“Great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 November 2013

We stayed at the Swan hotel to celebrate an anniversary and were not disappointed. On arrival the staff were very helpful and pleasant. Our room was great, all we would expect. The location of the hotel is perfect for exploring Wells, you really are in the centre. We dined in the restaurant and it is fair to say that the meal exceeded our expectations, it really was very good and not over priced. The only minor niggle is getting in and out of the car park, you need to know where the extremities of your vehicle are!!

Our third visit to this hotel. This time we booked 2 superior rooms. These 2 rooms were quite different from each other, one had been upgraded with a small sitting room but a poor view (48), the second was, in our opinion, a standard room with tired furniture, not yet re-vamped (41) but with a superior view! looking out over the cathedral green. Well you cannot have everything!! For those with money to burn book the cathedral suite with its large bathroom with a gold bath!
We ate in the hotel restaurant each night as this was included in our package. There was a daily variable menu. We graded the meals as disappointing partly because my wife was served with the wrong meal and when the meal she had ordered eventually arrived it was not as described in the menu.
The building is a fine old coaching inn of historic interest but be aware that there are many stairs and the place is certainly not disabled friendly. Car parking is at the rear of the hotel accessed by a very interesting short route! Best to leave the car parked up and enjoy the city on foot.
The staff were all very pleasant but next time we shall try another hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the cathedral from the bedroom then go for a room overlooking Sadler Street. B...

We were part of a large (40+) group who descended on Wells, and all stayed in The Swan. I have nothing but good to say about the staff or the hotel, from the moment of arrival, when we were met in the car park by the general manager wearing pink - the staff were fund-raising for a cancer charity. Our room was comfortable, the food was good, and the service was excellent and very professional. The only downside was lack of space in the car park, but I did say there were over 40 of us, so can't really complain!

Room Tip: One comment from one of the party - don't book a room facing the street, which is cobbled, and c...

A very pleasant stay: excellent restaurant, obviously an excellent chef. Location of hotel in town centre, close to all facilities, facing west front of cathedral across the green. A building of character, and decorated in accord with its style and history. Room was spacious, beds very comfortable. A slight downside was difficulty in opening windows, and obliged to sleep with them closed. Care needed in negotiating the old coach arches to reach car park.

We stayed here for 3 nights with our best friends and we both booked Superior rooms. I requested a room overlooking the Cathedral and we got the one in the title picture (Room 41). We were not disappointed; the room was well decorated and clean. The bathroom wasn't huge but it was certainly large enough for us. Our friends had a lovely room without the view (Room 48) but they had a small TV lounge and also a much larger bathroom! We got a good deal with evening meals included so ate in the restaurant each night and found the food and service excellent, even when a large party of 41 (who were all staying) arrived to dine at the same time. The staff were courteous and very helpful and we had fun with them on their cancer charity pink-day. We will have no hesitation in returning.

Room Tip: Rooms are sequentially being refurbished and decorated so it is worth asking for one that has been d...

We stayed here for two nights, as part of a family get together.
Initial impressions were not good, with a rather surly receptionist(not typical of the other receptionists in the hotel). There are no lifts, and no offer of assistance with our bags up two steep flights of stairs.
Our initial unfavourable impression was reinforced by the discovery of a dirty pair of knickers, presumably left by a previous guest, hanging in the bathroom! These were ultimately removed, without any real apology, with the offer of a free cup of coffee as compensation! We did find this fairly typical of the standard of housekeeping,as the room was very poorly tidied during our stay.We had paid for a superior room, facing the Cathedral, and the room itself was perfectly adequate. The bathroom was however cramped, with an inadequate shower.
We made the mistake of dining in the hotel restaurant on our first night. The food was poor, particularly at the price, with unprofessional,if enthusiastic, service.Breakfasts were however good.
All in all,definitely not recommended.

Stayed here over a mixed weather weekend, the staff were efficient and courteous and the bar and lounge areas looked very inviting and really nicely decorated and warm. We stayed in one of the mews houses and we were very pleasantly surprised, great for what we wanted, ample room, clean and well maintained & appointed. Centrally located overlooking Wells Cathedral, I would certainly recommend The Swan. We didn't stay in the hotel as I say but I can't imagine they can be that different to the standard of the mews. Will be visiting again.

PS, couldn't find them on here but the Liberty Cafe & Bar next to the hotel was excellent. Great Cream Teas, cakes and hot chocolate for the kids and super clean and great service at reasonable prices, a must try.
