Owner description: Home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years this stunning medieval palace is open for all to enjoy. Surrounded by a breathtaking moat with resident Mute swans, you can cross the Drawbridge to experience a true hidden gem in the heart of the City of Wells. The Palace sits within 14 acres of RHS partner gardens, including the beautiful well pools from which the city takes its name. In the Arboretum is the newly developed "Dragon's Lair" children's playground to tire out little legs. There are daily Guided Tours, a Cafe serving delicious lunches, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Dogs are welcome on leads.

This is a beautiful place to meander round and lose yourself in - the garden is lovely with plenty to see from sculptures to flowers and trees with the beautiful water running through it, a little waterfall, a bridge and the wells. The palace itself is also worth a look and all feels very tranquil and peaceful - highly recommended. Good wheelchair access too in grounds and a lift in the palace (electric wheelchair).

Staff very helpful, gardens a joy! Take your lunch on a sunny day and have picnic in the grounds. Lots of events at different times of the year so look out for a programme. Lovely to see some contemporary art in the gardens

After viewing the Cathedral, this is a must see place, and it is right next door.
The grounds are stunning, with walks around that will enthrall everyone. Picnic areas are within the grounds, so you can rush around or better still, stroll around and take it all in. This is pure history. Now have your picnic.
Outside you can view the moat and hopefully some wildlife.
I have been many times and love it as much now as was my first visit many years ago.

We visited Wells for the afternoon and came across The Bishop's Palace and Gardens unexpectedly. It's absolutely beautiful! The staff are all very welcoming and friendly and we ended up paying to walk around the full Palace and gardens which were all beautiful. It is smaller than you'd expect from the map, but having done a lot of walking already, this was a relief for us!
Very relaxing, lovely atmosphere.

After visiting the Cathedral which is quite grand, we wandered over to the Palace. Fabulous gardens, walkable rampart, moat and access to two floors of the old abbey which was fully furnished. Definitely worth the visit.
