“Nice stay”
Reviewed 17 January 2014 via mobile

We arrived on a Saturday evening and could park on the street outside the hotel although there were restrictions midweek. There were no problems checking in and the staff were friendly. The room itself was ensuite and had loads of character.

The location is central and is in walking distance of restaurants and pubs. We didn't have an evening meal there but the breakfast was spot on.

The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is because the bed was very uncomfortable with the springs poking me in the back all night.

On arrival we were booked in by the bar man ,and given our keys and tv remote.Ours was a second floor room. Too warm inside, with only roof tops as a view. The room was basic and the furniture was well worn. The big chest of draws was in pieces. The bath side panel kept blowing out.
The extensive ground floor bars were cosy with lots of atmosphere . But the locals/regulars were a bit on the edgey side. As we did not feel comfortable we declined to eat or drink there. We did however go down for breakfast which was between 8.0am and 9.0am. It was adequate and included in the price .This could be a highly rated hotel given its 14th century origins , but is crying out for some major renovations/love and attention .

Nice pub but food is overpriced for what you get.maybe this is just in summer months for tourists but there are much better eating venues in Glastonbury.Lovely olde world looking pub from outside but does not really give it credit inside.

We went to have a meal because our American friends insisted on eating in a 'real English pub.' Well the food is pub food all right, and very standard stuff.
My meat has been cooked hours ago so it was dried out and smothered with brown paint. Vegetables very overdone.

The prices are a disgrace, the same as in a proper restaurant but you have to order at the bar a long way away, and pay in advance. Our friends were all right on Guinness but if you don't want alcohol forget it as we were offered orange juice or orange juice.

It was noisy and lively so bare hard walls and hard floors meant the noise bounced around and echoed unpleasantly. Best to sit facing outwards and watch the people. I sat facing a completely bare wall which was fascinating.

Substandard and rip off.

During our 4 day stay in Glastonbury, we spent some time at the bar & restaurant. Senior special lunch on Wednesdays is a must if you qualify. Great pub atmosphere in the restaurant & bar areas which is supposed to be haunted. King Henry VIII sat there & watched the Abbey burn.....so who knows? There is a tunnel from the Abbey (and maybe the Tor) to the hotel and a hidey hole near the bar for the escaping priests.

We visited this hotel expecting a lot more for the £95 per night we paid! The room was a four poster, but with no handles on the wardrobe, handles missing from a chest of draws and burn marks on the carpet, the room was NOT worth the price, maybe a great service would have made up for this, but as the management are (to use the words of a local patron) 'only in it for the money' this was lacking from them to say the least. When checking in it was explained that there are no staff are not on site over night and we where given a number to call in case of emergency, this is fine, however, no phone in the room? It should not be assumed that every guest has a mobile with them.
The rest of the staff where pleasant and helpful and the room was clean enough, just far too over priced. Breakfast was good and cooked fresh to order so no complaints on that score (we did not eat in the bar so I cannot comment on other meals).
The bar area is lovey but spoiled by the attitude and service, of who I assumed are the proprietors, they just don't seem to like people and did not smile once, you can't make customers feel as though you don't want them there when you take their money!
It is a real shame as this lovey old hotel has great potential, if only it was cared about enough. The rooms could be made a lot better (cheap white plastic curtain rods on show is not a good look for a place with this history). We have stayed nicer rooms for less cost, and would not return here.
Visit Glastonbury yes, it's great place, but stay somewhere else.
