“Beautiful gardens even on a damp day; great for reflection / prayer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2014

Extensive gardens that are well kept and interesting. There is a garden of reflection which would be nice to sit in on a sunny day so take a Bible.
The chapel was also a place to reflect.
The palace is a bit of a let down and can be viewed in about 10-15 mins so no need to rush the gardens.

Thank you for your review - we will be sure to share your compliments of the garden with our hard-working gardening team! They do a great job.

You'll be pleased to know we are working on long-term plans for the interior of the Palace to better share it's rich history and varied use throughout the centuries with our visitors, so watch this space.

At the moment we are busy behind-the-scenes transforming the Panelled Room into an additional large exhibition space for Created in Somerset, our major exhibition this year that showcases over 80 fascinating objects, artefacts and even old Somerset hymns (opens end of May). This is our biggest exhibition inside to date, so we hope it will keep people interested and entertained for a good while during their visit.

Hope you can visit us again one day,
Sarah

“Interesting site at the heart of Wells”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

The heart of Wells is literally situated in the garden of the Palace (several natural springs). For me the palace is at its best from the garden with magnificient views on the cathedral. The palace itself a bit of a flop but with a guided tour it will be more interesting.

Hello.

Thanks for your review. We're pleased you enjoyed the gardens and the surrounding lovely views.

We're working on long-term plans for the interior of the Palace to better share it's rich history and varied use throughout the centuries.

At the start of this year we made some big changes in the Long Gallery, double-hanging 25 portraits of former Bishops of Bath & Wells in chronological order (matching the timeline in the Guide Book), moving furniture around to make it look more 'lived-in' and are currently busy behind-the-scenes transforming the Panelled Room into an additional large exhibition space for Created in Somerset, our major exhibition this year that showcases over 80 objects and artefacts found in parishes across Somerset (opens end of May).

Until the end of May, 2014 we have also got a jazz photography exhibition on display within the palace, featuring some big names such as Dizzy Gillespie, Jools Holland and Ella Fitzgerald. Not to be missed!

Hope you can visit again one day to enjoy new developments.

“Stunning!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

I visited Bishops Palace Wells for the first time on Friday, I didn't know what to expect but I was blown away! Everything from the gardening to the loos were well kept and clean and tidy, it wasn't too busy so didn't feel over crowded. We didn't visit the cafe because there were no tables, not a bad thing but it looked lovely, shame we couldn't try the coffee!
the staff in the shop were apologetic when we needed a refund because they charged us too much to go in, but our overall experience was very pleasant and relaxing. Just perfect for a day out with my parents!
Really was mesmerised by the wells too, fascinating! And I loved the cathedral peeping through the trees at every turn. Was just lovely.

Hello Leanne,

What a lovely review to read, thank you. We really appreciate the time taken by our visitors to review their day out to the Palace and I am pleased you were blown away by what you discovered here!

The gardens change every season and look particularly stunning June - September when the roses are in full bloom and borders are full of colour, perfectly framing the neighbouring cathedral in the background.

Really pleased to hear our staff team helped you in the shop too. You must come back for a coffee soon - we serve some of the best coffee in Wells!

“Good Visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2014

Me and fiance had a good visit to the 'palace'. The size was unfortunately underwhelming though. The best part of it was the guides that they gave you. It had audio and video!

Hello,

Thank you for your review. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the Video Guides as you walked around.

Hope you can visit again one day, we're about to open a major exhibition called 'Created in Somerset' and have a rolling programme of exhibitions and events that make great use of the palace building and bring it to life.

“Excellent and interesting”

We were lucky to be there a the time to take part in an escorted visit which made the tour more interesting. The history of the palace is overwhelming and without the escort we would have missed most of the interesting details
