“Somehow you felt unwelcomed....”
Reviewed 29 June 2011

First of all, the House is great. Situated beautifully beneath the Tor of Glastonbury within easy reach - only climbing over the fence at the rear of the garden (careful, barbwire) and nearly already at the top!

Having been booked into the "Dove Room" we were looking at the grounds as stated on the webpage. The Room itself was clean (but cobwebbs covering the edges of the Room), the en-suite bathroom is spacious and fairly new with great shower facilities.

Staying at the B&B just after the famous Glastonbury Festival we anticipated Somerset inconvinience. As we gave our approximatly arrival time the owner seemed quite astounded to find us at her Home. We were then shown to the breakfastroom (1 Big Table for all guests) and nearly forgotten.

The breakfast was served at said table, no menus or nicely set up Table present. The Food was cooked to the liking and fresh locally produkts have eben used.
After serving the Food the owner closed the door and you fehlt somehow shut off and unwelcomed.

I'm somewhat surprised by previous reviews, we found our stay comfortable with a warm welcome. There was no issue with noisy children (even though it was half term) hard beds or anything else for that matter. A geat place to stay and we will return

The hosts have a real issue with service thus making your stay uncomfortable. The children in the house do not provide a relaxed atmosphere and you feel as though you are staying in a spare room. Very similar to a previous review I read.

The room was not cleaned properly twice (as we changed rooms) and the hosts made as feel like we were putting them out when we asked for it to be cleaned.

The breakfast was fine, but not willing to accommodate any special requests.

The check out time at 10:30 am is far too early, esp. at 80 quid a night and breakfast finishes too early as well.

Basically, you got the feeling they are in it for the cash, and nothing else, which just made the stay really uncomfortable.

I'm normally pretty fair with my reviews (have completed over 40) and don't sweat this small stuff but this was not a good stay, really uncomfortable.

Stayed twice now over two years, and found the hosts most friendly and the rooms up to a high standard and beds comfortable. Each room different and both were lovely and quiet with no road traffic. Bathrooms were very spacious and so clean that they look as if they are brand new. Lots of toiletries available - if you forgotten your own. Plenty of tea, coffee and milk and sugar & biscuits in room. Takes 15 minutes to walk into the Abbey. Freshly cooked breakfasts taken on a large table with other guests overlooking the front garden.

Although the grounds and much of the house was lovely, the room itself was very disappointing. The furniture was antiquated, the bed hard, uncomfortable and very high to climb on to. It certainly could have been cleaner, and the junk in the wardrobes etc made it feel as if you were in someone's spare room. The bathroom was really nice and very modern. At breakfast, ther was no menu, it was a case of 'what do you want?' Would never go back, I'm afraid. Website pictures a bit misleading.

We enjoyed our June 2009 stay at Melrose House immensely. Everyone, from the extended family to other guests, was pleasant and genuine. Sarah Oliver’s parents passed by, noticed a new car in the large half circle driveway, and proceeded to welcome us and settle us in the Dove Cote room. A short while later, the Olivers returned home, warmly welcomed us, and provided suggestions for our stay. The Georgian House is inviting, immaculate, old fashioned and comfortable, but modern where it counts. The en suite was roomy, with a large, double bed that was sheer pleasure to sink into (not too hard and not too soft for the back, either). The en suite included the amenities of a hotel (bottled water, tea, coffee, snacks, magazines, maps, hair dryer, bath items, etc.). The bathroom was equal to our five star hotel in London, from the warm towel rack, unending hot water with great water pressure, and large, thick, soft towels. They offered us breakfasts with a wide variety of hot and cold choices, fresh local produce, and generous portions. The other B&B guests we met at breakfast were interesting and fun, from various areas of the E.U. The property is private and quiet, with a dove cote and garden. The Tor begins on the other side of the Melrose House fence. A short walk (less than 10 minutes to High Street) includes passing the Chalice Well and the Abbey Ruins. We were apprehensive to stay at a B&B, but were rewarded with comfort, quiet, and warm cordiality, without a loss of privacy.

The room was luxurious, modern and clean. The bathroom was fantastic - great power showers! Plenty of hot water. Beds were very comfortable, so mattresses must have been changed! Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice.
Host very helpful and welcoming. The situation of the B&B was great for walking up The Tor as there's access from the rear of the garden. It was also only a short stroll into town.
I would most definitely stay there again!
