We stayed only one night and ate in the restaurant having been joined by others for the meal. The front bedrooms 3 &7 facing the cathedral were newly decorated and with an outstanding view ,all the facilities were very good.

I stayed for one night in March, having arrived on spec. My poor rating for value for money is based on the usual price for the room I had. I had it for a reduced amount, which was fine, but would not have paid the full amount. The lady on reception was very helpful. The single room was pleasant, at the top of the old building up an interesting flight of stairs, with a view over the cathedral and green, which was a delight. The ensuite was large and good. An interesting point was that if you didn't pull the blind down at the large ensuite window you could sit on the loo or have a shower and look out at the cathedral at the same time! However, the worry that people might be looking back prevented me from braving it! For breakfast you had to go across the road to the sister hotel, which was fine. I did find it surprising that as far as cereal went there was only a choice of two types, but the rest of the choice was good and the lady serving breakfast was wonderful! There is no parking but I managed to get a free space beside the cathedral green overnight, and was able to stay there until 11 the next morning. I believe parking can be arranged with the sister hotel. The location was ideal. I dined at their Italian restaurant in the evening.

Stayed for 2 nights and ate in restaurant on both nights which was excellent. No parking onsite but was able to park at "sister" hotel across the road where we also had breakfast. Roaring log fire at breakfast was most appreciated!

DON’T BOTHER….. Read the small print on their website. No Parking Nearby, and if you are lucky enough to find a parking bay, you can only stay for 2 hours during the day or you get clamped. And we had to go across the road for breakfast!! I think 2 Stars is a bit generous.

do not stay here if you

1. have a car and want helpful easy clear directions to a car park.

2. the smell of tamato, onion and Garlic Ragu makes you feel ill after 24 hours+.

stayed here had a car the reception was not overly versed on where you should park for the best.

the bathroom in our room stank of fermenting italian sauces from down stairs, i assume as the kitchen was directly below? but after the second day this started to actualy make us feel sick!!!!!!!!

your breakfast is over the road and if you order a paper DO NOT WAIT IN BED TO READ IT. you have to get up and go over to the sister hotel to retrive it!!!!!!!!!!!!

the oitalian restaurant however downstairs was realy good, but after eating there on the first night then having to smell the food for 2 days it knocked you sick really i am affraid.

1. Strategically placed cushions covered up dirt stains on the bedding
2. Bedding was very old and uncomfortable.
3. Had to wait all day for a bulb to be put in the main light in our room.
4. Why do you have to go to another hotel for breakfast (which was booked and paid for) when there is a restaurant downstairs??
5. The breakfast was cold, had run out of most things and sausage tasted funny!
6. Room was stuffy and windows could not be opened properly. One fell down and bruised my hand!!!
7. En suite bathroom was from the 1960's- very dated.
8. Provided with a kettle, but where are you meant to plug it in???
9. Very overpriced!! Staff not particularly helpful.
10. Nice view if the Cathedral though.

I booked this hotel at short notice and got a relatively cheap deal. However, although the hotel boasts a good location, overlooking the cathedral, we had a very small room at the front of the hotel. It was on the main road, so terribly noisy, it was also ridiculously hot in the room even though the heating was not on. We couldn't open the window as the noise from the road was too much with the market setting up very early. The plumbing in the hotel was also excessively noisy, and you could hear whenever anyone flushed the toilet, or took a shower!.

I also did not like the decor in the room, it was terribly dated, and could have done with better lighting and decoration. The renovation from a very grand building was not very sympathetically done, with dingy corridors being squeezed into what clearly used to be a grand room.

The only good thing about the hotel was a comfy bed (although I couldn't get any sleep because of the noise and heat) and the breakfast was very good. Other than that it was pretty terrible.
