“Short Break in Dunster”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2014

We booked a superior room for a couple of nights before returning back to the dreaded work at the Luttrell. We have been here previously to stay and to the bar / restaurant. All the Christmas decor was still up and it looked absolutely brilliant - like stepping back in time to Christmas - loads of character and old world charm. This is the first time we have visited since it was taken over and the improvements are visible. The buzz is back in the place and the improvements to decor etc are welcome. We had a garden room which was handy as we brought our dog and the room was spacious , airy and retained the luttrell look so all good. We ate in the bar and the restaurant. Bar meal was taken in the main bar next to the huge hearth - good bar food and beers plus that bar is so atmospheric. The restaurant is smarly decorated and the three courses we had were great - only grumble was that there was no main fish course but a small grumble.. We got a deal from them at £80.00 per night for the room with breakfast for both of us as part of their january deal..all i can say is BARGAIN ! - we have booked to go back at the end of the month

Room Tip: the four posters rooms are great and if you can ask for dunkery beacon room

Back to reality with a bang - Have just spent a fantastic Christmas break (8 days in fact) at the Luttrell and cannot recommend it enough. From beginning to end it was an absolute pleasure -Our sincere thanks to Becca and all her staff - everyone was only too pleased to help you in any way they could. Staying with us was our West Highland Terrier, Pebbles, and we were not in any way treated like 'second class citizens' as in a lot of so called 'dog friendly' hotels on the contrary we were truely welcomed. The bedroom and bathroom were of a very high standard and size and immaculately clean. Will definitely be back in the Summer. Thank you all.

Room Tip: Dog owners - We booked room 10 which has a stable door onto a private terrace - ideal as we would op...

Just returned from a four day stay at the Lutteral and had a great time in spite of some awful weather. The hotel has been updated with style and comfort, the bar always the heart of the hotel is cosy and full of atmosphere.
We used the resturant twice during our stay and both nights the food was good with a wide selection.
Staff both efficient and friendly.

Impressed from the moment we stepped into the hotel. A very warm reception set the tone for the stay. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. The room (overlooking the Yarn Market) was spacious, well decorated and very clean. The bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed a couple of undisturbed nights sleep. The bar area was charming - log fires, great choice of beers and a varied bar menu. The food quality was great and the service was fantastic - again impressive as the bar area was very busy. Breakfast was outstanding - and all hot food was cooked to order. So overall the hotel offered great value - especially with the very generous January discounts - it would be difficult to find a better hotel than this - and its a great base for exploring Exmoor.

Room Tip: We went for room with a queen size double bed - very spacious.

First time visitors to The Luttrell and weren't disappointed. Overall it was a very nice experience. They had a wedding the night we went so were shown into the Boardroom. A little weary but it was nicely decorated and felt like a restaurant room. Didn't have a starter but were given a nice selection of breads to choose from. The mains were very nicely cooked although the only down side of the evening was the steaks were a little bit grizzly, so best make a point if that's what you order. The ladies had a lovely fish dish with Linguini. Desserts were nicely done and again a nice touch was that one of our party required custard, and although not on the menu, not any bother for them to do.
Considering it was extremely busy , what with a packed bar area, a wedding and a full restaurant we were very pleased with the food, service and atmosphere. Passed through bar area on our way out with its 'nooks and crannies' , looked ideal for socializing with pub grub and a few jars.

This old hotel has a wonderful atmosphere due to its great antiquity. It can get very full indeed at holiday times. Soup of the day was very nice but served in a very small portion and lukewarm: making it poor value. Their menu as a whole is very pricey.

Went in here because it was dog friendly. Lovely decor. Paid at the bar for a tea, a coffee & a scone & jam. Then had a 20 minute wait. In the end I had to go up to the bar and ask them if there was a problem. Our order then duly arrived.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Luttrell Arms is a 3 star, 28 room hotel. Set in the medieval village of Dunster with its many interesting buildings, under the shadow of the Castle and within the Exmoor National Park. The privately owned 14th century Luttrell Arms is surrounded by beautiful countryside making it the ideal destination for that weekend break or midweek getaway. Stroll around the village, walk the moor, or just sit by a log fire in a building where hospitality has been a way of life for hundreds of years. Heritage "If you could bottle the air in the bar at the Luttrell Arms and sell it you'd clean up" so wrote a local journalist. The smell of logs burning on the fire, a hint of hops from the pints of ale, add to this the smell of something aromatic being cooked in the kitchen, and the most essential element - the smell of history, it oozes out of the walls which have stood for 800 years. There are many outstanding architectural features, the medieval hall with its hammer beam roof (room 17) and twelve light window. History seeps out of the blackened frames, which had their glass rattled loose as Cromwell’s gunners laid siege to Dunster Castle from a defended strong point at the end of the garden. Cromwell’s Commander, Col. Robert Blake walked the corridors of the hotel, it was then called the Ship Inn and was used as his headquarters throughout the siege of the castle. Also of note is some very fine plasterwork on the ceiling of the lounge downstairs, and the plaster over mantle in room 12, showing Actaeon being devoured by hounds. The Arms of Luttrell that we use today carry us back to a Gentleman of 1261, the crest takes us only back to 1621, but the supporters are directly derived from one of the Barons who coerced King John into sealing Magna Carta. A more modern visitor is Hercule Poirot. In "The Cornish Mystery" he confronts the murderer in one of the hotel’s bedrooms. ... more   less
