Excellent breakfast, friendly staff. The 4 poster rooms are expensive for what you get. Market morning they set up early but we didn't have an issue with it. We expected a lot of noise the way the Manager warned us about it but we slept pretty much through it. Could do with some new pillows too, quite hard, although the bed was comfortable enough.

Thank you for your review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and you found the breakfast excellent and staff friendly. We are sorry to hear you found the four poster rooms expensive; our accommodation is competitively priced for Wells city centre. Your comment concerning the pillow duly noted, thank you.

We were looking for somewhere different for lunch, and stumbled across Antons Bistro in the Crown at Wells. What a treat this turned out to be.£10 for 2 courses plus extra £3 if you want a dessert as well.I started with Potted old spot pork apple ad cider chutney with granary toast.and my husband had the blue cheese and spinach souflee with a dressed walnut salad, both delicious.Mains consisted of pan fried cod and prawn lemon butter jus new pots and green bean sand calves liver and crispy bacon served on a bed of mash with curly kale and a shallot gravy. Both dishes were beautifully cooked and very tasty. There were 4 choices of desserts 1 of which was cheese biscuits and celery with a pear chutney. This was enough to share. When you are seated at the table the waitress puts a nicely chilled bottle of water on the table ,this is complimentary, but we only found that out when we paid the bill. The special £10 menu changes daily so you can always ring them on the day,to find out that particular days delights. We were impressed with the food and have been back since. The food was as good that time too.I would recommend this eatery if you want a leisurly well priced lunch.Enjoy

The stay was very pleasant as the location is fantastic. The hotel itself is OK but really could do with a bit of a spruce up. The room was clean and the chambermaid service impeccable to say the least. The food in the restaurant was excellent as were the breakfasts. Shame they were fully booked on the second night. The staff seemed to be a mixture of good and bad, a bit like the hotel really. Pretty good value for money but nothing exceptional. Obviously the location demands a premium. Don't bring a big car as the parking is cramped and on a first come basis

Thank you for your review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and found the food to be excellent, so much so, we were fully booked on one of the nights you were here.
We must point out we are an inn, not an hotel, and market ourselves accordingly. Sorry you found The Crown " a bit tired". We are on a continual refurbishment process - a building of this age and character needs constant maintenance - and we don't profess anything other than in-keeping with the age and amazing character of this 15th century building.
We do not charge a premium for our unique location, far from it, we are very competively priced; please do check other accommodation providers in the area.
DO bring a car. Parking is on a first come, first served basis, but we always manage to accommodate our guests' vehicles, even if it means a bit of a shuffle 'round now and then.

Stayed here two nights and would come back. Great location right in the heart of this lovely little city, even has private parking for residents! We ate in Anton's Bistrot both nights - having had such a great meal the first night and finding nothing else that really appealed nearby we went back there for the second night.
This hotel is gorgeous, full of character and we were made very welcome.

Room Tip: Apparently if you stay the night before market days (wed and sat I think) there can be noise early in the morning from stall holders setting up. But I can't confirm because we didn't stay those nights.

This place has history written through it and I love it. I have stayed here many times. Creaky floor boards, uneven floors, the lot. So much better than those sterile chains. The customer care is very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent both at breakfast and in the Restaurant (also in the bar) and the beer superb. Of course Hot Fuzz was also filmed here but I was here before then and since; it has not changed the place at all. Wells is on your doorstep; including the Very early starting market which can clatter a bit one morning a week. Pubs etc galore, within a few feet (if you can be bothered to move from the place once you have landed)
