“Hitting the Mattress”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

I will try to walk the line between the good and bad reviews..The locations is fine..the outside looks like an eighteenth century coaching inn..which it probably was..Parking is a problem..there is none outside the front of the building..baggage has to be unloaded rather sharpish and once complete the driver has to circle the town to get around the back of the pub and park in one of three spaces allocated..if they are full..you have to pay..

The mattresses have entered realms of urban legends..there are many words to describe said mattresses..but we will settle for "unusual"..and for any honeymooners who are making plans to stop there I do warn you to forget about s*x..those mattresses are knee cap breakers.you have been warned.. The carpet in our room had seen better days..(this is a very large understatement).....Breakfast is of the English variety ..all fried..no fruit yoghurt etc..
There is no safe..Safes are very important..Safes are where passports etc are put when guest leave for the day.Not all guests are British..Losing/having a passport stolen guarantees major problems for the victim
There pub itself has a nice ambience and locals and visitors appeared to rub along with each other ..the choice of food is limited ..but if you take a short walk up the street you will come across a fair number of different cafe's/restaurants..

The George and Pilgrims has great unused potential.. but major improvements are required..

The mattresses would be a good place to start..

Room Tip: A silent prayer may help..I have my doubts ..but it's worth a try I suppose..

Our four poster room exceeded expectations! The photos on their website don't do the hotel justice. It is in the centre of glastonbury. A perfect location for exploring the town. After a night in the local pubs and a couple in the george, we couldnt have asked for a better breaskfast, the following morning. All staff very friendly and can't wait to return

We stayed here for 2 nights in March. The room was for 3 and was good size. The bathroom was clean and modernized. Unfortunately, the mattresses are HORRIBLE. As other reviews have stated the mattresses are worn with the springs sticking you all night long. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was good. Upgrade the beds and I would have given this hotel 4 stars.

Considering the location and the price of £95 I was extremely disappointed with this place. For the price I would have expected a boutique style hotel instead it was a shabby pub with even shabbier rooms. If you tastes include mismatched brown furniture covered in dust, stained carpets, tiny TV, grubby bathroom with pre-used soaps and collections of cobwebs and dead arachnids/insects clinging to every window along with a bed with a mattress approx. 2" thick with polyester sheets and pre-war army blanket then please book!

The only redeeming feature is that it was located where we needed to be.

If you love a la carte and mega luxury this isn't for you. If you love history, it is.
The magic of the building is great. The restaurant has tasteful art painted on the walls and the old and creaking furniture is where the owners have been sympathetic with its surroundings. Would it have the same feel with modern furniture, carpets, curtains? I think not.

The staff were friendly and helpful and to me it was a wonderful stay. Lovely English breakfast and the food, even though basic, are large portions and tasty. The location in the high street couldn't better, you are in the hub without much noise (we stayed in early April). Take the George and Pilgrim for what it is: a beautiful building withholding such history in every nook and cranny. A great place to stay and feel the atmosphere of Glastonbury breathing in its walls. 5 stars are for a wonderful experience.

I have been reading some of the reviews slagging off the place.I ate here last July,on a friends recommendation, and could not fault the food or the service.Yes the place was very busy and we waited twenty minutes for our food, but I think that is about average these days. And the place has a wonderful atmosphere.

This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in.
The four poster room was shabby. Holes in the carpet, stains all over the walls, the curtains hanging off their rails and some of the drawers useless as the handles had come off.
At £150.00 per night it is vastly overpriced, maybe £20.00 per night would reflect the correct value of this terrible, run down establishment.
Shame on Relaxinnz, I dread to think what overseas tourists make of it.

Room Tip: Pick a room in another hotel!
