round of drinks and Mandy the lovely waitress was very apologetic. All in all I would recommend stopping here for lunch!

As we had not taken a long weekend for sometime and loving the Royal Castle Hotel at Dartmouth we thought we would check out the Way Family's latest aquisition. What a fantastic building - steeped in history. Dunster is a very beautiful village but does have very limited free street parking - however the village carpark is literally just a stones throw away. Although the hotel has little frontage the period arched doorways lead into the most amazing characterful arrangement of bars, a small inner courtyard and a beautiful dining room. A large charming 'secret' garden is accessed via a flight of steps.
Our room was number 15 - a large room with a large oak, very comfy 4 poster bed. The en suite was also large and some may say - needs updating - but we thought the presence of a bidet quite quirky!
The housekeeping is first class and one evening a beautifully made up z bed was provided for our young grandaughter who wanted to stay a night with us.
We did feel more work is needed in the kitchen as althought breakfasting was good, other meals both bar and restaurant were inconsistant in quality and presentation. The waiting staff, however were brilliant whatever request or situation came their way. A more positive management style would have been an asset.
On the whole - with its wood fires, genuine old worlde charm, it's open welcome for dogs and friendly atmosphere I think the Ways have a winner. One thing though, if you have mobility problems the secret garden may not be accessible for you.

Hi thanks for the kind review and glad to hear you like us and our hotels As the representative of the Way family on the ground I get to respond to all the trip advisors. The Luttrell Arms we all believe has the potential to be our flagship it’s a great character building that will be great in the winter and the summer
But you're right Mum and dad do seem to buy hotels without parking, or limited parking here we have Parking passes to allow free parking in the car park on the steep and then walk back up over the corner of the deer park, there is also talk that this winter there may be a small underground car park and Spa!!
That’s if we make any money this summer !!!
As regards food and service we are investing in building a good kitchen and front of house team we are adding two new managers front of house soon( this week !!) but this all takes time , possibly you could e mail me and let me know the issues with “ the need for a more positive management style would have been an asset” if you prefer please e mail Dad nigel@royalcastle.co.uk
But thanks again for a kind response and hope to see you soon
Becca way the managment and staff

Excellent well balanced menu, tempting selection of seasonal products. Interesting food combinations, the figs with blue cheese and raspberries worked really well. Delightful staff, excellent service, backed up by a professional kitchen brigade who delivered hot food with precision timing.
We dined in the restaurant, but you can dine pretty much anywhere, very relaxed welcoming atmosphere.
Very good prices, starters around £5 to £6, mains around £10 to £15, we expected the bill to be more very pleased with our evening. We will return.

Room Tip: Dine in the restaurant, its bright airy and the window open too! So if you need a breath of fresh a...

Thank you very much for your kind remarks and the nice things you said about the restaurant.
It is good value for money and nice to treat yourselves. We do a celebration special on a Sunday at even better value which includes a chocolate heart and prosecco in your room on arrival and bed and breakfast all for only £90 for two people on a Sunday night!

We have stayed here for many years. We like atmosphere, comfort, good simple food with quality ingredients, good and friendly service and we like to take our dogs. None of this has been taken away by the new owners. In fact, they have found enhancements where we originally felt none were needed. Spruced up furnishings, the gardens have been expanded and re-arranged. Dogs were just as welcome as before. The ability to now eat outside in the gardens is a welcome development, although eating in the bar as before is still just as good. Good to see some of the previous staff are still there; and new ones coming along. And, most importantly for me, there are still teapots in the rooms! And it was good to have a table outside our room (Room 10) where we could sit in the evening. Clearly they have more developments to come but, so far, so very good.

Room Tip: Choose room 10 if you have dogs as immediate access to the outside from your own door. There are oth...

Stayed in room 30. Nothing flash but very comfortable. Clean, nice bathroom, very hot bath! No wifi in the room, patchy in the public rooms but I believe they are improving this. We really stayed because of the fabulous, very English bar. Great food, lots of real ales and a log fire, in June! Loved it.

Thank you for your kind response we have just finished the installation of a hard wired broad band WiFi for all the rooms, this will not only resolve the WiFi issue but change the TV into a computer with a selection of games and access to the internet. This and the role out of high speed broadband should resolve all our problems!! Sorry about the need for fires in June. As an aside we have just installed ten new Hypnos beds for improved sleep quality...as used by the queen!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Luttrell Arms is a 3 star, 28 room hotel. Set in the medieval village of Dunster with its many interesting buildings, under the shadow of the Castle and within the Exmoor National Park. The privately owned 14th century Luttrell Arms is surrounded by beautiful countryside making it the ideal destination for that weekend break or midweek getaway. Stroll around the village, walk the moor, or just sit by a log fire in a building where hospitality has been a way of life for hundreds of years. Heritage "If you could bottle the air in the bar at the Luttrell Arms and sell it you'd clean up" so wrote a local journalist. The smell of logs burning on the fire, a hint of hops from the pints of ale, add to this the smell of something aromatic being cooked in the kitchen, and the most essential element - the smell of history, it oozes out of the walls which have stood for 800 years. There are many outstanding architectural features, the medieval hall with its hammer beam roof (room 17) and twelve light window. History seeps out of the blackened frames, which had their glass rattled loose as Cromwell’s gunners laid siege to Dunster Castle from a defended strong point at the end of the garden. Cromwell’s Commander, Col. Robert Blake walked the corridors of the hotel, it was then called the Ship Inn and was used as his headquarters throughout the siege of the castle. Also of note is some very fine plasterwork on the ceiling of the lounge downstairs, and the plaster over mantle in room 12, showing Actaeon being devoured by hounds. The Arms of Luttrell that we use today carry us back to a Gentleman of 1261, the crest takes us only back to 1621, but the supporters are directly derived from one of the Barons who coerced King John into sealing Magna Carta. A more modern visitor is Hercule Poirot. In "The Cornish Mystery" he confronts the murderer in one of the hotel’s bedrooms. ... more   less
