“a little piece of paradise”
Reviewed 11 November 2009

We have stayed in several places near Wells and Bath, this beats them all. Although it is described as "B and B" it is much more than that. Set in wonderful spacious grounds (you can go for a walk in the grounds, and there is a swimming pool - not open when we visited). The house is a wonderful old mansion, incredibly well looked after, full of beautiful furniture and very sympathetically decorated. The host, Holly can not do enough for you - if you want to experience something a bit like staying with gentry in a country house, this comes close. A cosy room with an "honesy bar" is a great place to relax and read the papers, the rooms are a good size, and the breakfast and the breakfast room a really fabulous experience, we will go again, and sorry we have taken a little while to write this - definitely go, you will not regret it.,

We stayed at Beryl for one night on our way to S Ives and we can highly recommend it. A fantastic house full of character; a warm welcome and such a warm welcome from the owner on the night we arrived. A really homely atmosphere; a perfect location just minutes from Wells. Other ther guests had clearly visited a number of times before and you can see why. Our bedroom overlloked the back of the hotel with views of Wells Cathedral and it was beautifully furnished.

If you want the perfect, relaxing hotel away from it all, it does not come any better than this.

We will definitely be coming back for more than one night next time.

We stayed here for one night whilst visiting Wells. We had one of the rooms on the top floor but it was comfortable and had a lovely view down into Wells. Rooms were very clean and in keeping with the beautiful house. Breakfast was well presented and arranged in a way that you mixed with the other guests. Food choice was extensive from kippers through to a traditional full english with added option to go continental with ham and cheese.

One place we shall visit if we are in this area again.

We stayed here for two nights whilst visiting Wells for a wedding, and could easily have stayed for a week. The high-ceilinged rooms are comfortable, airy and in keeping with the beautiful house. The staff were very helpful and Holly the owner was very attentive. The honesty bar and beautiful Drawing Room were nice touches ( and very welcome after a long drive down!). Breakfast was wonderful with a full range of food available from kippers and porrige through to a traditional full english with the option of a continental buffet. The pool was open ( but we didn't try it!)

We would definitly stay here again.

We stayed at Beryl for the Bank Holiday weekend and I can highly recommend it. A fantastic house full of character; a warm welcome and and excellent staff, all in a really homely atmosphere; a perfect location just minutes from Wells and 20 minutes from Cheddar Gorge; amongst other guests who had clearly visited a number of times before and you can see why.

As well as the beautiful town, there are excellent restaurants right on your doorstep.

If you want the perfect, relaxing weekend away from it all, it does not come any better than this.

I booked Beryl based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. I don't normally do B&Bs but this seemed a bit special and larger than most . If you follow the instructions given by the owners of Beryl itself you will get there eventually. You suddenly come across a large metal sign saying Beryl and from there on you enter a lovely experience. The drive is long and winding and there is plenty of car parking. The house itself is delightful and the welcome equally so. We went for a moderately priced room at £85 a night and it was in the attic, adequately sized and with nice touches. If we returned I would probably pay a little more for a larger room. I was on business so conscious of cost! The room had a well sized bed and was attractively decorated. The shower room was fine with a range of shower gels and large towels with the Beryl insignia plus a great shower.
There were nice touches like quality teabags, fresh milk in the fridge in the kitchen on the same floor, a facility to wash and tumble dry clothes and a feeling of total trust.
The honesty bar is great. A well stocked fridge which you help yourself to and then simply write down what you had. A full bottle of wine was only £12, a small bottle was £3 so all very fairly priced with good quality wine glasses. The bar room had a large television and if you take your drink through to the sitting room it is lovely with beautiful views over the garden and a door that opens onto the lawns so in the summer it is blissful.
Breakfast was absolutely excellent. There is a mix of tables seating from 2 to 8 people. A little quiet music would help the atmosphere but the quality of the food was, without doubt, first class
There was a range of cereal, yoghurt and fruit including lovely strawberries in May! There were also meats and cheeses. The full English cooked breakfast was outstanding and freshly prepared for you with the most charming service you could wish for.
£85 for one of the lower priced rooms in a B&B is not cheap but the overall package was first class such that we wouldn't hesitate in returning.
All in all, a very good experience in a lovely house with charming hosts and all within walking distance of Wells, a stunning city the size of a town and only a short drive from Stourhead which is a must see.
Beryl is well worth 5 stars as it offers an experience at the top of its range and didn't feel like the B&B I was expecting.. Not a luxury hotel but a charming country house with people who want to share its pleasures with you. Well worth considering if you are heading to this area!

Beryl was stunning from beginning to end. The warm welcome from the absolutely gorgeous, nothing too much trouble hostess,as she took us to our room stayed with us until we left. This really is like sharing someone's beautiful and much loved family home on a rather grand scale. The building is beautiful, with elegant yet comfortable furniture and furnishings, all asking to be sat upon and used, a place from which to observe the abundant family photos , antiques and amazing views accross the garden to Wells Cathedral in the distance. The library is laid out with a fire, comfy leather chairs, TV,stereo,cd's, and an honesty bar with a fridge, freshly cut lemon and every imaginable drink option - we spent an hour in there soaking up the atmosphere before leaving to sample the delights of an evening in Wells. The rooms are fabulous, the photos make them look rather blowsy and dated, but this is the real thing, not a Laura Ashley confection of frills and bows -they are spacious, immaculately clean, very comfortable, lovely fluffy towels, top quality linen, and good substantial showers. The breakfast is the best we have ever had in a hotel, the cutlery is silver, the preserves delicous and the service perfect. Our only regret was that we had only booked one night, which was not enough to truly indulge the great country house atmosphere - next time we shall stay longer and explore the beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside.
