The location is great, the staff fantastic and the food delicious. An interesting place that would benefit from a good bit of redecorating and carpet cleaning. Staying here could be a lot more pleasant if it didn't look so tired!
The room we were in had no hot water in the handbasin, and at £130 a night that is unacceptable.

Room Tip: Room 16 had no hot water in the handbasin, but a lovely view

I have stayed at the Yarn Market for a week every August for about the last ten years as a member of the Music Week. It is not a conventional hotel, as it is a number of old houses joined together by a maze of corridors and staircases, some narrow and quite steep. I have often had (by choice) a room on the second floor, facing the courtyard, as it is quiet and comfortable, with a double bed for my single use. I like a bath, so the lack of a fixed shower is not a problem. The main strength of the hotel is its staff, who could not be more friendly and helpful. The owner is a real character, always smiling, and nothing is too much trouble. As this is a course, we stay on a full board basis. Breakfast is a buffet, and perfectly adequate (if there was a problem with the sausages, it seems to have been solved!). The evening meal was very good, with some unusual dishes, though I could have done with a wider choice of potatoes. Parking can be a problem, but I have always managed to park just a few minutes away. I couldn't give it five stars, but four are very well merited.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter.

We were staying at the Yarn Market Hotel for 2 nights over the weekend for a wedding. The positives first - Dunster is a beautiful old village, the hotel is perfectly placed for exploring and parking is free. We had a room on the 2nd floor which the receptionist had to show us to directly as the hotel is a bit of a maze. They do have handy signs on the doors that point you in the right direction. It's worth noting that the hotel doesn't have lifts so carrying heavy luggage up its narrow staircases can be quite challenging. Our double room was decorated a bit like grandmas house with floral bedspreads and curtains (but suited to our old fashioned country surroundings) and was of average size with a small en-suite bathroom with shower, small sink and toilet. I thought that the bathroom was a bit on the small side but this is not the same for all rooms as I found when visiting a friend's room (they had a large bath tub, as well as shower and a large mirror). The room was generally clean and tidy and they provided us with tea/coffee making facilities, tv and alarm clock. The main thing that isn't provided in the room is a phone, which would be really useful as the mobile phone signal in the area is quite poor. There isn't an iron in the room either, but a shared one is provided in the hallway. Breakfast is provided in the room rate which is buffet style with full english, cereal, fruit, tea/coffee & juices.

My top tip is to remember to lock your room door as you leave. Rooms are accessed by actual keys (not keycards as in more modern hotels) so the door does not lock automatically when you leave, you need to use the key to lock it. We found this out after coming back from dinner to find our door unlocked, luckily nothing was missing.

Overall I might have rated this hotel more highly if it had not been for the price. We had a special rate as part of a large wedding group but even with this discount I still think the hotel is overpriced. If I were staying in the village again I would probably give one of the other hotels a try.

I am sorry but mobile phone coverage on some networks is very weak over much of Exmoor.

We recommend Orange as the best network and we keep a stock of orange mobiles for free loan to our guests..

We had a superior room overlooking the yarn market. It was beautifully clean and well furnished with easy chairs and table in the window where one can relax and watch the world go by. The staff were friendly and efficient at all times. Definitely worth a visit.

It would seem that over the years he has bought three imposing and adjacent terrace houses on the main street of the pleasantly old fashioned village of Dunster. The first house contains the hotel reception and the resident lounge; the restaurant and bar is in the second house with rooms upstairs and the third houses the remaining rooms. To get from one to another one needs to go outside.
Once one gets used to this, the delights of the hotel start to impress. Our bedroom was spacious with nice furnishings although the en-suite was a mite too small. The hotel atmosphere was decidedly friendly and the staff were most attentive and helpful. Choosing one's dinner at breakfast time resulted in a splendidly cooked and tasteful repast in the evening.
Having said all that; when I compare the Yarm Market with the modern decor and facilities of chain hotels I came away with the thought that perhaps value-for-money was borderline, particularly the food and wine. But, unlike the chain hotels, The Yarm Market has an atmosphere which is amiable, warm and affectionate and totally matches the charm of Dunster - it's worth it.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the house with the bar/restaurant !

We had a two night stay in The Yarn Market Hotel in June. We were given room 6, a large, well furnished room overlooking the Yarn Market building and the main street. The room was clean, fresh and tidy as indeed was the rest of the hotel. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Everything in the hotel seems to have been well thought out with nice touches including the loan of a mobile phone if needed. There’s a drying room/boot room, a cycle shed and cycle cleaning facilities, even a puncture repair outfit for those guests keen on outdoor pursuits. The hotel has negotiated a two-for-one deal with National Trust for guests visiting Dunster Castle. The “Guest Information” folder is a mine of useful information about the hotel and attractions in the surrounding area,

The hotel doesn’t have its own car park and parking is a bit of a lottery. We were lucky to find parking in the market square but in any case, the hotel provides free parking vouchers in the public car park around the corner.

We ate in the restaurant both evenings. The menu wasn’t particularly exciting but the food was well cooked and enjoyable. The meals weren’t cheap but there are other places to eat in Dunster and we’d have tried these had we been staying longer.

The breakfasts were really good. I stuck to fruit, cereals, orange juice etc. But my wife had a cooked breakfast one morning and agrees with other reviewers’ comments about the sausages!

Dunster itself is a lovely village, dominated by the castle. We spent a full day visiting the castle and exploring the village, all on foot and no need to use the car. Most of the shops are aimed at tourists but there are the usual convenience stores, supermarkets and filling stations in Minehead a couple of miles away by car.

The Yarn Market Hotel doesn’t have a bar, although wine and bottled local beers are available to diners. For those guests like me, who enjoy a good pint, I’d recommend The Luttrell Arms across the road (take a look at their Secret garden too), or The Stags Head Inn which also has a popular restaurant for locals and visitors.

Room Tip: Try and get a room overlooking the Yarn Market.
