“The best Bob we have ever stayed in ... anywhere”
Reviewed 25 July 2014 via mobile

Have just spent two nights in the Allerford room at Spears Cross and have to say we have never been so well looked after. Cliff and Tricia are truly outstanding hosts, whose attention to detail is unbeatable. From the tea and cake on arrival, to
the G&Ts before going out for supper; from the turn down service complete with local chocolates to the detailing of local produce providers from where the excellent breakfast ingredients come from ... I could go on but want to leave a few surprises for future guests! Cliff and Tricia met our every need whilst being unobtrusive - never have I felt so reflexed in someone else's home outside of my own family. I would recommend Speats Cross to anyone planning a stay in Dunster who appreciates warm hospitality, excellent local produce and the charm and character only experienced in a property built in 1460!

This place came on high recommendation 'TripAdvisor' no less! It more than lived up to it's reputation Cliff and Tricia went out of their way to ensure our stay was just perfect. The accommodation was superbly clean and spacious with contemporary furnishings. Guest rooms again sufficient and welcoming with out feeling overcrowded.
Cliff gave good advice for local amenities and tourist sites, restaurants etc and gave us complimentary pre dinner drinks appearing most knowledgeable in the that industry. He was also a dab hand at moving the cars around when there was a full house.
Breakfast had plenty of uncomplicated variety, the smoked trout and poached egg went down a treat, a good alternative to the ready available 'Full English' and fresh fruit to start always a sign of quality.
Would certainly recommend to others and excellent for it's situation. Just opposite the church with bells that played tunes every 5 hours plus a Westminster chime.

Room Tip: A local lady said the panelled room was the best.

Reading the current reviews I find I can only echo the plaudits.
The hosts Cliff and Tricia gave us a great welcome with tea and cake in the garden and drinks before dinner at a local restaurant.
The room was delightful and the breakfast, from local produce including Dunstar bread, outstanding.

We stayed at Spears Cross for a long weekend to explore Dunster and Minehead. We were certainly not disappointed! Dunster itself was lovely, the castle was interesting and it was made all the better by the welcoming, warm and incredibly attentive attitudes of our hosts. The breakfasts were excellent and we were even told of the place that they acquire their rare lime tree breakfast honey from! All in all a delightful weekend with lovely people!

We were in the Porlock room in this beautifully renovated 1460 building in the historic town of Dunster. Everything about the place has lineage and heritage, from the building to the Marsala thoughtfully left for the snifter before bed. Great locally sourced breakfast, a cold beer and warm cuppa for tired travelers, a hand up the stairs with the cases and lots of local knowledge.
Everything about this place hums with care and thought, and Cliff and Trish really are the best at this sort of thing. Friendly and welcoming without being obtrusive, flexible and accommodating in every area.
As a bonus, walk out the front door, turn left and about 15 meters away is the Stags Head pub with great meals, ales and locals! And you can do a few great circuit walks from the front door to take in Dunster Castle, the Deer Park, Britain's tallest tree and a few red deer.
We wanted to stay longer.
Good people and venues deserve glowing reviews. I hope this is one.

Stayed with my children (11 & 14) and parents for 4 nights over half term and had just the best time. Cliff & Trisha were so wonderfully helpful and accommodating making suggestions as to what we should do in the day and restaurant suggestions in the town for the evenings. The rooms are luxurious, clean and have lots of little extras like fresh fruit, biscuits and wide selection of teas/coffees for you to make in the room. The house is full of character and history and in the most wonderful location within walking distance of the castle and high street. The breakfasts were undoubtably the highlight of the day, fabulous selection in the charming dining room, everything freshly cooked and locally sourced. My daughter declared the cheese omelette "the best ever!" It was a very relaxing but busy few days and we have all fallen in love with Dunster and Exmoor so hope to return soon!
